Rina’s Blog – 世界遺産

みなさんこんにちは!
今週末のレッスンテーマは、「世界遺産
”World Heritage Sites”

The word turnover means two different things in Business English. One of its meanings is simply “income” and the second meaning is the rate at which employees leave a workforce and are replaced. How’s the employee turnover at your company?

(Employee) turnover
(労働者の)移動率

the rate at which employees join and leave a company

従業員の新規雇用率・離職率

“Employee turnover at many English schools in Japan is very high due to bad management, bad salary and bad working conditions.”

“お粗末な経営、低い給与、劣悪な労働環境のせいで、日本では、多くの英語学校における離職率が非常に高い。”

英語の勉強法ー日本語脳をオフにしよう。パート1.

How to study English – switch off your Japanese brain-part one

Hi everybody, today I’m going to give you a little advice on how to become a more natural speaker and that is to switch off your Japanese brain when speaking in English.

I’ve noticed thing a lot of students do is try to directly translate words or phrases from Japanese into English. This is of course natural when you are starting out and have a limited vocabulary but as you progress it is really a good idea to get out of the habit, directly translating words or phrases( especially idioms) can cause major confusion.

Today I will explain something that everyone finds tricky and that is how in English when describing a noun we tend to use a combination of noun first and then description whereas in Japanese the description of the noun comes first.

For example here is what an incorrect sentence would sound like.

I met last week teacher was very kind..

I‘ve been in Japan a while so I know what you want to say.

 先週会った先生はとても優しかった。

Like I said above we don’t describe the noun first in English usually start the sentence with the to show a specific and then give the description at the end so..

The teacher I met last week was very nice.

 Here is another incorrect example.

We often go to Thai restaurant is so good.

 私達が良く行くタイレストランはすごく美味しいです。

Same again start with the  then give the noun and the explanation.

The Thai restaurant we always go to is so good.

 And so on

I often go to bar X

僕がよく行くバー

the bar I often go to O

I bought other day bag X

 この間買ったカバン

the bag I bought the other day O

So you can probably see a pattern forming can’t you? That is all you have to do but it takes a little time to get used to. Once it is done it is done though and after a bit of practice it will become natural to you so keep at it and try to remember to switch off your Japanese brain!

 Good luck.

 Jaimie.

I met last week teacher was very kind..

 私はしばらく日本に住んでいるので、言いたい事は分かります。

 でも、「先週会った先生はとても優しかった」

と言いたい場合、さきほどの例文のように英語では最初に名詞(主語)を記述せず、文頭は”The”から始まる特記すべきものを書いたあとに、その”The〜”に対する説明が続きます。

The teacher I met last week was very nice.

 こちらは他の間違った例文です。

We often go to Thai restaurant is so good. 私達が良く行くタイレストランはすごく美味しいです。

 これもさきほどと同じく、Theから始まりそのあとに説明する文が続きます。

The Thai restaurant we always go to is so good.

 例文です。

I often go to bar ×

 僕がよく行くバー

the bar I often go to ○

I bought other day bag ×

 この間買ったカバン

the bag I bought the other day ○

 だんだん分かってきたでしょう?どんなときもこう考えないといけませんが、慣れるまでにちょっと時間がかかるかもしれません。1つ1つやって練習すれば自然にできるようになりますので続けてくださいね。そして日本語脳をスイッチオフすることを忘れないでください!

 がんばってください!

日常英会話レッスン ‐ イギリスのスラング “cost a bomb”

Since this weekend’s lessons are about brands I’d like to show you how to use this British English expression.

Cost a bomb
Cost a bomb means something is very expensive.

For example..
I’m not buying those shoes, they cost a bomb!

You can also use the term cost an arm and a leg I’m not sure if it’s a British expression or not but I like it.
I ate at the new steak restaurant in town last night. The food was good but it cost an arm and a leg!

Hope you get the chance to use those one day.
Jaimie

今週末のレッスンはブランドのついてですが、ここでイギリス英語の表現を紹介します。

Cost a bomb
Cost a bombは「とても高価な」という意味です。

例えば….
私はこの靴を買わなかったよ。だってとっても高いんだもん!

これはイギリス英語かちょっとわかりませんが、 cost an arm and a legも同じ意味で使えます。
私は昨夜ステーキを食べました。ご飯は美味しかったけど、とっても高かったです!

イギリススラングを使うチャンスがあるといいですねッ。

Aya’s blog – ワーキングホリデーの苦い思い出

Aya’s blog –

Sweater
<ズボン>
イギリス英語 trousers
アメリカ英語 Pants
<マフラー>
イギリス英語 Scarf
アメリカ英語 Muffler
<スニーカー>
イギリス英語 Trainers
アメリカ英語 Sneakers
<サンダル>
イギリス・アメリカ英語 Flip flops

でも悔しくって恥ずかしかった分、単語はすぐに覚えたし、何回も聞くと自然に覚えるものですねッ!これから留学やワーホリをされる方、もちろん楽しいことの方が多いですが、泣きたくなる事もあります。でもせっかくの海外生活、思いっきり楽しんでくださいねっ!

ビジネス英語でよく使う表現 – bring to the table

Hello everyone!

Today’s business English expression is an idiomatic expression meaning that it can’t be taken literally and must be learned for what it is.

The expression we are using today is “bring to the table”
有利な物を提供する

This means offer or have something to offer.

For example, we could use it to talk about what we have to offer another firm or client.
“I think the deal should go down quite smoothly, we have a lot to bring to the table”
“取引が円滑に進むように、私は有利な物を提供した。”
Or we can use it to talk about what can be offered to us.
“I’d like to meet with the manager first and see what he can bring to the table”
“先にマネージャーに会い、彼が何を提供するか見てみたい。”

Hope that comes in handy.

英語を勉強する方法。- もっと流暢に話すには – 2)単語と単語を繋げて発音をよくしよう

How to study English- How to be a more fluent speaker – 2)Improving Intonation Connecting Sounds between words.

Fluent English speakers don’t pronounce every word in a sentence individually, we connect the sounds between words which makes the language sound smoother.

There are no set rules for connecting sounds but the best way is to learn is to extend the ends of your words and let them connect with the next word naturally.

For example: “I am an office worker” Do not read all these words individually:                                A natural sound would be “I’m’noffice worker”  or “Have you been to Spain?” should sound more like “Hav’u’binto Spain?”

Doing this will make you sound more fluent and gives your speech a better flow.. I have been starting concentrating on more natural intonation from our students recently. Please if you have any questions ask me anytime you’d like!

_____________________________________________________________________________________

“Have you been to Spain?”“Hav’u’binto Spain?”

put my baggage in the overhead compartment 荷物を上の荷物入れに入れる

take a seat 席に座る

fasten my seatbelt シートベルトを締める

turn off all electronic devices 電気機器の電源を全て切る

set my phone to airplane mode 携帯を機内モードにする

the plane takes off 飛行機が離陸する

the plane lands 飛行機が着陸する

役立ついくつかの機内での英語は、何か提供されるときのキャビンアテンダントとのコミュニケーションの仕方も含んでいます。

Would you like some coffee or tea? コーヒーか紅茶はいかがですか。

I’d like some coffee, please. コーヒーをいただけますか。

Nothing, thank you. 何もいりません、ありがとう。

How do you take it? お砂糖やミルクはどうしましょうか。

With sugar and a little milk please. 砂糖、それからミルクを少しでお願いします。

Here you are! はいどうぞ!

以下、機内でのリクエストの仕方です。

Can I have some orange juice please? オレンジジュースをもらえますか?

Can I have a blanket please? 毛布をお願いできますか?

Could you speak more slowly please? もっとゆっくり話していただけませんか?

Could you help me put this bag in the overhead compartment? この鞄を上の荷物入れに入れるのを手伝っていただけませんか。

そして、よりハイレベルな言い方として、Can I の替わりにwould it be possible to を使った表現です。

Would it be possible to change seats with someone? 席を替わることは可能でしょうか。

Would it be possible to have an extra blanket? 毛布を1枚余分にいただくことはできますでしょうか。

また教室で会いましょう!
