Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Expand more

Hi everyone,

One great way to improve your English and to best utilize our classes is to try and expand more. As you know our classes are focused on communication and trying to make an as natural as possible conversation about our subject while using the grammar and vocabulary you have pre-studied.

In order though to achieve more natural communication it’s important to challenge yourselves in class and try to expand more when asked a question or when talking about your news.. It can be pretty hard sometimes of course, especially in lower levels, but it’s very important to try. By trying we of course are going to fail a lot, make many mistakes but that is a crucial part of learning.

In my classes from now on, I’ll be asking you to  “Tell me more” so I can help you expand more,

あなたの英語力を向上をさせ、レッスンでも役立つ最も素晴らしい方法は、もっと試すことと、話を展開することです。

ご存知の通り、私達のレッスンはコミュニケーションに特化していて、皆さんが予習した文法や単語を使いながら、できるだけ自然にサブジェクトについての会話ができる様にしています。

自然なコミュニケーションができる様になるためには、レッスンの中であなた自身がチャレンジすることと、質問されたりあなた自身のニュースについて話している時に、もっと話を広げられる様にトライすることが重要です。もちろん、かなり大変に感じることもあるかもしれません。しかし特に初級レベルにおいてはとても大切な試みです。たくさんミスをするのは当然です、でもこれは学習にとってとても大切なことなのです。

今後の私のレッスンでは、皆さんに「もっと話して」とお願いすることにします、きっと皆さんのお話を展開する手助けができることでしょう。

 My targets for this year

Hi everyone,

Today I’d like to talk to you about our school’s mission which is three-folded:
Our school’s mission is to

  • Create the best learning experience in the market for both kids and adults
  • Do everything in our power to help our students reach their goals
  • Be a great place to work and create

Those three statements above are very important to us and guide every decision we make. Those of you that have stayed with us for a long time (Thank you guys, we love you!!) have noticed that Kensington is always changing, always adding new features, always trying to improve. 

Creating the best learning experience in the market is a long and exciting journey and we have some great ideas to improve this year too and I can’t wait to share them with you in future blogs!

One of the grammar targets of our classes this week is the use of “use it for/to” to convey purpose.

For example,

J: What’s your favourite work app?

T: My favourite app is Slack.

J: I see, what do you use Slack for?

T: I use Slack to communicate with my coworkers and to keep work-related notes Make sure to pre-study our material well and see you in class!

This week’s subject
Mobile Phones

Hello everyone, 

This week’s lesson target is to have a natural conversation about mobile phones. During that natural conversation we are going to as always be hitting some Vocab and Grammar targets.

Some of the things we’ll be practicing in our Level 1 and 2 Mobile Phone classes are

  • A general review of our level 1 grammar
  • Practice follow up questions to continue the conversation
  • Learn a lot of phone-related vocabulary

Our level 3 classes as always we’ll be focusing on expressing opinions, expansion and having a very natural conversation about phones.

This class is an excellent class to test what you have learnt in Kensington so far!

今週のレッスン目標は「携帯電話について、自然な会話をする」
自然な会話の中では、常にいくつかのボキャブラリーと文法の習得を目指します。レベル1とレベル2のレッスンで練習することのいくつかはこちらです。

  • レベル1で学ぶ一般的な文法の再確認
  • フォローアップクエスチョンを使って会話を続ける練習
  • 携帯電話に関するたくさんの単語

レベル3では、自分の意見の表現や会話の展開に常に焦点を当てています。携帯電話に関して、とても自然に会話する練習をしましょう。

今週は、皆さんが今までケンジントンで学習したことを試す、素晴らしいレッスンです！

What we are doing in Kensington
We are becoming better teachers

In Kensington, we are always striving to improve your learning experience and even though we believe our classes to be really good we also believe that everything can be improved further.

For that purpose a few weeks ago we held our first Kensington feedback session for our teachers. The format is pretty simple, we record one of our classes, all the teachers see it and give feedback, focusing mostly on what we can improve.

We started last Friday with my class, I received a lot of constructive feedback which I feel really thankful for and I’m looking forward to utilizing it in my classes.

より良い講師になるために

ケンジントンでは皆さんの英語学習の上達のために常に努力を続けています。それだけでなく、レッスンが本当に良いものになると信じていますし、全てがより進化して行けると信じています。

これらの目標に向けて、数週間前に初回の講師のフィードバックセッションを行いました。フォーマットはとてもシンプルで、講師達は録画した1つのレッスンを見て、より進化するためにできる事を中心に意見のフィードバックをするのです。

前回の金曜の私のレッスンから始めました。私はたくさんの建設的なフィードバックを得ることができ、とても感謝しています。これを今後のレッスンで役立たせるのが楽しみです。

ビジネス英会話 – 『snowed under てんてこ舞い 』

Hi there everyone,

I thought this expression was quite timely in that it is totally freezing outside and I have a lot of work to do!

Snowed under, as you probably guessed by now, means extremely busy. 

Example
“You up for a few rounds of golf this weekend Jim? “

“No can do I’m afraid, I’m totally snowed under with work at the moment.” 

Hope that comes in handy.

多分あなたの予想通り、これは「手が回らないほど忙しい」という意味です。

Things I miss

Hello again!

As a lot of you know, I have lived in Japan for some time now, about 17 years and there are plenty of things that I love about Japan but I still miss a lot of things about living in the UK. Here are some of the top few.

Bacon
Try as I might I just can’t seem to find two things that are essential to a big lad such as myself’s breakfast. British bacon and sausages are usually sold raw rather than smoked and they are totally delicious!

Free hospitals
Not free exactly but you never have to spend any cash when you go to the hospital and it doesn’t matter how long you stay!

TV
I have never managed to get into Japanese tv unfortunately and without trying to sound too horrible Japanese commercials bug me a bit. I used to love a lot of comedy shows on British TV, the documentaries are pretty good, and the adverts on the telly, as it is referred to back home, are sometimes downright hilarious. 

The Pub
One of the best things about the UK, I never get tired of going, they are very versatile serving good food, great beer, stuff for the kids to keep them amused and even dogs can go nowadays!

Supermarkets
My wife almost had tears in her eyes the first time I took her to one of the huge supermarkets in the city because she is a sucker for a bargain! With a  huge variety of food and other goods ranging from cheap and cheerful to luxury goods, supermarkets in the UK are a bit of a different experience from their Japanese counterparts. Last time I was there they had some new things like free fruit for the kids and even a bit of a Japanese section with natto and Kirin Beer albeit at astronomical prices. 

If you are ever in Britain, make sure to give some of these a try. Next time round I’ll be giving you a list of the things I don’t miss so much.

ジェイミー講師が恋しいもの…

今日もよろしくお願いします！

多くの皆さんがご存知の通り、私は日本に住んで約17年になります。日本には大好きな物がありますが、いまだにUKに住んでいた時のもので恋しいものが沢山あります。
その中で上位のものはこちらです。

Bacon（ベーコン）
どんなに頑張っても、私のような大男の朝食には必要不可欠な「2つの物」を見つけられる気がしません。イギリスのベーコンとソーセージは、通常スモークではなく生で売られていて、それらはとっても美味しいのです！

Free hospitals　(診察代無料の病院)
正確には無料ではないのですが、あなたは病院に行った時に一切支払いをする必要はありませんし、好きなだけ長くそこにいてもいいのです！

TV（テレビ番組）
あいにく私は、今までに日本のテレビ番組にハマったことはなく、恐ろしい日本のCMが私を少しイライラさせないようにと努力したこともありません。イギリスのテレビではコメディ番組が好きでしたし、ドキュメンタリーもとても良かったです。私の国ではテレビのCMはとても陽気な感じです。

The Pub（パブ）
UKで最高な物の一つ、パブ！私はパブ通いに疲れてしまうことは絶対にありません、パブは何にでも対応していて、美味しい食事、素晴らしいビール、子供向けに彼らが楽しめるものも提供しています。最近では、犬でさえパブに行けるんですよ！

Supermarkets（スーパーマーケット）
初めて街の巨大なスーパーマーケットに行った時、私の妻の目は殆ど涙であふれていました。なぜなら彼女は掘り出しものを見つけるのが大好きでたまらないからです。ものすごくバラエティに富んだ食料品とその他の商品がお手頃な物から高級品まで幅広く揃っているUKのスーパーマーケットでは、日本とは少し違った経験ができるでしょう。
最後に私がそこに行った時は、新しいこととして子供達に向けた無料のフルーツと、日本コーナーに納豆とキリンビールがありました、天文学的な値段で。

もしあなたがUKに行くことがあれば、絶対にこれらのうちのいくつかにトライしてみて下さい。次の機会に、私がそんなに恋しくないもののリストをあげることにしましょう！

Walking on thin ice

Hello again! Freezing isn’t it!

This is one of my favourite expressions, my mum used to say it to me on a daily basis and now I often get the chance to use it on my kids. 

Walking on thin ice means that you are very close to being in trouble for something. 

Example
This is the third time this week you’ve been late for work! You are skating on thin ice Mr Mastoris!

例

What we are doing in Kensington
Feedback

Hi there everyone and a very happy new year to you all!  I hope that this year turns out to be a bit better and more fruitful year than last.

We have many new ideas for this year, but I think the one that will directly relate to you most is how all of the team at Kensington are going to be giving each other feedback. From this year, teachers and staff in the school will be encouraged to give each other feedback on our work here at Kensington. This is intended to be constructive with a view to improving our classes/ teaching/ services and how the school is run in general. Any member of staff can give this to another regardless of whether they are kids teachers, adult teachers, staff, or management. All feedback needs to be actionable and with a view to improvement and we really hope it allows us to offer even better services to you! 

Looking forward to all the new ideas that come from this so watch this space!
