What we are doing in Kensington
Junior High!

Hello everyone!

We have a new Junior High class in Kensington!
It’s a fantastic class that’s based on England’s national curriculum, which largely focuses on reading and creative writing at this level. Adjusted to ESL students, we have a big focus on conversation, creative writing projects, and cultural learning through books. We also tie in the subjects and themes of Japan’s national curriculum, in order to directly help the students with their Junior High English classes, and provide a more detailed and authentic look at those topics.

If you know anyone in Junior High looking to learn English, let us know!

“Touch Base” and “Reach Out”

Hey everyone, Denny here. Happy Monday!

Today’s two Business English phrases are “touch base” and “reach out”.

To “touch base” with someone means to get connected with them or build some kind of relationship. It’s often used in business fields as a way to create business networks.
To “reach out” is similar but contextually a little different – it’s usually used to establish a connection for the first time with someone.

So basically, “touch base” is a general connecting and relationship build up. “Reach out” is to establish a connection for the first time.

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Sharp Breath In!

Hey everyone, Denny here. Hope you’re having a great Sunday.
Today’s study advice is a method that I’ve learned from my studies in counseling and in neuroscience. People often think about how they can focus better when studying or doing something, and a way to get yourself into a focused mode is to learn to breathe in a certain way before you begin studying.
The trick is: take a sharp and fast breath in, then breathe out normally. Do this a few times. As you do it, you might notice you become more alert. Why?

Because when you do this, you trigger a “stress response”. Think about when you exercise: as you breathe in faster, you become more alert. It’s the same thing in studying. So if you want to focus, you can do this before you study to trigger alertness.

Once you want to relax, too, you breathe in normally, but breathe out slowly. This triggers a relaxation response.

本日の学習アドバイスでは、私が学習カウンセラーと脳(神経)科学から学んだメソッドをご紹介します。
人々は学習する際や何か物事を行う際、どうやったらもっと集中できるかを考える事があると思います。あなたをより集中した状態にする為には、勉強を始める前の呼吸について学ぶといいでしょう。
方法はこうです: 強く短く息を吸い、普通通りに吐く。これを数回行って下さい。おそらくより緊張感が高まった状態になっている事に気がつくでしょう。なぜでしょうか？

なぜなら、これを行う事でストレス反応を引き起こすからです。
エクササイズの時を考えてみて下さい。呼吸が早くなると、より集中した状態になるはずで、これは勉強においても同様です。
集中したい時は、勉強を始める前にこれを行って緊張感のある状態を引き起こして下さい。

リラックスしたい時には、普通通りに息を吸い、ゆっくりと吐いてください。これはリラックス反応を引き起こします。

Talk about myself/my hometown/my country
Writing as a passion

Hey everyone, Denny here, hope you’re all having a wonderful weekend.

One of my greatest (if not, my greatest!) passions in life is writing. This year, I’ve written over 50,000 words, in journals and on blogs. I write about many things, for example romance, love, psychology, philosophy, emotions, etc. These are all my interests, and I love to write about and expand on them in ways that help me understand them better. I also often write personal journals to collect my thoughts and understand what I’m thinking or feeling about things in my life.

Writing is a very healthy and powerful way for you to learn and understand things better. It teaches you how to think and how to structure your thoughts in a way that makes sense. I recommend it for self-help and also learning about the beauty of the English language. English is amazing for poetry, because it has over one million words, so expression is super flexible.

執筆作業への情熱

皆さんこんにちは、デニーです。
素敵な週末を過ごされていることを祈ります。

私がとても情熱を持っていること（1番とは言わないまでも）のひとつは執筆することです。今年のに入ってから既に、日記やブログで50.000以上を書きました。
色々なこと、例えばロマンス、愛、心理学や哲学や人生の感情などについて執筆します。これら全てに興味があり、より理解を深める方法として、執筆して知識を広げていくことが大好きです。
自分の考えをまとめたり、人生における考えや感情を理解するために、個人的な日記を書くこともよくあります。

執筆作業は、物事を学び、もっと理解するとても健やかで強力な方法です。理にかなった方法で、どの様に考え、思いを構築するべきかを教えてくれるでしょう。
自己啓発にも、英語の美しさについて学ぶ方法としてもおススメです。
英語の詩も素晴らしいです、なぜなら英語には100万以上の単語があり、表現はとてもフレキシブルだからです。

日常でつかえる英語表現 – 「もう少し詳しく説明して頂けますか？」

 “Could you expand on that for me?”

Happy Friday everyone, Denny here.

Today’s English phrase that can be applied every day and with a lot of practical use is “could you expand on that for me?”.
This phrase basically means you want more information. When in a conversation with someone, it is often the case that people speak with closed statements and questions.

For example: a closed question is “Was it a good day today?”. That’s a simple “Yes / No” question. By adding “Could you expand on that for me?” or “Tell me more”, you’re asking for more questions, and turning the conversation into an open, deeper one.

Similar phrases you can use could be “Why’s that?”, “Tell me more”, “How so?” etc. These are all a little different in context, but super handy!

ハッピーフライデー！デニーです。

本日は、日常的に使えてとても実用的なフレーズをご紹介します。
「could you expand on that for me?”」
このフレーズは基本的には、誰かとの会話する中で、選択型の質問など限られた会話の状態になった時などに、もっと情報が欲しい時に使います。

例：クローズ（選択型）質問「今日はいい一日でしたか？」- これはシンプルに「はい/いいえ」で答える質問です。

これに「Could you expand on that for me（もう少し詳しく説明して頂けますか）」や「Tell me more（もっと聞かせて下さい）」と付け加えることによって、あなたはより多くの質問ができ、より深く、オープン（自由型）な会話へと変えて行くことができます。
同様のフレーズで「 Why’s that?」「Tell me more」「How so?」なども使えます。
これらは正確に少し意味は異なりますが、とても便利なフレーズです！

Being Japanese

Hey everyone, Denny here. I hope you’re all having a great and productive week.

This week’s subject at Kensington is about “Being Japanese”, which carries a lot of complex and interesting questions. What does it mean to “be Japanese”? How does one be a “Japanese” person? Is it culture? Language? Tradition? There are a lot of interesting questions you can ask. You can also think about what it is about you being Japanese that you like, or even dislike! You can also compare to other cultures around you and think about what defines being Japanese, as opposed to being Australian, for example. I think this topic can be expanded upon a lot, and I’ll be interested in hearing your own thoughts about it all..in English, of course!

「日本人である」とは一体どういう意味なのでしょうか。
人はどうやって「日本人」になるのでしょうか？文化？言葉？伝統？
沢山の興味深い質問ができるでしょう。それに、日本人であることの好きな点や嫌いな点についても考えることもできます。

What we are doing in Kensington
A New Teacher Enters The Arena

Hi everyone, Denny here! The big guys at Kensington have been busy teaching me all there is to know about their wonderful workplace. I’m the newest teacher in Kensington and am looking forward to meeting with and teaching all of you lots of interesting English terms, phrases, vocabulary and other fun things. I’m really interested in a huge amount of things, especially philosophy, psychology and painting. I also wrote a pretty wild book about how we learn language, which was a fun goal. I follow principles of pursuing excellence and hold myself and people around me to very high standards, so I’m always striving to help others and myself improve in some way. This is something I learned from Aristotle, an ancient philosopher. I definitely recommend his books!

I hope to chat to you all and develop your English skills when I see you in class. Until then, I wish you the very best!

ケンジントンの大男達は私にこの素晴らしい職場について教えるのに忙しくしています。
私はケンジントンで最も新しい講師です。
皆さんにお会いして、たくさんの興味深い英語のテーマやフレーズ、ボキャブラリー、その他の面白い事などを教えるのを楽しみにしています。
私は本当にとても沢山の事に興味があるのですが、特に哲学、心理学、絵画に興味があります。それに、英語を学ぶ方法についてのとても愉快な本も書きました。それは楽しい目標でした。
私は卓越性を追求し、私自身や周囲の人々を高い水準に保つ様にことを原則としています。そのために常に何らかの方法で人の役に立ったり、自分自身の成長のために努力しています。これは古代の哲学者アリストテレスから学んだことです。ぜひ彼の本を読んでみて下さい！

“Sure, no problem. I should be finished up with everything by Tuesday, so how about lunch on Wednesday?”

例：

How to make the most of your lessons
Pair Work

Hello there everyone.

As you know in Kensington we always use pair work in class to maximise student to student speaking time and minimize teacher talking time.
Since you already know that you will be speaking with a partner, it may be a good idea for the small talk section to think about what you would like to ask to

  1. someone you are meeting for the first time
  2. someone who you regularly meet in class

and for the lesson itself you can consider extra follow up questions on the theme of the day. For example the topic for this weekend’s class is British Pubs so you could ask about..

  • favourite drinks/ bar food
  • bars that you like in Fukuoka
  • Why people go to bars and what you can do in a bar
  • Have you been to a British bar?
  • What did you order?
  • How was it? 

The list can go on and on. Basically the better prepared you are for your class the more you will get out of it and the more time you will have to enjoy talking with your partner rather than considering what to talk about next.

皆さんこんにちは。

ご存知の様に、ケンジントン英会話のレッスンではではいつもペアワークを行い、講師が話すだけの時間を減らし、生徒さん同士の会話時間をできるだきるだけ増やすようにしています。

パートナーと話すと事前にわかっているので、スモールトークの時間に以下の人達に向けての質問を考えておくのは良いアイデアです。

  1. a) 初対面の人
  2. b) いつもレッスンで会う人

そしてレッスンに向け、その日のテーマに関連する質問を追加で考えておきましょう。
例えば、今週末のテーマ「ブリティッシュパブ」に向けては質問するなら、、、

  • 好きなパブ・居酒屋の飲み物 / 食べ物は？
  • 福岡で好きなバー・居酒屋は？
  • なぜバー・居酒屋に行きますか？バー・居酒屋で何ができますか？
  • ブリティッシュパブに行ったことがありますか？
  • 何を頼みましたか？
  • それはどうでしたか？

このリストは延々と続けることができます。

基本的には、レッスンに向けてよく準備をすればするほど、次に何を話そうかと（その場で）考えるよりも早く考える時間から脱し、パートナーとの会話時間をより多く楽しむことができるでしょう。

The Changing Face of Mr Jaimie Wright

Hello there everyone, 

I know you will probably find this difficult to believe due to the hyper professional vibe I have, but it has taken me a long time to become any good at my job.

Tim and I have been running the school for 7 years now and he has always been very organised and paid attention to the smallest of details, but when we started I was the exact opposite, I’d forget to reply to line messages, forget about my private lessons in Nishijin, lose the keys to the school and more!  Organisation has never been my strong point! 

Nowadays though I make a very conscious effort to be as organised as possible, I set reminders for myself on every device I have, make a habit of checking everything I did the day before every morning, and double check my day’s work every night. 

I also had no idea of customer service in the beginning either and at our first school party some of the girls told me they thought I hated them because my line messages were really unfriendly! This was a real eye opener for me because I’ve always considered myself a pretty friendly person and I’ve realised that just joking around a bit in class just isn’t enough so nowadays my motto is “We aim to please!”

Basically to cut a long story short, working here has been a bit humbling. We have so many talented people on our team and in order to live up to their expectations I’ve really had to up my game in so many ways. I hope it’s working and I’m going to keep at it from here on in.

ジェイミーライト氏を変えたのは…!?

やぁ皆さん、こんにちは。

私のプロフェッショナルな雰囲気からは信じられないと思いますが(！)、うまく仕事ができるようになるまでには、長い時間がかかりました。

ティムと私はこのスクールを運営して7年になります。
ティムはいつも細部まで気を配り計画や実行をしています。

実はスクールを始めた時には、私はそんな彼とは真逆でした。LINEメッセージの返信を忘れたり、西新校でのプライベートレッスンを飛ばしてしまったり、学校の鍵を失くしたり、、、他にも色々！
計画、実行が私の「強み」になる事は決してないでしょう！

でも今では、できる限り計画的な人間になるように強く意識を持って努力しています。
持っているすべてのデバイスにリマインダーをセットして、毎朝前日に行った事をすべて確認する事と毎晩1日の仕事を確認することを習慣にしています。

それに最初の頃は、サービスについてもまったくわかっていませんでした。
初めてのスクールパーティーの時、数人の女の子達からすごく無愛想な私のLINEメッセージのせいで、私に嫌われていると思っていたと言われました!!
これには本当にハッとさせられました。
私は、常にとてもフレンドリーであろうと考えていましたが、レッスンの中に面白い事を言うだけではダメなんだと気づいたのです。
現在の私のモットーは、
「 We aim to please! – 喜んで頂けるように努めます 」。

話せば長くなりますが、手短に言うと、ここで働くことで少し謙虚な気持ちになりました。
私達のチームには沢山の才能ある人々がいます。彼らの期待に応えるためにも、私は本当に色々な方法で腕を上げないといけません。
うまく行くこと、これから先もずっと続くことを願っています。
