Come prepared to talk a lot about what you did past week

Hey everyone,

This is especially for the lower level students, Level 1s or lower level 2s. For you guys it’s always a good idea to spend some time thinking about what you did last week and trying to expand as much as possible. Many of our students now do that and it’s excellent practice.

Remember that what you did last week doesn’t need to be anything special, it can be a meal you made, a book you read, a TV program you watched etc. Talk as much as you can is always a great idea in our classes.

Studying with your kids

Hey guys, As a kid’s teacher I’ve had many conversations with parents about how they can help their kids learn English at home. I always give specific advice depending on a number of factors, but I think one general thing I say to parents always holds true: any English you practice at home in a positive way, will be beneficial for your kid. Though the message is simple, I think it is really important, as I know a lot of parents are not confident about their English, and/or they don’t know if what they’re doing is effective. The two biggest things are that you’re helping your child to enjoy learning English, and that you’re increasing the time your child spends with English, those are the key points. 

If you think you can’t help your kid’s English, then think again. Every parent in Japan has at least a basic understanding of English, with this you can do something like read to your children, which is an incredibly valuable way to learn English with your child (it’ll also help your own English, too!). Don’t worry about your pronunciation, or if you don’t understand every word, getting quality time together with a good book is the most important thing. Be confident, and enjoy learning English together with your family.

いつも、それぞれの状況に合った沢山のアドバイスをしますが、親御さんにお伝えする常に変わらないひとつの真実はこうです。
あなたが家で積極的に英語の練習をする事は、子供にとってとても価値があります。
メッセージはとてもシンプルですが、これはとても大切な事です。親御さんの多くは、自分達の英語に自信が無く、何をすれば効果があるのかわかりません。
最も効果的な２つの事は、子供が英語学習を楽しめる様にサポートしてあげる事と、あなたのお子さんが英語と共に過ごす時間を増やしてあげる事です。
これらがキーポイントになるのです。

もしあなたがお子さんの英語学習のサポートができないとお考えでも、もう一度考えてみて下さい。日本のご両親は皆さん最低限の英語は理解されていますので、例えば本を読んであげるなどができます。これはお子さんの英語学習にとても効果のある方法です。（あなた自身の英語の上達にも役立ちます！）
発音の心配はいりませんし、全ての単語が分からなくてもいいのです。良い本と共に良い時間を過ごす事が最も重要です。
自信を持ってご家族一緒に英語学習を楽しんで下さい。

Find Your Most “Active” Time

Heya, Denny here.

Something that I think is very important to understand with studying is knowing when you are most “awake” and alert.

Think about this a little bit. When, in the day, are you most “alert”? I find that about 2 hours after waking up, I’m quite energetic, active and focused. In the afternoon, I’m quite settled down, and in the evening I usually get sleepy.

This is because our bodies work in “cycles”. We have moments of active focus, and then we shift to a relaxed state. The best time to study is in those “active” phases, so think about when you feel the most alert, and put your study efforts there. In the relaxed phases, just relax! That’s when the memorization really takes place.

学び、理解するうえでとても重要なことは、いつあなたが最も目覚めていて、注意力があるかを知ることです。

私は、起床後2時間、とてもエネルギーに溢れ、活動的で、集中力があることに気が付きました。それは午後になると段々下がって来て、通常眠くなってしまいます。

これは、私達の身体がサイクルの中で機能しているからです。
活動的で集中力のある時間があり、その後はリラックスした状態に移行します。
勉強するのに最も良い時間は、この活動的な期間です。あなたが最も注意力があるのはいつか考え、そこに学習の力を注いでみましょう。リラックス状態の時には、ただリラックスしましょう！その時間こそが、記憶力が本当に発揮される時です。

Come prepared

 I think that one thing we don’t convey very clearly to our students is that the flashcards we use for preparation are meant to be not only for study but to prepare you for what we are going to talk about in class especially for levels 2 and 3 but also for level 1 students too. Memorising new words and phrases is of course great but you should probably be thinking about what you are going to talk about in class and how you are going to say it. In this way you’ll be looking for the right words or suitable expressions to use on the day and will be expanding your vocabulary and knowledge at the same time. I often see on class day that people have studied the cards and know what language to use but haven’t given much thought to a relevant situation or story that they can use with their partner. 

So the advice for today is simple, don’t just memorise but also try to imagine what you are going to talk about and how. It will improve your studies and also make your class more fun!

私達が生徒さんに明確にお伝えしていないなと思うことのひとつは、準備で使う「フラッシュカード」は、勉強のためだけでなく、特にレベル２、レベル３、そしてレベル1の生徒さんにも、レッスンの中話すための予習になるということです。
新しい単語やフレーズを記憶することはもちろん素晴らしいことです。しかし、あなたはレッスンで何を、どうやって話すかについて考えておくべきです。

そうすれば、皆さんはその日使う正しい単語や的確な表現を探し、同時にボキャブラリーや知識を増やすことができるでしょう。

レッスンでは、フラッシュカードを勉強し、どの言葉を使うかは知っているけれど、パートナーと一緒にトークで使える、関連のシチュエーションやストーリーについてはあまり考えていない人を良く見かけます。
そこで、今日のシンプルなアドバイスとしては、ただ覚えるのではなく、何をどのように話すのかを想像してみて下さい。これは、あなたの勉強を上達させるだけでなく、レッスンを更に楽しくしてくれますよ！

Take advantage of our Autumn Campaign

Hello everyone,

Did you notice some beautiful posters hanging in every classroom? They are introducing our autumn campaign and basically we are offering for a limited period of time the chance to all students to acquire extra private lessons for a lower cost than usual. 

Taking more private lessons is an excellent way to improve better and I would recommend these classes 

  1. Any student that wants to study intensively for a short period of time
  2. Group students that would like to improve their skills so they can go up a level 
  3. Group students that would like to do a level check and identify their areas of weakness and focus their classes on their weaker points
  4. Private students that are on our lower priced daytime course and would like to sometimes take classes in the evenings or on Saturdays

Reading for pleasure

Many students of foreign languages tend to stick too much to textbooks or study material. I think it’s a good idea to take a break from the textbooks and pick up, for example, a comic book and read it for fun/pleasure. When I was studying French, I used to enjoy reading comic series like  Les aventures de Tintin (Adventures of Tintin), Asterix le Gaulois etc . I had fun reading them and they helped me expand my vocabulary and expressions’ base.
Do you read any English publications (comics,novels, tracts, blogs etc) for pleasure?

外国語を学ぶ多くの生徒さんは、教科書や学習教材を使った学習にこだわり過ぎていると思います。教科書を勉強する合間に、例えば楽しくマンガを読んだりして休憩するのもいいアイデアだと思います。
私がフランス語を学んでいた時、Les aventures de Tintin (タンタンの冒険)、Asterix le Gaulois (アステリックスの冒険) などのマンガを読んでいました。それらを読んで楽しみながら、ボキャブラリーや基本的な表現を広げることもできました。
皆さんは、マンガ、小説、小冊子、ブログなど、何か英語の出版物を読んで楽しんでいますか？

 Enjoy the Struggle

Heya, Denny here.

I love philosophy, as many know, and one of the recent thoughts I’ve written about in my personal time is learning to enjoy struggle.

This is important and applies to your English, too – because learning a new language is often quite a struggle.

That said, by telling yourself to learn to enjoy it, you’re teaching your brain to release certain chemicals during the process – it makes it more engaging and you feel more motivated.

You can say that it’s “difficult”, but it really doesn’t help you out in any way. Learn to sit and enjoy, even if the subject is very hard – in the long term, you will excel!

皆さんの多くがご存知のように、私は哲学が好きです。最近、個人的な時間に執筆した考えの1つは、「もがき、努力すること」を楽しむことです。

これはあなたの英語の取り組みにも重要です。なぜなら新しい言語を学ぶ事は、とても大変な事が多いからです。
努力する事を楽しもう、と自分に言い聞かせることによって、その過程で特定の化学物質が出ることをあなたの脳に教えることが可能です。それによってより魅力的になり、モチベーションが上がるでしょう。

それは難しい、と言ってしまうことはできますが、それでは何の助けにもなりません。
あなたの課題がとても難しいものであっても、とりあえず座って、楽しむことを学んでみましょう。あなたはきっと優秀な人材になるでしょう！

Would it be wrong to take two

Hello there everyone,

My study advice today is really quite simple! Take more classes. I have noticed recently that not only in private lessons, but in group classes too, people seem to be able to get to grips with, feel more comfortable using, and tend to retain better what they have covered in class if they take two lessons back to back, especially for lower level students. Of course language acquisition won’t come overnight and our students have all done a great job of improving their language skills in their time with us, but why not speed up the process a bit? I really recommend some intensive study if you are just starting out as an English learner so you can see results quickly. In seeing quick results, you will feel motivated to do more and over time you will be able to scale back and study at a more leisurely pace, once you’ve mastered the basics. If you are one of our longer term students and need a bit of a change or a boost to your English confidence, some extra private lessons per month will definitely do wonders for your abilities and your confidence too.

例えば、続けて2レッスン受講した方が、学んだ事を良く把握し、スムーズに使え、より記憶に残る傾向があります。これはプライベートレッスンに限らずグループレッスンも同様で、特に初心者やベーシックレベルの皆さんには効果的です。

もちろん言語は一晩で習得できるものではなく、生徒さんは皆、私達との時間の中で、英語スキルの上達のためにとても良くやっていらっしゃいます。
でも、その過程をもう少しスピードアップしませんか？
あなたがちょうど英語の勉強を始めたばかりなら特に、早く結果を出すために、集中的な学習をお勧めします。
早く結果を出すことでさらにやる気が出るでしょう。一度基礎を身につけた後は、時間を減らし、もっとゆっくりとしたペースで学ぶことができます。
長く学んでいる生徒さんで、少しの変化が欲しい方、英語の自信を高めたい方は、月に数回のプライベートレッスンの追加で、必ず能力や自信を付けることができるでしょう。
