Talk about my country
English history is long and multicultural.

Around 600 years ago, some big tribes migrated to my home country of England from mainland Europe. The language that they spoke was the beginning of the English language that you are learning today.
One of the biggest tribes was called the Angles.
The word ‘England’ originally meant ‘land of the Angles’, and ‘English’ meant ‘related to the Angles’.
Back then, ‘English’ was probably a word people used when describing that tribe, instead of language.
That’s the beginning of the origin story of ‘English’.
Isn’t it interesting how language changes over time?

600年ほど前、いくつかの大きな部族が、ヨーロッパの本土から私の母国であるイギリスへ移住してきました。彼らが話していた言語が、みなさんが現在学習されている「英語」の始まりです。最も大きかった部族の一つはアングル族と呼ばれました。 ‘England’＝「イギリス」という言葉はもともと‘land of the Angles’ =「アングル族の土地」という意味で、‘English’は「アングル族に関係のある」という意味だったのです。その当時、多分‘English’は言語（英語）という意味ではなく、人々がその部族（アングル族）について言い表す時に用いた言葉だったのでしょう。これが‘English’の語源のはじまりのお話です。時間を経ると、言語がこんな風に変化するなんて、おもしろいですよね？

Those were the days / The good old days

Do you ever find yourself looking back at a time in the past with fond memories, wishing you were there instead of here? Well, I have two idioms you can use to sum all that up:

‘I remember playing football in the park, those were the days’
– We remember that great time of playing football and we kind of wish that we could do it again in the same way-

‘Do you remember the good old days when Freddos cost 10p’
– ‘Freddos’ is a small chocolate bar in the U.K which is fated to cause controversy whenever its price is inevitably increased. –

Whenever it does increase in price some people will reminisce on a simpler time when things weren’t so expensive.

Those were the days / The good old days

みなさんは、甘い思い出のつまった過去を振り返って、ここではなく「そこ」にいれたら、、なんて考えることはありませんか？そこで、それを全部まとめるのに使える２つの慣用句をご紹介します。

「公園でサッカーをしていたのを思い出すな、（ those were the days＝）それがあの頃だったんだ」
ーサッカーをしていた素晴らしい時を思い出し、また同じ様にそれができたら良いのに、と思っていることを表す文ー

「Freddosが10ペンスだった、あの古き良き日々（the good old days)を覚えているかい？」ーFreddosは、イギリスで売っている小さなチョコレートバーですが、その値段が仕方なく上げられると、必ず論争が起こるのです。人によっては、その価格が上がる度に、もっとシンプルで、物がそんなに高くなかった時代のことを思い出すでしょう。

この慣用句を楽しく使っていただければと思います。

How language shapes the way we think

Hello everyone,

For today I’d like to share an interesting talk on TED about language and how it shapes how we think. Do you guys think differently in English and in Japanese? I think I do, I’m much less direct in Japanese I think using そうですね as a way to politely disagree with someone but I’m less likely to do the same when speaking English. I’d probably be more direct (but still polite!)

今日は、言語がどのように私たちの思考方法を形作るのかについてTEDからの興味深い話しをお伝えしますね。
みなさんは英語の時と日本語の時とで異なる考え方をしますか。自分はそうだなと思います。日本語のときはかなり直接的ではなくなり、誰かの意見に反対する際に「そうですね」という言葉を失礼にならないように使っていますが、英語で話しているときは、同じようなリアクションをすることはあまりないと思います。おそらくもっと直接的だと思います（といっても、礼儀は忘れませんが！）。

How to use almost in English

Hello everyone,

Almost is a word that almost all my students use wrongly. My students basically think that almost means ほとんど and while that is true, it leads to mistakes as the use of ほとんど in Japanese and “Almost” in English is slightly different.

For example in Japanese the following sentence is ok
ほとんどの日本人はご飯を食べます。
But in English
“Almost Japanese people eat rice.” is not a correct sentence.

I think a better way to think of “almost” in Japanese is もう少しで or (実は違うが)…に近い.
So you have sentences such as

It’s almost three o’clock. ← It’s not 3 o’clock yet but it’s very close to 3, maybe 2:57 or something.
My glass is almost empty. ← My glass is not 100% empty yet, but it’s very close to being empty soon.
Almost all Japanese people eat rice. ← Not all Japanese people eat rice but it’s very close to all, for example 99% or something.
I almost drowned when I was a young boy. ← I had a very scary experience and I was very nearly dead, but I survived now and I can talk about it.

日本人の間違えやすい英語： “almost” を正しく使うコツ

皆さんこんにちは

“almost”という言葉は、大部分の生徒さんが間違って使ってしまいます。基本的に生徒さんたちは “almost”＝「ほとんど」だと考えてしまいます。それは正しくはあるのですが、日本語の「ほとんど」と英語の “almost”の使い方がやや異なるため、間違いにつながってしまします。

例えば日本語では、次の言い方は正しいですよね。
【例】「ほとんどの日本人は米を食べます。」
しかし英語で
“Almost Japanese people eat rice.” と言うと誤りです。

日本語で “almost”を考えるときのコツは、「もう少しで」あるいは「 (実は違うが)…に近い」と置き換えてみることです。.
ですから、次の文のように考えてみましょう。

【例】「ほとんど（＝もう少しで）3時です。」←まだ3時ではないけれどとても近い。おそらく14:57くらい。
【例】「私のグラスはほとんど空（に近い）です。」←100％空ではないけれど、もう空に近づいている。
【例】「ほとんど全ての（＝100％に近い）日本人が米を食べます。」←全日本人が食べるわけではないけれど、それに近い、例えば99％など。
【例】「子どものころ、ほとんど溺れかけた（が実際に溺れたわけではない）」←非常に恐ろしい思いをして死にかけたが、実際には今も生きていてその話をしている。

日本人がよく間違える英語 (現在進行形）

Hello there everyone,

This is a common mistake that a lot of Japanese students make.

私の友達が今福岡に来ています。

My friend is coming to Fukuoka now. X

If you directly translate this in this way the meaning completely changes and it means that a friend of yours is on their way to the city right now. It’s better to say it this way in English.

My friend is in Fukuoka just now.
A friend of mine is visiting Fukuoka just now.

「～している」＝現在進行形？　いいえ、いつもそうとは限りません！　

みなさんこんにちは
これは、英語を勉強している日本人の皆さんがよくやる間違いです。

「私の友達が今福岡に来ています。」と言おうとして
“My friend is coming to Fukuoka now.” というのは X。

こんな風に直訳してしまうと意味がまったく変わってしまい、「友達が今ちょうどこの街に向かっているところです」という意味になります。英語では次のように言うほうがいいですね。

My friend is in Fukuoka just now.　「私の友達がちょうど今、福岡に（滞在して）います。」
A friend of mine is visiting Fukuoka just now. 「私の友達がちょうど今福岡を訪ねてきているところです。」
