今週末のレッスン内容 – Last weekend

Hello there everyone, this weekend’s topic in the Akasaka, Ropponmatsu, and Yakuin schools will be “ Last weekend”.

We will simply be using the present tense to talk about what you usually do at the weekends, and the past tense to talk about how you spent last weekend or the weekend before last. We will be discussing some good or bad weekends you’ve had recently and what your idea of the perfect weekend is.

Business-talk until you are blue in the face

Hi there everyone, today’s business English expression is “talk until you are blue in the face” which means to try and persuade someone to do something but ultimately fail.

For example…

I talked with him until I was blue in the face but I still couldn’t persuade him to give everyone a better bonus this year.

How to study English－難しい！

Hello there everyone, today I would like to deprogram your brains! I often hear that English is “難しい！”or” I don’t speak English.”

I don’t think so.

There seems to be some kind of myth surrounding English in Japan that speaking the language is something which is incredibly difficult, but this is not something you hear from say European non native speakers.

I think that with this kind of mentality it will be very difficult to learn anything. Instead of thinking English is difficult, why not think of it as challenging or something that you really enjoy learning/ using. The “ I don’t speak English” thing will also hold you back, you DO and ARE speaking English with us at the school every week which is a wonderful thing and you should be proud of the fact that you are making the effort!

So, my advice for today is simply to set your brain to positive mode when it comes to English. It will make all the difference in the world.

皆さんこんにちは、今日はあなたの洗脳を解きたいと思います！私はよく、“英語って難しい！”とか“英語話せない！”とか聞きます。

私はそうは思いません。

日本では、英語を話すのはとんでもなく難しいことだという神話のようなものが蔓延しています。でも、ネイティブでないヨーロッパの人たちはそうは言いません。

私は、このような考えでは何を学ぶにしてもとても難しいと思います。英語は難しいと考える代わりに、これはやりがいがあることだ、そして学んだり使ったりすることって楽しいんだと思ってみてはいかがでしょうか？“英語を話さない”という考えはあなたの妨げになります。あなたは毎週スクールで私たちと英語を話していますし、それはとても素晴らしいことです。あなたが努力しているということに、もっと自信を持ってください！

ですから私の今日のアドバイスは、英語に関して、単に脳をポジティブモードに切り替えようということです。きっと捉え方が随分と変わってきますよ。

Travel English -phone stuff

Hello again, last year I went back to the U.K and my phone  automatically connected itself to wifi which cost me a nice 95,000 yen phone bill for August. Lovely!

So today , I will introduce a few phone related phrases that may be useful to you when travelling overseas.

Hello, I’d like to change the sim card on my phone please.

Hello, do you sell, disposable phones here?

Excuse me, does this hotel have wifi?

Excuse me could you tell me the wifi password please?

Excuse me could you show me how to switch off data roaming please?

日常英会話レッスン -phone expressions

Hello there everyone, I had a wonderful pain free experience in the Apple Store last week so I’m mostly going to be talking about topics connected to phones this week.

Here are a few phone related expressions.

・Pocket dial
When you accidentally call someone without knowing it when you are walking and your phone is in your pocket.

・Hang up on someone
Can mean both to just end the call or to end the call abruptly mid sentence for example when you are angry or having a quarrel.

・Pick up the phone
This just means to answer the phone.

・Call back
To return a call.

・Put on hold.
To make someone wait on the phone.

Today I’d like to recommend you another very useful site, where you can Improve your listening ability. The site is http://www.esl-lab.com/ and it has audio and exercises in three different levels.

The easy level is not so easy actually but you can press [ Quiz Script ] on the top of the page and you can see the audioscript. That’s very very useful when doing a listening exercise.

Travel English – Travelling in Asia

Hello everyone,
Thank you to all the students that came to the party last Saturday, it was very fun!

This weekend’s subject in Kensington is travelling in Asia.
I have travelled to a few countries in Asia, Singapore, China, Korea, Hong Kong, Thailand, Cambogia and Vietnam. My favourite country of these is probably Vietnam, it’s a very beautiful country with great food and a very rich culture.

I’ve been there 3 times already and I hope to go there many times more. How about you? What is your favourite country in Asia?
