Keyword Focusing

For many of my beginner students, I always strongly recommend focusing on keywords in a sentence, not prepositions or the grammatical structure.

The reason why is because in any form of communication, the essential points are what matter, not the precision in communication. If I give you “Me”, “eat”, “food”, “Wednesday”, you now have enough information to know that I will eat food on Wednesday.

Why should you focus on this? Because it allows you to understand each other easier, and focus on the important parts of communication. Over time, you will naturally start to use smaller details like prepositions and precise grammar.

This is how I self-taught Japanese – keywords, key kanji, context, and then filling the rest in over time. Trust me!

英語が初心者の生徒さんに私が強くおすすめすることは、前置詞や文法構造ではなくキーワードに焦点をあてることです。

その理由は、どのような形のコミュニケーションであれ大事なことはコミュニケーションの正確さではなく、必要な事柄を述べることだからです。
私があなたに「私」「食べる」「食べ物」「水曜日」と伝えたら、あなたは私が水曜日に食べ物を食べることを知るのに十分な情報を持っています。

なぜキーワードに焦点をあてる必要があるか。
それはお互いを理解しやすくなりコミュニケーションの重要な部分に集中できるからです。
前置詞や正確な文法などの細かい部分は時間が経てば自然に使いはじます。

これが私の日本語の勉強方法です。
キーワード、主要な漢字、文脈、そして残りを時間をかけて埋めていきます。

Studying English in the pandemic

The pandemic has been terrible for so many things but one thing that we all should be doing is taking advantage of that extra time at home to learn ourselves now skills. I’ve met many students that started their studies during the pandemic or study even harder now that have less things to do. 

I mean, the pandemic has lasted for a good two years now but it’s not going to last forever, borders are soon going to open again, international travel will restart, foreign customers will once again come to your business, you’ll be able to go abroad to study English again soon so taking advantage of this time to improve one of your skills instead of binge watching Netflix sounds like a sensible allocation of time.

do some reading

Hi there, how’s your day going? The study and learning advice this week for me and anyone who’s not doing it regularly is let’s do some reading in English (Japanese for me). Try to make a habit of reading something whenever you can. It doesn’t have to be long. A few lines in a magazine or newspaper, an advertisement, a poster etc Don’t be afraid to browse English websites. And as you already know, it’s better to guess the meaning of new words through context.

できる限り何かを読む習慣をつけましょう。
長い文章を読む必要はありません。
雑誌や新聞、広告やポスターなどの数行で大丈夫です。
英語のウェブサイトを恐れずに見るのもいいでしょう。
そして、すでにご存知かもしれませんが、文脈から新しい単語の意味を推測するのはオススメです。

Think about after corona

Hello there everyone.

Actually I wrote about this pretty extensively on my Nishijn blog recently but I think it’s worth mentioning here too. It’s been an unusual couple of years and unfortunately for many people it has put a lot of their plans on hold and as a result has made some of us feel we don’t really need English right now. It is sad to see people losing their motivation to continue with their studies or meet potential new students who tell me they aren’t sure if it’s worthwhile at the moment.

I’d say that now is exactly the time to start studying English or studying more. For one thing, there isn’t much else going on right now as

social gatherings, travel, and studying abroad are all on hold for the time being and if you ask me now would be the perfect time to knuckle down and really focus on your studies so you can come out at the end of this better off. I know I’ve been using the time to improve my Japanese skills and work on getting my kids more and more involved in English reading and writing than before, my son is also going to be taking a couple of Eiken tests this year.

Now would be a good time to remember the reason why you started learning English and really working towards that because let’s face it, covid can’t last forever and even if it does business will have to go back to normal at some point and it’s better to be ready for that than to have wasted this time. It’s two years and counting, which is quite a bit of time in language learning. So my advice today isn’t really much about how to study and more about to think about what you want to achieve with your English and how best to do that. Learning English really has no down side to it, requires a fair bit of practice, and is also a perishable skill. So whatever your aim for learning English may be, whether you are one of our existing students or someone who is thinking of joining us, let’s do this! I’ll be here to help you in whatever way I can.

コロナ後について考える

みなさん、こんにちは。

じつは最近、西新校のブログでもコロナ後のことについてかなり広範囲に書いていますが、ここ赤坂本校のブログでも言及する価値があると思いますので書きたいと思います。

この数年間は普通の日常ではありませんでした。
残念ながら、多くの方が海外旅行などの計画を保留にせざるを得ない状態になり、その結果、英語の勉強を後回しにしようと思う方がいらっしゃいます。
英語学習を続けるモチベーションを失っていたり、いま英語を勉強することに価値があるかどうかわからないとケンジントン英会話への参加を迷っているとお聞きするのはとても悲しいことです。

ですが、いまこそ英語を勉強したり、もしくは、学習をさらにもっと前に進める時だと、私は思います。

一つ例をあげると、いまは、懇親会、旅行、留学などが当分の間保留になっているように、やらなくてはいけないことは前ほど多くはありません。
よりよい未来に向けて、学習に真剣にとりかかり、集中するのにとても最適な時期だと思います。
私は自分の日本語スキルを向上させるためにこの時間を使っていますし、私の子どもたちには、英語の読み書きに前よりも多く取り組めるように働きかけていて、息子は今年、英検を複数回受ける予定です。

いまこそ、英語に真剣に取り組んでいた理由や目標を思い出す良い機会です。
実際にコロナは永遠に続くことはできないでしょう。
たとえそれが続いたとしても、私たちはある時点で通常に戻らなければならず、この時期を無駄に過ごすよりは、目標のための準備ができている方が良いはずです。
コロナの時期はもう２年になりますが、この２年という長さは語学を学習するのに十分な時間です。
今日のブログのタイトルは「学習アドバイス」ですが、今日の私のアドバイスは英語学習の仕方についてではなく、「英語で何を達成したいのか、そしてどのように達成するのが最善かについて考えましょう」ということです。
英語を学ぶことにマイナス面はありませんが、かなりの練習が必要であり、衰えやすいスキルでもあります。
英語を学ぶ目的が何であれ、あなたがケンジントン英会話の生徒であろうとなかろうと、やってみましょう！
私はできる限りの方法であなたを助けるためにここにいます。

Writing structure lessons

Write, write often, and learn how to structure your writing in a way that is logical in English.

What do I mean? Well, for starters – when you learn to write well, you learn to structure language in your mind much clearer. Speaking it takes time because speaking is a different skill – you know the words, but fluently saying them is a muscular and sound movement. You’ll know it though, it just takes practice.

Learning to structure your writing however has huge benefits – even if you’re writing basic 30 word sentences or journals, you’re learning how the words connect to each other and how you can improve it with good feedback – something many of us can do and I can definitely do because of my writing experience.

Now that you understand, you can look at this blog post and look at its structure – There’s a beginning intro explaining what it is, the middle is an explanation, and next, a conclusion.

So there you have it – the basics of decent structure! If you want to learn more…well, we can probably offer some kind of services for it 😊

どういう意味だと思いますか？
さて、手始めに、あなたが上手く文章を書くことを学ぶとき、心の中で言語をより明確に構造化することを学ぶでしょう。
話すことは別のスキルであるため、話すには時間がかかります。
言葉は知っていても、それを流暢に話すことは筋肉と音の働きです。
ご存知でしょうが、それは話す練習が必要です。

しかし、書くには書く練習をする必要があります。
文章を書くこと、文章の構造を学ぶことには大きなメリットがあります。
30語程度の基本的な文章やジャーナルを書いている場合でも、単語がどのように相互に関連し、どのようにそれを改善できるかを学ぶことができます。
これは私たちの多くができることであり、少なくとも執筆経験がある私はできるようになりました。

文章の構造が理解できたら、このブログ記事の構造も分かるようになります。
最初にそれが何であるかを説明するイントロがあり、真ん中で説明をし、そして次に、結論があります。

これで、ちゃんとした文章構成の基本がわかりました！
それについてもっと学びたい場合は、そうですね、私たちはおそらく何らかのサポートができると思います😊

Reading

Hello everyone and a very happy new year,
One very good way to improve your English language skills is of course reading. Reading has many advantages, for a start the more you read the better of a reader you become. That means that your reading becomes easier and you can read faster!

Another great advantage of reading is that it improves your vocabulary, please always find a passage that is not too hard or too easy. Just a little bit above your level is good and when you encounter words that you don’t know, it’s a good idea to look them up online sometimes. 

Another good thing about reading is that it helps acquire grammar, many people think that by reading you improve your use of grammar subconsciously. Actually I believe that too. 

There is a tonne of resources for reading online and also don’t forget the reading we include here in Kensington with all our lesson materials.

知らない単語に出会ったときは、オンラインなどで調べることをお勧めします。

読むことのもう一つの良い点は、それが文法を習得するのを助けるということです。
多くの人は読むことによって無意識のうちに文法の使い方が良くなると思っていて、実は私もそう信じています。

The study advice I’d like give to myself and our students is
Setting a simple target every few months. For example, in the next 3 months, I want to be able to answer the teacher/classmates’ questions in more than 3 sentences, be able to understand the news on BBC, be able to explain to my teacher my work project in about 5 minutes…

例えば、次の3ヶ月で講師や他の生徒さんからの質問に3つ以上の文章で答えられる様になる、BBCのニュースを理解できる様になる、仕事のプロジェクトについて、5分間の説明を講師にできるようになる…などです。

Make a can-do list

I recently restarted studying Japanese. It’s been 10 years since I picked up a textbook but my speaking has improved a lot since then so instead of starting from scratch I’ve made a can do/ can’t do list to make it easier for me to focus on what I need.

This is a good idea for you too. Instead of going over what you already know again and again, why don’t you try and identify what you aren’t so good at and work on that?

For example if you have a good vocabulary but can’t make complicated sentences well, then it is time to work on your grammar. Good at passing tests but having difficulty holding a conversation? Then it’s time to get chatting.

Knowing what your strengths and weaknesses are can be difficult sometimes so if you need any guidance on what you should do from now on please ask any of our teachers anytime!

私は最近日本語の勉強を再開しました。

最後に教科書を開いてからもう10年が経ちますが、私のスピーキングスキルはとても上達しました。始める前に、まず必要な事にフォーカスを当てやすくするために、できる事とできない事のリストを走り書きしました。

みなさんにとってもこれは良いアイデアになるでしょう。既に知っている事を何度も繰り返すより、うまくできない事とできる事を認識しておきましょう。

例えば、あなたがボキャブラリーは豊富だが、複雑な文章を上手く作れないなら、文法を学ぶべきです。テストではよい点をを取れるけれど、会話を続けるのが難しいですか？それならお喋りをしてみましょう！

あなたの得意な事、苦手な事を知る事は難しいかもしれません。もしあなたが今後やるべき事のガイダンスが必要なら、いつでも私達の講師に質問してください！

If you can simplify, you’ve nailed it

A very powerful skill that is important to have is the ability to simplify your language or simplify an explanation.

I find that if you have difficulty explaining something to someone, you haven’t quite fully understood it yet. Once you’re able to explain it simply, with efficient word usage and ease of understanding, it means you have a very strong understanding of the concept.

It’s important to also apply this mindset to your English communication. A common observation with many students is, when asked a question, they tend to apply far too many words to their explanation, and complicate things.

Don’t worry about using so many adjectives! Think of they key words, think of how something is and why, and use simple grammar. Trust me on this, if you can do that, then your ability to apply more complicated language on top of it will massively increase over time.

身に付けるべきとても重要なスキルは、言語や表現をシンプルに簡素化する事です。

私は、もしあなたが誰かに何かを説明するのが難しいとしたら、まだその事を十分に理解していないのだと気づきました。効率的な単語とわかりやすさでシンプルに説明する事ができれば、あなたはコンセプトをとてもよく理解しているという事です。
この考え方は、英語でのコミュニケーションにとっても重要です。　　
一般的に、多くの生徒さんが質問をする時に多くの単語や説明をする傾向があり、物事をややこしくしてしまいます。

沢山の形容詞を使う事について心配する事はありません。キーワードについて考え、何がどのようになって、どうしてそうなるのかについて考え、シンプルな文法を使いましょう。私を信じて下さい。もしこれができれば、もっと複雑な言語にも対応する能力は、時間と共に大きく上達するでしょう。
