Ask for feedback

Hello again,

As you may have read in our news blogs recently one of the big themes for this year in Kensington is feedback. It has proved very useful amongst the staff and teachers alike and I think it is something we should be encouraging you all to do too.

If you are unsure of what you should be focusing on, not sure of your strong points, weak points, feel a little unconfident about your grammar or really just anything at all related to your English, why not ask your teacher at the beginning of the class to give you feedback at the end? Of course we will always do our utmost to give you general advice anyway but if you ask for feedback on a specific part of your language learning it is easier for our teachers to help you with what you need. Please feel free to ask for the same feedback from different teachers too. It is always nice to hear different opinions so the more the merrier.

講師とスタッフにとってこれはとても有益だと言うことは明らかで、私は皆さんにもぜひフィードバックして欲しいと思っています。

何を集中的にやればいいか明確になっていない、あなた自身の強みや弱みがわからない、文法に自信がない、あなたの英語に関するどんなことでも構いません。

レッスンの前に講師に言って下されば、レッスンの最後にフィードバックを行います。もちろん、私たちはいつでも最善のアドバイスを行っています。でももし、語学学習の中の特に気になる部分について尋ねて下されば、必要なフィードバックをより簡単に行うことができます。

どうぞお気軽に、同じ質問を色々な講師にしてみて下さい。
色々な意見を聞いてみることはいいことですし、大歓迎です！

Talk about myself/my hometown/my country
The Village People

It will probably come as a bit of a surprise to you because of my sophisticated urbane charm but I am actually from a very rural area and grew up in a village of only 300 people.

It has one shop, a petrol station, and two streets so you can imagine there isn’t much happening there.I know everyone there by their first names. It is a little inconvenient living there, the nearest supermarket is 16 kilometres away and so was my high school, the nearest pub is a 5k walk, and there isn’t a McDonald’s, Starbucks or clothes store in sight until you go to the nearest city Glasgow, which is about a 90 minute drive from my house or 3 hours on the train.

What it lacks in convenience though it makes up for in scenery, I had a view of the ocean from my back garden and a view of the hills from the front. It is super safe and was a great place to grow up. You can go to the beach, go camping, go fishing, go cycling, and do endless outdoor activities there in the summer and in the winter there is a ski slope just 30 mins away so it is great for that too.

I’m pretty used to life in the city nowadays and probably couldn’t go back to country life now but I think I’m pretty lucky to have grown up in such a beautiful, if slightly boring, place.

田舎で暮らす人々

私の洗練された都会的な魅力 (!) を知っている皆さんにはきっと驚きの事実かと思いますが、私は実はとても田舎の出身で、人口が300人しかいない村で育ちました。

その村には、1軒のお店とガソリンスタンド、2つの通りしかなく、ご想像の通り退屈な村です。
私は村の全ての住人の名字まで知っています。

そこで暮らすのは少し不便で、一番近くのスパーマーケットや私の学校までは16キロ、一番近くのパブまでは徒歩で5キロの距離があります。
マクドナルドやスターバックス、また、洋服店は一番近くの町であるグラスゴーまで行かないとありませんが、そこへは私の家から車で90分または電車で3時間の道のりです。

不便ではありますが、その代わり美しい風景の中にあります。
家の裏庭からは海、正面からは丘を眺められます。
とても安全で、子供が育つのに素晴らしい場所です。
夏には、ビーチ、キャンプ、釣り、サイクリング、など、いくらでもアウトドアが楽しめ、冬になれば30分ほどの場所にスキー場があります。夏も冬も素晴らしいのです。

最近では私はすっかり街での暮らしに慣れてしまったので、田舎暮らしに戻れないかもしれません。でもあんなに美しく、ちょっと退屈な場所で育ったことはとてもラッキーだっと思います。

Hi there everyone,

Since this weekend’s topic is about events, I’d like to show you a couple of ways to express enthusiasm namely “ can’t wait” and “looking forward to”

Example

There is a big boxing match this weekend. I can’t wait, I’ve been waiting to see this for ages.

I’m really looking forward to my summer holiday this year. I have two weeks off and we are heading to the south coast of Spain. It’s going to be amazing.

今週末のテーマはイベントなので、強い興味を表すための表現方法について
“ can’t wait” と“looking forward to” の2つを紹介したいと思います。

例

“ can’t wait”
There is a big boxing match this weekend. I can’t wait, I’ve been waiting to see this for ages.

(今週末、大きなボクシングの試合があります。楽しみで待ちきれません、ずっと観たいと思っていたんです。)

“looking forward to”
I’m really looking forward to my summer holiday this year. I have two weeks off and we are heading to the south coast of Spain. It’s going to be amazing.

What we are doing in Kensington
Triple Sec Meetings

Hello there everyone,

As you have heard in our previous blogs , we hold weekly teachers’ meetings in order to give each other feedback on our classes, give hints and tips, and generally try to improve our classes for you. What we also do every Friday is hold a secretary meeting to troubleshoot any issues that we may have and to try and improve our overall service. At the moment we are working on a secretary hotline to be better able to deal with zoom issues that arise from time to time. We think it is going to work out very well!

皆さんこんにちは。

既に以前のブログでお聞きの通り、ケンジントンでは週ごとに講師ミーティングを開き、レッスンについてのフィードバックやアドバイスを互いに交換し合い、皆さんへのレッスン内容を向上させようと努力しています。

更に、毎週金曜日に秘書ミーティングを設けて、想定される問題解決に取り組んだり、サービス向上に努めています。

現在は、しばしば起こるズームを利用したオンラインレッスン中の課題に、より素早く対応するためのホットラインづくりに取り組んでいます。

このシステムはきっと上手く機能するでしょう！

Your destination is the place where you’re going.

If you’re going to Takachiho ( Miyazaki), it is your destination.

Takachiho (Miyazaki) is one of the popular travel destinations in Miyazaki prefecture. I’m sure you know many popular travel destinations in Kyushu, don’t you?

Tell/inform the world about them.

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
What can I do in English so far?

In our study advice blog this week, let’s ask ourselves (me included) a question: What can I do in English/Japanese (so far)? Make a list of things we can do in English/Japanese. For example, I think I can 1. Introduce myself (my interests, work etc) 2. Describe my job 3. Give directions around town to a foreigner 4. Help a foreign customer/guest/patient at my shop/restaurant/hotel/hospital /clinic 5. understand about 60% of my favorite artiste’s best hits lyrics 6. Recommend good places to go sightseeing, shopping, dining and wining…in my town/region/country…

Please don’t worry if your list is kind of short (like mine for the things I can do in Japanese). The lengths of our lists will depend on several factors: Purpose of study, Level etc…

And don’t even think about the “other” list of things we can’t do yet. That will be for another day.

自分自身に尋ねてみて下さい（私もやってみます）。

今、英語（日本語）でできることはなんでしょうか？

英語（日本語）でできることをリストアップしてみましょう。

例えば、

1．自己紹介（興味があること、仕事など）

2．仕事の説明

3．外国人に街の道案内をする

4．お店やレストラン、ホテル、病院、クリニックで外国人のお客様や患者さんのお手伝いをする

5．大好きなアーティストのベストヒット曲の歌詞を60％理解する

6．あなたの街、地方、国で観光、買い物、食事やワインを楽しむところをお勧めする。

もしあなたのできることのリストが短くても気にしないで下さい（私が日本語でできることのリストの様に）

リストの長さはいくつかの要素によって変わります : 勉強の目的やレベルなど…
それに、まだできないことのリストに関してはまだ考えないでください。それは別の日にしましょう。

Hello there, how’re you spending your weekend?

There are many must-see or places that are worth a visit in Kyushu because of their natural beauty. I also happen to come from a country that is known for its natural beauty. One of the natural beauty features of my country Uganda is the Nile river. 6650 km long, it’s the longest river in the world. You can enjoy boating, fishing, swimming, kayaking, white water rafting and much more on the river Nile. The Nile is definitely one of the must-see wonders of Africa and the world.

Hello there, hope you’d a great and productive week at work. Any plans for the weekend? Well, not much for me. I’ll probably just chill at home.

Our everyday English expression is “worth a visit”

We use the expression “worth a visit” to suggest or recommend a good place to visit or to see.

If you go to Oita, Yufuin Onsen is definitely worth a visit. It’s one of the best hot springs in Kyushu and Japan.

Related expressions: worth a try, worth the effort/time/trouble…or not worth the trouble….

私は特に予定はなく、家でゆっくりすると思います。

さて、日常でよく使う英語の表現をご紹介します。

“worth a visit”

この表現は、訪れたり、見たりすることをお勧めする時に使います。

If you go to Oita, Yufuin Onsen is definitely worth a visit. It’s one of the best hot springs in Kyushu and Japan.

（もし大分に行くなら、湯布院は絶対に訪れるべきです。湯布院は九州、そして日本の中で最高の温泉のひとつです）

Related expressions : worth a try, worth the effort/time/trouble…or not worth the trouble….

関連表現： worth a try,（試してみる価値がある） worth the effort/time/trouble…（努力する、時間をかける、苦労するだけの価値がある）or not worth the trouble….（手間をかける価値はない、必要ない）

Hello there, it feels warmer in many parts of Kyushu, doesn’t it? Is spring perhaps coming soon in Kyushu? This week, in most of our classrooms, we’re going to talk about the amazing Kyushu.

Let’s be prepared to

talk about our travelling experiences in Kyushu (present perfect ….past)
talk about our travelling habits in Kyushu ( present tense)
talk about traveling wants/plans ( Future / I‘d like to)
Ask for suggestions with “should I / do you think I should / would you” and “What’s a good / What’s the best”
Give suggestions with “I think you should / you could / I’d / I think it’s worth”
Ask/Give Directions/info specific to Kyushu

On a practical note, you should be able make a short travel itinerary around Kyushu for a friend visiting Kyushu for the first time.

Please show and tell your teacher(s) and classmates the wonders of Kyushu in class.

九州の多くの地域では、だんだん暖かくなってきた様に感じませんか？春はもうすぐ九州にやって来るのでしょうか？

今週のレッスンでは、素晴らしい九州についてたくさん話す予定です。
準備をしておきましょう。

・九州での旅行経験について(現在完了形…過去形)

・九州での旅行の慣習について(現在形)

・旅行の予定、希望について(未来形、I‘d like to)

・“should I / do you think I should / would you” and “What’s a good / What’s the best”を使っておすすめを聞いてみる

・“I think you should / you could / I’d / I think it’s worth”を使って提案をする
