What we are doing in Kensington

Hello there everyone,
As you heard from Henry last week we will be incorporating more visuals into our classes from now on so please take a look at the photos and blurbs included in the materials. Another change we will be making is to the first part of the class, the small talk section.

We see each other about once a week and sometimes nothing much has changed from the previous week, so from now if you have nothing much to say about what is happening in your life right now, why don’t you prepare a photo to talk about with your partner.

There are no particular subjects for the photos, it can be something you ate/ cooked recently, a place you have been to in the past, a family member or friend, a picture of your home/ car, whatever you like. This is a good chance for you to have a think about what you’ll be saying in the small talk section of the class and not just the vocabulary we ask you to pre-study.

I look forward to seeing your pictures in class!

みなさんこんにちは

ヘンリー講師が先週紹介した通り、今後のレッスンではもっと画像を使用して行きます。ぜひオンライン教材の中の写真などをチェックしてみてください。

他にも新しい取組みとして、これからはレッスンの最初にスモールトークの時間を設けて行くことになりました。
でも、私たちは大体1週間に一度お会いするので、特に変わったこともなくいつも通り…な時もありますよね、今後はそんな時、あなたが準備しておいた写真について、パートナーに話してみてください。

写真については、特に決まったテーマはありません。あなたが最近食べたり料理したもの、過去に訪れた場所、家族や友人のこと、家や車のことなど、何でもいいのです。
スモールトークの時間に何を話そうかと考える時は、好きな写真の英語描写を学ぶ良い機会です。ボキャブラリー以外の予習としてぜひやってみてください。

レッスンの中で、みなさんの写真を見れることを楽しみにしています！

普段よく使う2つのシンプルな単語・表現を、ビジネス英語向きの単語・表現に置き換えてみましょう。

give の代わりに、provide または offer に置き換えてみる。

Use it or lose it

Greetings everyone, hope you’ve had time to just take it easy this weekend or went somewhere taking advantage of the Japan government’s “Go to” travel.

In our study advice blog today is
Application or use

Find a way to use or apply what you learn in the lessons and the Kensington Eikaiwa study material.
For example, if you’re lucky to work, go out, exercise at a gym etc that has foreigners, don’t hesitate to try out a small talk expression if you have a chance to.
The more you use the language learned, the better communicator you become.
Remember “Use it or lose it.”

Hello there, are you having an eventful weekend?
Well, I’m having a quiet one with lots of coffee.

Speaking of coffee, do you know the largest coffee exporter in Africa? Ethiopia? Kenya? Côte d’ivoire? No, none of those. It’s Uganda.

There are two many varieties of coffee, Arabica and Robusta. Uganda produces mainly the robusta variety. Robusta coffee is used in instant coffee, espresso and most of the canned coffee sold in the vending machines.
Although Uganda is one of top African coffee producing countries, most Ugandans prefer tea to coffee. In fact, less than 10% of the coffee produced in Uganda is drunk/consumed locally.

私は沢山のコーヒーと共に、静かに過ごしています。

コーヒーについて。
アフリカでもっともコーヒーを輸出しているのはどこかご存知ですか？エチオピア？ケニア？コートジボアール？いえいえ、それらの国はありません。
アフリカでもっともコーヒーを輸出している国、それは「ウガンダ」です。

コーヒーにはアラビアカとロブスタという2つの有名な品種があり、ウガンダでは主にロブスタ種を生産しています。ロブスタ種はインスタントコーヒーやエスプレッソ、それに自動販売機で売られている多くの缶コーヒーでも使われています。
ウガンダはアフリカでもっともコーヒーを生産している国ですが、実は多くのウガンダ人はコーヒーよりも紅茶が好きなんです。実際にウガンダ国内でローカル向けに作られるコーヒーは紅茶よりも10%も少ないのです。

Hi there, TGIF! (Thank God It’s Friday!)
Any plans for the weekend? Are you planning to get out of town and enjoy the great outdoors somewhere?

In our everyday English blog we’re going to look at two expressions

as big as all outdoors

This phrase means very large.
A: Have you seen the CEO’s new yacht?
B: No, I haven’t. What is it like?
A: It’s as big as all outdoors!

get away from it all

It means to go to a different place usually far away from your workplace, city or stressful environment.
We love living in the city but sometimes we need to get away from it all and go to the mountains and enjoy the great outdoors.
My idea of getting away from it all is going fishing with my son on the Hudson river.

My idea of getting away from it all is going fishing with my son on the Hudson river.

Hello everyone, how’s it going?

“The Great Outdoors” is our topic this week!
Do you enjoy spending some time in the great outdoors? I certainly do.
In this lesson, we talk about outdoor activities and places where we can do those activities for example go rafting or kayaking on the river/go fishing at the lake…
We’ll also learn names of places of natural beauty e.g. waterfalls, volcanic mountains, valleys and others and tell our classmates or teachers about the most fascinating/beautiful/breathtaking places we’ve been to.
(Share stories about our outdoor experiences)
And what next…What outdoor activities would we like to try or places of natural beauty we’d love to visit in the future.

Hello there, How’s everything going?
It has gotten a little chilly lately, especially at night and in the morning.
I hope you’re all keeping healthy physically, emotionally and mentally.
Speaking of health, the Kensington Eikaiwa management, teachers and supporting staff thank all of you our students for co-operating to keep our classrooms safe by social distancing, wearing facial covering, sanitizing your hand and or taking online classes.

At Kensington Eikaiwa we’re making constant effort to help you, our dear students improve your English language communication skills and achieve your study objectives. One of the new things you’re going to notice soon in our lessons, is more use of visuals/photos to make our lessons more interesting and engaging. We’d like you to be able to comment on the photos, ask and answer questions about them. Of course you can share and talk about your own photos.
