Greetings everyone, the last petal of the cherry blossoms has already fallen. Soft green shoots are all we see, covering the cherry trees around us. How’s  your spring going? 

Mine’s going well so far.  Here are some more pointers on the TOEIC speaking test. As I said in the last blog, Qns 8-10 you answer questions using information provided. And for Qn 10 particularly, you’re going to listen to a problem and offer a solution or a way to deal with the problem. Your  answer should show to the examiners that you clearly understand  the problem and offer a practical solution. (For example, imagine a situation where you’re a customer service staff helping a customer with a problem)  

Qn 11 Express an opinion (More in the next blog)

桜の最後の花びらは落ち、桜の木にはやわらかな緑の芽が見られるようになりました。
今年の春はいかがお過ごしですか？私は今のところ順調です。

今日はTOEIC Speaking Testに関するアドバイスをご紹介します。
前回のブログで述べたように、問題8〜10は、提供された情報を使って質問に回答していきます。
特に問題10の場合は、問題の解決策または対処方法を提供します。
問題を明確に理解し、実用的な解決策を提供していることを試験官に示す必要があります。 (たとえば、カスタマーサービススタッフとして顧客対応をしている状況を想像するといいでしょう。)

問題11はExpress an opinion(意見を述べる問題)です。
またブログで詳しくご説明します。

Warm greetings everyone, it’s a week or more into April. Has April brought any changes in your life? Here are some more pointers about the TOEIC speaking test Questions 5-7 (Responding to questions) You’ll be asked questions on a range of subjects; TV, movies, shopping etc. Please answer in complete natural sentences, stick to the topic and avoid socially offensive responses. You’ll get more points for complete, relevant and socially acceptable answers (of course plus correct grammar, vocabulary, cohesion (結束), pronunciation…) 

What do you use social media for?

I use it for many things, for example……   

Qns 8-10 Respond to questions using information provided (As in qns 5-7, complete,relevant, socially acceptable answers…)

今日はTOEIC Speaking Test の、問題5〜7 (応答問題）に関するヒントをご紹介します。

この応答問題では、テレビ、映画、ショッピングなど、さまざまなテーマについて質問されます。
自然な言葉で答え、テーマの内容から逸れないようにし、社会的に攻撃的な回答は避けましょう。
完全で、関連性があり、社会的に受け入れられる答え（もちろん、正しい文法、語彙、一貫性、発音も）で回答できれば、より多くの得点を獲得できるでしょう。

What do you use social media for?
(ソーシャルメディアを何に使いますか？)

I use it for many things, for example……
(私はそれを多くのことに使います、例えば …)

問題8〜10は提示された情報に基づく応答問題です。
さきほどの問題5〜7のように、完全で、関連性があり、社会的に受け入れられる回答が必要です。

Warm greeting everyone, it feels like spring is in the air and we’ll be saying sayonara to Old Man Winter soon. Here are some more pointers on the TOEIC speaking test: As I mentioned in the earlier blog, there are 11 questions in the speaking section Qns 1-2 You’ll read a text aloud. You’ll be evaluated on1. Pronunciation 2. Intonation 3. Stress. Please practice those three things.
Qn 3 Describe a picture. Describe what you see in the picture making sure not to imagine something that’s not in the picture. Evaluation points: as qn 1-2 above, plus grammar,vocabulary and cohesion.

今日はTOEIC Speaking Testに関するアドバイスをご紹介します。
以前のブログでも少し触れましたが、このスピーキングテストには１１の問題数があります。
そのうちの１から４の問題についてご紹介します。

問題１-２：音読問題
短い英文を音読します。
評価基準は、「発音」「イントネーション」「アクセント」です。
これら３つに注意して練習するようにしましょう。

問題３-４：写真描写問題
写真をみて内容を説明します。
写真に写っていないものを想像するのではなく、写真に写っているものを説明してください。
問題１-２の評価基準に加えて、「文法」「語彙」「一貫性」が評価されます。

【英検】面接で使える！回答のシンプルなテンプレート

Let’s talk testing strategies for Eiken.

Eiken is not actually all that great of a test for testing your natural English – but it’s useful for memorization purposes, remembering vocabulary and also being able to describe pictures in detail. This doesn’t apply to Eiken 1 however – Eiken 1 is very advanced and nearing academic levels of fluency.

For levels below 1 though, I suggest when being asked questions in the interview test to follow a structure in your answering that is easy to remember, for example:

“Do you think watching TV is good for you?”

You can answer this with a short answer, but you want an answer that gives one or two reasons. A good “template” answer you can use for other questions is:

“No, I don’t, because <insert reason 1>, and I think <insert reason 2>.”

That’s a very basic template, but an excellent answer would look like:

“No, I don’t, because it’s quite a waste of time, and I think there are much better things to do than watching TV, like playing sports.”

There are two reasons in there, adverbs are used, adjectives, and comparisons. That’s an ideal answer. Practice that kind of template, and you’ll get through Eiken interviews fine.

今日は英検対策について話しましょう。

英検は、普段の自然な英会話をテストするためのものとしてはそれほど優れているわけではありませんが、英単語を覚えたり、写真を詳細に説明できるようになるのには役立ちます。
英検１級はさらに高度で、アカデミックレベルの流暢さに近いものが求められます。

１級より下の級であれば、面接で回答する時は覚えやすい構造を使うことをおすすめします。
たとえば次のようなものです。

質問：Do you think watching TV is good for you?
(テレビを見るのはあなたにとって良いことだと思いますか？)

短い文で回答することもできますが、一つまたは二つの理由をつけた方が良いです。
回答に使えるテンプレートは次のとおりです。

No, I don’t, because <理由１を言う>, and I think <理由２を言う>.
(いいえ、私は思いません。なぜなら<理由1>、そして<理由2>だと思います。)

このテンプレートはとても基本的なものですが、これを使って次のように優れた回答をすることができます。

No, I don’t, because it’s quite a waste of time, and I think there are much better things to do than watching TV, like playing sports.
(いいえ、私は思いません。それはかなりの時間の無駄です。スポーツをするなど、テレビを見るよりもはるかに良いことがあると思います。)

回答の中には二つの理由が入っていて、副詞も使われ、形容詞と比較級も入っています。
これは理想的な回答です。
このようなテンプレートを練習すれば、英検の面接をうまくやり遂げることができるでしょう。

Warm greetings everyone and I hope you’re keeping warm and healthy in the chilly February weather. Here are some more pointers on the TOEIC speaking test: 1. Background noise Most likely there will be background noise from other test takers, so don’t be distracted, focus on your speaking. 2. Use correct grammar and avoid slang. The goal here is your answer to be clearly understood by the examiner who’ll listen to the recording. 3. Speaking tone: Try not to sound like a robot. Vary your tone naturally just like when you’re speaking to a real person in front of you.

ここでの目標は、録音を聞く採点者が明確に理解できるように話すことです。

3.話し方
ロボットのように聞こえないようにしてください。
目の前の人と話しているように、自然に口調を変えながら話しましょう。

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Come prepared to talk a lot about what you did past week

Hey everyone,

This is especially for the lower level students, Level 1s or lower level 2s. For you guys it’s always a good idea to spend some time thinking about what you did last week and trying to expand as much as possible. Many of our students now do that and it’s excellent practice.

Remember that what you did last week doesn’t need to be anything special, it can be a meal you made, a book you read, a TV program you watched etc. Talk as much as you can is always a great idea in our classes.

Tim’s best and worst movies of the year

Hey everyone,

I’m planning to make a longer post about my best experiences of the year together with photos and post it on the Windsor Eikaiwa blog later on (if I have time) but for now this is a shorter version about my best (and worst) movies.

I haven’t watched so many dramas this year, but I’ve watched quite a few films I think, the best of which is probably “Once upon a time in Hollywood” or “Blackkklansman”. They were both incredibly entertaining and I can’t believe how cool Brad Pitt still is at over 50.

The worst film I’ve watched this year is maybe “Tenet”. It’s kind of unfair to say that cause I actually didn’t see much of it, I got really tired and turned it off after about 10 or 15 minutes. I didn’t understand a thing during that time though, so I decided to give up. It’s a shame cause I usually love Christopher Nolan’s movies. His movies are always cerebral and require attention from the viewer but I think maybe he went a little bit too far with Tenet.

皆さんこんにちは。

後ほど時間があれば、今年の最高の経験についての写真付きの長いブログを、ウインザー英会話ブログにアップしようかと計画中ですが、今日のところは、私のベスト＆ワーストの映画について短いバージョンでご紹介します。

今年はそう多くのドラマは観ませんでしたが、映画はかなり観たと思います。
最も良かったのは、「Once upon a time in Hollywood」か「Blackkklansman」だと思います。これらは両方、とてもエンターテイメント性にあふれていて、ブラッドピットはもう50歳を超えてるのにとてもクールでした。

今年観た中で最も良くなかったのは、「Tenet」だと思います。この評価はある意味フェアではないかもしれません。なぜなら、私は実際にはあまり良く観ていないからです。私はとても疲れてしまって、10分か15分でスイッチをオフにしました。この数分間、私はまったく意味がわからなかったので、観るのを止めてしまったのです。私は通常、クリストファー・ノーランの映画が好きなので、残念でした。彼の映画はいつも、視聴者にとって知的で注意力が必要です。しかし「Tenet」に関してはそうでもなかった様に思います。
