Goodbye Ross and Welcome to Denny

Hello there everyone,

As I’m sure you have heard by now Ross has sadly left our team and is moving to Osaka. Ross has only been with us for a couple of years and in that short time he has really helped us improve the quality of our lessons and has also been instrumental in some of the changes we have made over the last couple of years.  

We are happy to welcome Denny from Australia to our team. He comes highly recommended by Henry Sensei, has been working in Japan for quite some time now and is a very interesting gentleman with a broad range of interests and talents. Denny will be teaching in both the kids’ and adults’ schools so you will get a chance to meet him soon enough. Welcome to Kesnington Denny!

やあ皆さん、こんにちは

皆さんもうご存知だと思いますが…寂しいですが、ロス講師は大阪に引っ越しされるため、ケンジントンを去ることになりました。
ロス講師は数年に渡り、私たちと共にレッスンの質の向上を手助けをしてくれました。また最近数年間はずっと、私たちが2.3年前に作った教材の調整も行ってくれていました。

そして,私たちのチームはオーストラリアからデニーを迎えることができて幸せです。
彼はヘンリー講師の強い推薦でこのスクールにやって来ました。ずっと長い間日本で働いていて、幅広い興味関心と才能を持った面白い紳士です。
デニー講師は、キッズと大人の両方を教える予定なので、皆さんが彼に会うチャンスはすぐにやって来るでしょう。

In our bizspeak blog this week, we’ll stick to the movie theme and use the  movie related idiom “ cut to the chase” in a business setting.”Cut to the chase” means get straight to the main point of what you want to say/communicate without wasting time.  (In movies “the chase” is the most exciting scene)

Manager: Alright everybody, let’s start the meeting. And due to the limited time we have today, I’ll cut right to the chase.

The manager is letting the meeting attendees know that there won’t be time for small talk or pleasantries in today’s meeting.

Do you usually cut to the chase in your meetings or make small talk before you get to the meeting’s agenda?

How to make most of your lessons

Hello there, how’s your weekend going? Mine is kind of low key. I’m chilling at home.

In our Study Advice blog, I have two simple pieces of advice to you, our students and to myself (I’m studying Japanese).


  1.  When listening to your teacher, classmate, TV show etc don’t worry about not understanding everything. Try to guess meaning through context. 

      Rumi: Any plans for the weekend Saki?
      Saki: Hmm…not much. I’m gonna just chill at home.

      In this context chill means relax.

  1. Use the language(words, expressions) you know, to communicate. That way, you can think in the target language (English for you and Japanese for me). Your sentences may sound too simple at times, but that’s ok. You’ll sound more sophisticated as you learn more words and expressions.

やあみなさん、週末をいかがお過ごしでしょうか？
私はおとなしく、家でのんびりと過ごしています。

今回の英語の学習法のブログでは、あなたに、私たちの生徒さんに、そして私自身に向けて、シンプルな2つのアドバイスをしたいと思います（私は日本語の学習中です）。

1．講師やクラスメイト、テレビを聞いている時、全てを理解できなくても気にしないで下さい。文脈を通して意味を推測してみましょう。

Rumi: Any plans for the weekend Saki?
（サキ、週末は何か予定がある？）
Saki: Hmm…not much. I’m gonna just chill at home.
（うーん、特にない。家でただのんびりする予定。）

この文脈から、「Chill」はリラックスを意味するとわかります。

2．コミュニケーションを取るために、言語（単語や表現）を使いましょう。あなたの目的の言語（皆さんなら英語、私は日本語）で考えてみてください。
時にはあなたの文章はシンプル過ぎるように聞こえるかもしれませんが、それでもいいのです。あなたが単語や表現を学んで行くうちに、より洗練されていくはずです。

Talk about myself/my hometown/my country
 Cinema (movies) in my childhood 

Hi everyone, how’s your weekend shaping up?  No exciting plans as far as mine is concerned. I’m probably going to watch a movie or a drama on Netflix in the evening. I have no popcorn, though. 

Speaking of movies, when I was younger there weren’t many movie theaters in my hometown. And I guess the few movie theaters that were there, were partly owned by Indian businessmen. Not surprisingly, they showed lots of Bollywood movies there. Bollywood is India’s version of Hollywood. We watched both Hollywood and Bollywood movies in my hometown when I was a kid. I liked Bollywood movies because they had great music and dance in them. Nowadays, there are lots of movie theaters, but Bollywood has been replaced by Nollywood! “Nollywood” movies are made in Nigeria. They’re quite popular in many African countries. So nowadays when you go to the cinema in my hometown Kampala, you can watch Hollywood, Nollywood flix.

私の子供時代の映画

やあ皆さん、週末はいかがですか？私に関しては、特別楽しい予定はありません。たぶん映画を観に行くか、夜にネットフリックスでドラマを観るでしょう。ポップコーンは無いですが。

映画について言えば、私が若い頃、地元の街には映画館はたくさんはありませんでした。そしてそこにあったいくつかの映画館はインド人が経営していたと思います。そこで多くのボリウッド映画が上映されていたのも驚くべきことではありません。

ボリウッドとはインド版ハリウッドのことです。私は子供のころ、地元でハリウッドとボリウッドの映画を観ました。私はボリウッド映画が好きです、素晴らしい音楽とダンスが含まれているからです。最近、地元にはたくさんの映画館がありますが、ボリウッドは糊ウッドに変わってしまいました！ノリウッド映画とはナイジェリアで制作された映画のことです。アフリカの多くの国々で大人気なのです。もし近いうちに、あなたが私の地元カンパラへ行ったらハリウッドとノリウッド映画を観ることができますよ。

Hello there, another week has almost been shaved off the month and year. Hope things are shaping up well for you and your loved ones. In our Everyday English blog this week, we’re going to look at a movie related phrase or idiom: “run the show” which means to be in charge of a project, business, event etc

A: Who will be running the show at  Food Planet  while Yumi  and Moriko are on vacation next month?
B: Hmm… I’m not sure yet. Probably Morinosuke will be in charge.

Well, who’s running the show at Kensington Eikaiwa? You guessed right. Tim and Jaimie are running the show at Kensington Eikaiwa.

Hello everyone, how’s the going?

Have you seen any good movies lately? What movies would you like to see soon? Do you subscribe to Netflix, hulu, Amazon Prime or any other movie streaming services?

Our subject in most of the classes this week will be Films ( Movies).
As you prepare for the class, be ready to talk/share with your classmates and teachers about:
Films you’ve seen and want to see,  films and film genres you like and dislike and describe films (using a range of adjectives: touching, moving, exciting, boring…)
And ask and talk about your favourite films, actors, scenes, lines, and characters (using superlatives  the most entertaining, funniest…)
Amaze us with your film knowledge!

ビジネス英会話 – 「rapport」の使い方

There are many ways to describe relationships in English, and most of them are fine to use in a business setting. For example ‘I get on well with Adam from accounting’ is fine to say.

However if you wanted a more formal expression, then rapport is a good word to remember. Here are some examples:

‘We need to build a good rapport with that company as they’re a big player in the market’ 

‘I hope we’ve built up a good enough rapport over the years so that I can be honest with you right now…’

As you might be able to tell, it’s a noun which basically means relationship. We use it alongside build up to make an expression, like the two examples I made.

英語には関係性を表現する沢山の方法があり、それらの多くはビジネスシーンでも使われています。

例えば

‘I get on well with Adam from accounting’
(私は会計係のアダムとうまくやっている)と言うことができます。

でももしもっとフォーマルな方が良ければ、「rapport」という単語を覚えておくと良いでしょう。
いくつか例を挙げてみます。

‘We need to build a good rapport with that company as they’re a big player in the market’
（我々は市場で力を持っているあの会社と良い関係を築く必要がある）

‘I hope we’ve built up a good enough rapport over the years so that I can be honest with you right now…’
（私達は何年にも渡り良い関係を築いてきました、だからこそ正直に言いますが、、、）

基本的には「信頼関係」という意味居の名詞として使うことができ、例に挙げたように、「Built up」という表現と一緒に使います。

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Having fun

I started studying Japanese again last week as I took a break for a little while. I wasn’t enjoying it, it felt like a chore. I decided that I will try something different, so I started a new class and started playing a new video game in Japanese, now learning Japanese feels fun!

I know it sounds simple, and it is, but enjoying your studying is really important. Of course we hope you enjoy your lessons as much as we enjoy teaching them (which is a lot!), and if you can find extra things outside of that you enjoy (video games, books, music, movies, TV shows, YouTube, podcasts) then that will help a lot, too.

楽しく学ぶこと

少しの間お休みしていたのですが、先週から日本語の学習を再開しました。

実は以前は、それを義務の様に感じてしまい、楽しめていませんでした。そこで私は少し変えてみる事にしました。新しいレッスンと、新しい日本語のゲーム始めて、今は日本語を学ぶことを楽しんでいます！

これはとても単純なことに聞こえるでしょう、でも学習を楽しむことをはとても大切なことなのです。
もちろん、私たちが教えるのを楽しんでいる(とっても！)のと同様に、皆さんがレッスンを楽しんで下さることを願っています。さらにレッスン以外でも楽しめる何か(ゲーム、本、音楽、映画、テレビ番組、ユーチューブやポッドキャストなど)を見つけられたら、それはすごくいい手助けになるでしょう。

Talk about myself/my hometown/my country
Relationships where I’m from

When we meet new people there are a lot of factors that decide whether we might hit it off, such as common interests, personality and our mood at the time. But I think maybe the biggest thing in England, or at least for me, is our sense of humour.

Humour (making jokes and laughing) is a great way to get closer to people as it relaxes situations, and makes them more fun. It’s very common to make a joke with the local shop assistant in England, or say something funny now and then in a meeting to lighten the mood.

It’s something I miss about England as I think it’s quite different here, what do you think is important in Japan for making relationships? If you have an answer let us know in class.

新しい人と出会った時、一般的な興味やその時の気分や時間など、たくさんの要素を通して、私達は意気投合するかどうかが決まります。

ユーモア（冗談を言ったり、笑ったりすること）は人々をリラックスさせ、楽しませることで、より親しくなれる素晴らしい方法です。
イングランドでは地元のお店のスタッフと冗談を言い合ったり、会議の雰囲気を軽くするために何か面白いことを言うのはとても一般的です。

これは日本とはまったく違うことで、私が恋しく思うことのひとつです。
