日常英会語レッスン – イギリスのスラング – Brilliant

Today I’ll introduce you one of my favourite words. “Brilliant”.
‘Brilliant’ is not a word exclusively in the British lexicon, but has a very British usage. Specifically, when something is exciting or wonderful, particularly when something is good news, ‘brilliant’ can mean as such.

Ex. You got the job? That’s brilliant!

日常英会語レッスン – イギリスのスラング – Brilliant

Brilliant
「すんばらしい」

Brilliant はイギリス英語でのみ使われる言葉ではありませんが、とてもイギリスらしい使い方があります。特に、わくわくすることや素晴らしいこと、とりわけよい知らせがあるときに、brilliant が使えます。

例) 仕事、見つかったの?そりゃすごい!

Rina’s Blog – ハワイ

Rina’s Blog –

Hello everyone, I hope you are having a fantastic start to the new week. Today, I’l introduce one more amazingly useful business English expression; “break even”. It means the point of time when your sales are equal to your costs. Use at will!

break even
損得なしになる

reach a point in a business venture when the sales are equal to the costs.
投機的事業において、売上高が経費の額と等しい時点に達する

ex. “After a few months the company was able to break even and even begun to make a profit. ”
“数か月後、会社は収支をとんとんにすることができ、利益すら出しはじめた。”

英語の勉強法 – 考えすぎないで!

Hi everyone, today my advice to you is……don’t fight it! Just accept that the English language is different from yours and your life will be much simpler.

A student of mine asked me recently why we don’t use a/an in front of the words breakfast, lunch, and dinner and my honest answer was that I didn’t really know but that is best to just remember that as a set and not think too much about it.

As  a teacher, I do get asked questions that I can’t immediately answer, so I usually check them out and answer at the next lesson or later in the day, but sometimes the answer is simply to not think to deeply about it and just memorise it as it is.

I remember having the same problem with Japanese grammar when I learned
「山に登る」 for the for first time and being really frustrated because it didn’t make any sense to my English brain, surely it must be「 山を登る」 is what I thought and the whole Japanese language just seemed like a complete nightmare to me.

Luckily for me, my teacher was very direct and told me to stop asking her questions about why the grammar is like that and why we say this and that . She told me to just accept it and stop complaining all the time!

And that is my advice to you today too, sometimes there is no point in looking for an explanation, there is no need, because it is what it is, and that is that.

Of course in our lessons we will teach you why we use certain grammar when it is necessary, the same for spelling and idioms in English, which can be thoroughly confusing sometimes, and we will try our best to answer all of your questions for you but the English language is pretty big, over a million words and growing, so sometimes it really is best not to fight it!

Give it a try.
Jaimie

P.S.  Even after extensive research I never found the answer to the breakfast, lunch, and dinner question.

Jaimie

P.S 結構breakfast, lunch, and dinnerについて調べましたが、結局答えを見つける事は出来ませんでした。

トラベル英会話 – 海外の病院にて

Hi everyone. Today I’m going to show you some of the things you may need to know in the unfortunate event of becoming sick while on holiday.  In the U.K we don’t really have so many specialised clinics like you do here in Japan so everyone just goes to the local G.P (general practitioner) when they have a common illness or complaint.

We always have to make an appointment ( you may be kept waiting for some time though so please don’t be surprised) and the same as in Japan, you will be asked some general questions about your health, allergies, and medicine you are taking.

Here are some of the basic things you will need to know when visiting the doctor overseas.

general practitioner 一般開業医
Kensington Clinic, Iwamura speaking. (電話で)ケンジントン医院、岩村です。
How may I help you? どのようなご用件でしょうか。
Hello, I’d like to make an appointment for 9:00 a.m. tomorrow please. もしもし、明日午前9時に、予約をお願いしたいのですが。
Okay, may I have your name and phone number please? 分かりました、お名前とご連絡先をいただけますか。
Yes, my name’s ….and my number is.. はい、(名前)と申します。 電話番号は……です。
Are you taking any medicine now? 今、何か薬を飲んでいますか。
Yes, I’m taking sleeping pills. はい、睡眠薬を飲んでいます。
Do you have any allergies? 何かアレルギーはありますか。
Yes, I’m allergic to nuts. はい、ナッツのアレルギーです。
Do you have any serious illnesses? 何か重い病気にかかっていますか。

a sore throat 喉の痛み
a cough 咳
a runny nose 鼻水(鼻水の垂れている鼻)
a blocked nose 鼻づまり
a fever 熱
a loss of appetite 食欲不振
chills 寒気
vomiting 嘔吐
nausea 吐き気
diarrhea 下痢
stomach cramps 胃けいれん
joint pain 関節痛
a headache 頭痛

Good morning Ms Sato. What seems to be the trouble today? おはようございます、佐藤様。今日はどうなさいましたか。
I’ve had a fever and a sore throat since yesterday. 昨日から、熱と喉の痛みがあります。
I see. Have you had  chills? 分かりました、寒気はありますか。
No, I haven’t. いいえ、ありません。
You have the flu. I will prescribe you some medicine. インフルのようですね。薬を処方します。
You should take this twice a day. これを一日に二回飲むとよいでしょう。
You should  rest for a few days. 数日ゆっくりするとよいでしょう。
You shouldn’t go to work. 仕事には行かないほうがよいでしょう。
You shouldn’t drink alcohol. お酒は控えたほうがよいでしょう。
You should finish all the medicine.

Bob’s your uncle

Bob’s your uncle.

Hello everybody, today I’m going to show you bit of a strange expression that we use in the U.K.

Bob’s your uncle.
Bob’s your uncle means “ And that’s it.” or “ And there you go” so we use it at the end of a sentence to show that the process was simple and is now complete.

For example when cooking something.
For scrambled eggs, beat a couple of eggs, add milk, salt and pepper, melt butter in a pan, add mix, stir while cooking slowly and Bob’s your uncle!

Or when you are describing a process.
All you do is phone, the company, give them your I.D number, tell them your address, and Bob’s your uncle, your package will be there in 3 days.

Hope you find that useful.
Jaimie

日常英会話レッスン – イギリスのスラング Bob’s your uncle

Bob’s your uncle
以上です/これで終わり

皆さんこんにちは。今日はちょっとおかしなイギリススラングをご紹介いたします。

Bob’s your uncle
Bob’s your uncle

Aya’s blog – イギリスのいいところ

Aya’s blog –

4. Fish and chips
