How to deal with audio trouble on a zoom call in English

Hello everyone,

As you well know, Kensington Eikaiwa has lessons both at our classrooms in Fukuoka city but also online. So for those of you that take online classes, here are some expressions to use when you have got audio trouble.

I’m sorry but I can’t hear you very well.
Let me check my microphone, maybe the problem is on my end.
I can hear you but there is some audio lag.
Shall we restart the meeting?

Hope that’s helpful!
Tim

Take more review classes

Hello everyone,

One thing that I think is really important for language acquisition is to review words and expressions that you have learnt before. It’s quite likely that if you don’t review your past classes, they’ll gradually fade from your memory.

For our private students that come 4 times a month we can use the last lesson of the month for review of the 3 lessons that we’ve practiced before.

For our private students that come twice a month or for our group students, why don’t you ask for an extra private class now and then? They are as cheap as 4,500yen/class (depending on the time you take them) and they would be a great compliment to your classes!

If you are interested in either of the above, please let us know!

Tim

What are some famous Greek foods?

Hi guys,

Did you all know that I come from Greece? Well if you didn’t, you do now. Students who hear that for the first time sometimes ask me what some famous Greek foods are.

I think the most famous Greek food is the “souvlaki”.
Souvlaki is Greece’s favourite fast food, it’s chunks of skewered pork served with chopped tomatoes and onions in pitta bread with tzatziki ( tzatziki is yogurt mixed with cucumbers, garlic, salt, olive oil and dill).

I love Souvlaki, it’s the food I miss the most from my country. Last time I went to Greece, I stayed there for 10 days and ate souvlaki on every day for both lunch and dinner. Yes, it’s that delicious!!

Hope you can try it somewhere or after the pandemic is over, we can open a Greek restaurant for you in Fukuoka to enjoy “souvlaki”!

See you,
Tim

豚肉の串焼きで刻んだトマトや玉ねぎと一緒にピタ(パン)に はさみ、“tzatziki(ザジキ=きゅうり、ニンニク、塩、オリーブ、ディルをヨーグルトに混ぜたもの)” を添えて出されます。

Talking about Health in English

Hello everyone,

This weekend in our classes in Akasaka, Nishijin, Yakuin and online we are going to be talking about Health. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic health is quite a seasonal topic unfortunately but we are not going to be talking about the coronavirus in class.

We’ll learn how to talk about different sicknesses and symptoms in English, how to respond to bad news and also how to give and respond to advice in English too.

Health is one of the first Kensington classes we’ve ever made and it has stayed mostly unchanged over the years. I updated it slightly this time so it’s hopefully better than ever!

You can access the youtube videos here
Level 1/2
Level 2/3

Enjoy!
Tim

Monday Business English – “pick up”

Hello again everyone and happy Monday!

Today’s beautiful business English expression is “pick up” . We use this to describe becoming busy after a spell of inactivity.

For example,

“Business was slow during lockdown but now it’s been lifted it’s starting to pick up again.”

Hope that comes in handy.

Jaimie

How to study– Present simple versus present continuous.

Hello there everyone,

There are many little mistakes that our students make and a lot of them are connected to differences in grammar between English and Japanese. This is a good example. In English we don’t use certain states of mind in the present continuous.

For example

know, believe, like, love, hate,

So where you would say “ティムは知っていますか” “ はい、知っています。” in Japanese you would never say “ Are you knowing Tim?” “Yes, I am knowing him” in English. It’s

“Do you know Tim?”
“Yes, I do”

Similarly

I am believing in God. X
I believe in God. O

I am hating natto. X
I hate natto. O

Hope that comes in handy.

Jaimie

know(知る), believe(信じる), like(好む), love(大好きである), hate(嫌う),

というところも、英語では “ Are you knowing Tim?” “Yes, I am knowing him” とは言わないのです。

“Do you know Tim?” 「
“Yes, I do” 「はい、知っています。」

I am believing in God.
【正】I believe in God.

【誤】I am hating natto.
【正】I hate natto.

Bread and Butter

Hello there everyone,

This isn’t technically a blog about food but since we are talking about money this weekend I’d like to show you this food related idiom.

Bread and Butter

This is what we use when we talk about a person’s main source of income.

Taxi drivers get a fair bit of trade from local customers but their bread and butter is pick ups to and from the airport.

Hope that comes in handy.

Jaimie

Bread and Butter

Tsuyu-iri !?

Hello there everyone,

As you know 梅雨 has started in Fukuoka City and it is time for us to hang our washing out indoors once again!

In English 梅雨 is known as “the rainy season” and if you want to talk about 梅雨入り you can either say..

“The rainy season has started in Fukuoka City “

or

“The rainy season has set in in Fukuoka City.”

We often use “set in” to talk about weather for example

“Winter set in late last year. It didn’t really get cold till January”.

Jaimie
