Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons -Engage in some small talk

Hello there everyone, 

In Kensington we often practice making small talk in our lessons. It is an important part of day to day conversation and something we think you should learn to get to grips with because it is necessary for day to day living when overseas. The Japanese don’t do much in the way of small talk with strangers but it’s best to be prepared  because as you have probably noticed, people are pretty chatty overseas. ( It sometimes catches me off guard a bit too when I go home)

Since we have all put in so much effort and have practiced so much, why not make the effort to have a chat, in English of course, before the class with your classmates. I often come from my short break between lessons to find a class full of deathly silence and people staring intently at their phones. Of course I know that you are all excellent students and are preparing hard for the lesson but instead how about putting what you know into practice with the person sitting next to you or the teacher? You will find over time that it gets easier and easier, that means you are making progress, and it also helps you relax a bit before the class begins. 

I’m excited to hear you all chatting before class from here on in!

海外では日常生活に欠かせない「世間話」。あえて練習してみる。

みなさん、こんにちは。

ケンジントンでは、レッスンのなかで’small talk’ =「世間話、雑談」をする練習をします。日常的な会話において重要なものですし、海外では日常生活に欠かせないものなので、直面した時に備えておくべきものだと思うからです。（私も、母国に帰った時にはたまに油断していた！という時があります）

みなさんが、せっかくたくさん努力して、たくさん練習をしているのですから、レッスン前に、もちろん英語で、クラスメイトとおしゃべりしてみてはどうでしょうか？私は大抵レッスン間に短い休憩をとって戻るのですが、その際にクラスには死んだような沈黙が流れ、人々はひたすら電話を見つめている、という光景があります。もちろん、みなさんが全員すばらしい学習者で、レッスンの準備もしっかりとしてきてくださることを私は知っています。しかし、学んだことを、となりに座っている他の受講生や講師を相手に実践することはどうでしょう？時間が経つごとに、簡単に感じるようになると思います。それは、あなたが進歩しているということですし、レッスン前の緊張をほぐして、少しリラックスするためにも良いと思います。

今後、レッスン前にみなさんがおしゃべりしているのを聞けるのを楽しみにしています！

Talk about myself/my hometown/my country

Hello everyone,

Today I’ll introduce you to my hometown. I am from a very small town called Oban which is in the northwest of Scotland. It is a nice little town, if a little boring sometimes, the main industry is tourism so for a town of about 8000 people we have a lot of bars and restaurants, about 40, and countless hotels, bed and breakfasts, and youth hostels. In the summer when the tourist season really starts, the population of the town goes up to 25,000 and stays that way for most of the season. 

My hometown is popular because it is the easiest way to get to the Western Isles which are really popular with foreign and domestic travellers alike. 

Oban is famous for its whisky ( which I secretly don’t like), it has a high concentration of very intelligent handsome men,  and it also holds the Gaelic Mod from time to time. You may not know this but Scotland was not originally an English- speaking country. Though everyone speaks English now, we have our own language known as Gaelic and although the language is pretty much dying out in Scotland there are a few people who can speak it fluently and some words are still alive in the local dialect. The Mod is an annual competition of Gaelic song, literature, and arts. I think the northwest of Scotland is really one of the most beautiful places I’ve been to and is really worth a visit if you are looking for a relaxing holiday. There isn’t a lot to do there unless you like fishing or hillwalking but it is spectacularly beautiful and the people are friendly too! I recommend the summer though because my country is not known for its wonderful weather. As one of my Australian friends who lived there for a while commented  “Sunshine can only be found in the pub!”

みなさん、こんにちは。今日は私の故郷へご案内したいと思います。私はスコットランドの北西にある、オーバンというとても小さい町の出身です。素敵なこじんまりとした町で、ちょっと暇でつまらない時もありますが、主な産業は観光なので、8000人程の町にしては、バーとレストランがたくさん、40くらいはあります。あとは、数え切れないほどのホテルとB＆B、ユースホステルがあります。観光シーズンが本格的に始まる夏には、町の人口が25000人程まで増え、ほとんどの季節はそれを維持します。

私の地元が人気なのは、国内外からの旅行客などに大人気のウェスタンアイル（アウター・ヘブリィーズ）に一番近い町だからです。オーバンで有名なのは、ウィスキー（内緒ですが私は好きじゃないです）、ものすごくインテリでハンサムな男性の多さ、そして時々Gaelic Modの開催地になることです。

ご存じないかもしれませんが、スコットランドはもともと英語を母語とする国ではありませんでした。今は皆、英語を話しますがゲール語として知られている独自の言語があります。もう絶滅しかけていて、スコットランドでも流暢に話せるのは数名しかおらず、いくつかの言葉が方言として生き残っているくらいですが。MODとは毎年開かれるゲール語の歌、文学、芸術の大会です。

私が思うに、スコットランドの北西部は私が訪れた中でも最も美しい場所のうちの一つですし、リラックスできる休暇を求めているなら、訪れる価値のある場所です。あなたが釣りやハイキング好きでない限り、やることはそんなに多くあるわけではありませんが、とにかく壮大な美しさがあり、人々もフレンドリーです！おすすめは夏ですが。なぜなら私の国はそのすばらし～い気候で有名なわけではないからです。しばらくスコットランドに住んでいた、私の友人のオーストラリア人がこう言っていたくらいです「ここでは太陽光（眩しい光）は、酒場でしかみつけられないね！」

Everyday English – Dressed to kill!

Hi there everyone, 

This expression sounds a bit on the scary side I know but I can assure you it has nothing to do with cold-blooded murder! 

Dressing to kill means that you are dressed in a manner which is meant to create an impression on people. You may be decked out in your finest Armani suit or wearing a striking mini skirt and diamond encrusted heels, whatever it may be the purpose is to create an impression. 

Example
“Did you see Emma at the staff party last weekend? She looked amazing and was really dressed to kill!”

日常でつかえる英語表現 : “Dress to kill”=危険な英語表現！？いえいえ、実はこんな意味

みなさん、こんにちは。

この表現はどちらかというと怖く聞こえるのは確かですが、冷血な殺人とは無関係であることを保証します！

Dressing to kill ＝殺すための服装（をする）　とは、意図的に人々に印象づけをするための服装に身を包むことです。あなたが一番高価（上質）なアルマーニのスーツで着飾ったり、目立つミニスカートにダイヤモンドを散りばめたハイヒールを履いたり、その他どんな格好であっても、あなたを他の人たちの印象に残るようなものでれば、なんでもです。

例）「先週末のスタッフパーティーでエマを見た？すごく素敵だったし、キマッてたわね！」
