日常英会話レッスン – Donkey’s years

Hello again!

This Friday’s British English expression is carrying on the theme of animals. Today we are talking about “donkeys years” which just means a very long time. Sometimes this phrase is shortened to “donks”

For example

“Hey Tim, how are you, I haven’t seen you in donkey’s years!”

“Not so hot actually, my whole family have just come down with the flu!”

今週末のレッスン内容- Banks and money

Hi there everyone, out topic for this weekend in the Akasaka, Yakuin and Ropponmatsu schools will be banks and money.

Sounds a little on the serious side I know but it will certainly provide you with some useful skills if you are ever staying overseas for a long period of time.

We will be talking about different currencies, practicing large numbers, doing a short roleplay at the bank, and having a general conversation about money. In levels 2 and 3 we will be using some idiomatic expressions about money too.

みなさんこんにちは。赤坂校、薬院校、六本松校での今週末のレッスン内容は銀行とお金です。

少々固いイメージに感じますが、もし、みなさんが海外で長期滞在する際は必ず役に立つスキルになると思います。

通貨の違いについて話し、大きい金額の練習をして、銀行でのちょっとしたロールプレイをします。そして、お金についての一般的な会話をします。レベル２とレベル３では、お金に関する慣用的な表現を使います。

ケンジントン英会話ニュース – Tonerico

Hi there everyone, I hate to sound like a broken record here,but don’t forget that the deadline for booking and payment of the all English party at Tonerico cafe is the 24th of this month! Friends and family are welcome too!

ビジネス英会話でよく使う表現 – a ballpark figure

Hi there everyone, hope you all had a great time over the weekend.

Today’s business expression is “ a ballpark figure” . It means to give rough amount or estimate of the cost of something.

For example..

The government have given 1 billion yen as a ballpark figure for the construction of the new stadium.

I can’t say exactly how much we will have to cut back on expenses, but I can give you a ballpark figure of about a million yen per month.

How to study English – A self-study book for beginners

Students very often ask me to recommend me some books for them to study, and it’s very difficult for me because most of the Japanese English self-study books I see in Japan are in my opinion not very good. The good thing is that as long as you are studying, any book is probably OK. Anyway, I’d like to recommend you a good self study book that we found recently.

This is the book. I think it’s a very useful book for our beginner students to help the with basic grammar concepts and sentence construction in English. It’s in our Yakuin classroom now so please take a look at it there if you are interested before you actually buy it, I’ll bring it to our Akasaka classroom at some point next week.

生徒さんはよく私に勉強するのにおすすめの本を尋ねますが、それは私にとってとっても難しいことなのです。なぜなら私の意見では多くの自己学習用の本はあまりいいものがないからです。ここで勉強している限りはどの本もおそらく大丈夫だと思いますが、自己学習用のいい本を最近見つけたので、おすすめしたいと思います。

これです。基本的な文法や文章の組み立て方がわかるので、おそらく初心者の生徒さんたちにとても役立つと思います。今この本は薬院校にあるので、興味があれば是非購入する前に手に取ってみてください。来週赤坂校にも持っていきます。

Travel English- Using English at the airport – At the customs/immigration

When we arrive at a foreign country, we usually have to tell immigration or customs the reason why we are travelling to the country.

Here are some possible answers.

I’m here sightseeing.
I have a connecting flight.
I am traveling for work/leisure/sightseeing.
I’m visiting friends/family.

Also we usually need to answer the duration and location of our stay using:

I’ll stay here for …. days
I’m staying at ….. Hotel.

ケンジントン英会話ニュース – Tonerico English Party on the 27th

Hello guys,

I’m sure you’ll be all very excited to hear that we’ll be holding our English party on Jan 27th.

Last party was loads of fun and also an excellent opportunity for our students to meet other students and to practice the English they had been learning in a more real life environment.

We are going to tweak the party this time, we are going to start with general talk and introductions in pairs just as last time but this time we’ll also include some themed tables were students can talk about some pre-decided subjects. We’ll give you more information on that next week.

For the time being be quick to make a reservation please as there is only space for 30 people and last time it was filled up very very soon.

今週末のレッスン内容- Winter

Hello everyone,

This weekend in our Akasaka, Ropponmatsu and Yakuin classrooms we’ll be talking about winter. We’ll start the class with talking about how we spent New Year’s.

Then we’ll talk about what we like about winter (Christmas!!), what we don’t like about it (It’s too cold!), our winter habits and activities, winter traditions and our plans for this winter.
