ビジネス英会話でよく使う表現-“ go pear shaped”

Hi there everyone. Cold enough for you?

Today’s fruity business expression is “ go pear shaped”

Go pear shaped means that something is going badly or wrong, it isn’t only used in business English though, we use it in daily conversation as well.

For example

“This deal is starting to go a bit pear shaped, let’s get in touch with our clients, arrange a meeting and get this thing back on track.”

Or

The staff Christmas party went a bit pear shaped after the president had one too many tequila shots.

How to study English – go back over this year

The end of the year is nearly upon us and the subjects at the weekend in Akasaka, Ropponmatsu, and Yakuin will be “Best of the year” and “ Looking back on the year” this weekend and next, so my advice today is to go back over the lessons you have taken this year and review them to get a look at what you have think you have mastered or should be working on next year.

The Quizlet application we use also has a list of answers that you often get wrong so it probably best to go through them and make sure you fully understand them now. Reviewing is a very important part of language learning, so if you find the time at the end of the year I suggest you take some time to do it.

Of course if there is something you are still unsure of feel free to ask myself , Tim or any of the other teachers whatever you like when you come back to the school next year.

クイズレット(予習サイト)では、あなたがよく間違える答えのリストを見ることが出来ます。なのでそれをもう一度見て、本当に今理解出来ているのかを確認するのが良いでしょう。復習は言語を学ぶ上でとても重要です。もし年末に時間があったら、復習の時間を取ることをおすすめします。もちろん、もし分からないことがあれば、来年教室に来た時に私やTimや他の先生に遠慮なく聞いてくださいね。

Travel English – How to fight off shop assistants

Hello there, ever been shopping or eaten out abroad? It can be pretty terrifying actually especially if you are just window shopping or can’t make up your mind what to order.

Here are a few phrases to help you out.

First of all the staff in the shops will almost always ask you

“Can I help you?”

“No thank you.” is a bit direct so it’s nicer to say…

“No, I’m just looking thanks.”

Or..

“No, I’m just browsing thank you.”

If you are waiting for  a staff member and another person approaches you with the same question you can say…

“I’m being served, thank you.”

And finally if your waiter asks you “ Are you ready to order?”

You can say..

“No, not quite.”  Or “No, just a moment please.”

Which are much better that a flat “No.”

トラベル英会話ーショップ店員との戦い方

こんにちは、海外で買い物や外食をしたことがありますか？それって実に怖いですよね、特にただウィンドウショッピングしているだけの時や、思っていた物を頼めない時など。。

あなたを助けるいくつかのフレーズです。

まず始めにほとんどの店員さんがこう言います。

“Can I help you?”　「何かお伺いしましょうか？」

“No thank you.” 「いいえ、結構です。」はちょっと直接的すぎるので、より良い言い方は

“No, I’m just looking thanks.”か、“No, I’m just browsing thank you.”　「いいえ、ただ見ているだけです、ありがとう。」です。

もし、あなたが店員さんを待っている間に、他の店員さんが来て同じ質問をして来たら、

“I’m being served, thank you.”「今、やってもらってます。(サービスを受けています。)ありがとう」と言いましょう。

最後に、レストランでウエイターが ”オーダーお伺いしましょうか？”と聞いて来たら

“No, not quite.”  「いいえ、まだです。」か、“No, just a moment please.”「いいえ、ちょっと待ってください。」と言います。これらは、ただNoと言うより断然良いです。

Hello again, Friday seems to come around very quickly and since we are here again it is time for some beautiful British English again!

Today I will show you the word “flog”.

Flog is simply the slang for sell so it is really easy to just replace sell with flog in a sentence like this..

“I’m flogging my old computer off and buying a new one next week.”

“You should get down to the market today, they are flogging off all the summer gear really cheap.”
