Confirm that you understand

Hello there everyone

I’m pretty sure that I mentioned in an earlier blog about the regular adult teaching team meetings we hold which are proving very useful not only in giving each other opinions on how to teach and feedback on the lessons, but also in seeing what is happening in the class and how we can improve our service in the classroom too.

One thing I have noticed during the classes is that students may have missed the opportunity to confirm whether they understood what a phrase they were being taught was, understood the grammar, or even knew what to do next in the class especially in level 1 classes. 

Please don’t be afraid to speak out and ask the teacher when you aren’t quite sure. 

I’m sorry, can you repeat that please?

Excuse me, I don’t understand. 

Is this right? 

Is my English correct?

Who is my partner?

Excuse me but I don’t know what to do.

Am I pronouncing this right? 

These are just a few of the things you can use in class when you aren’t sure. We will make a set of flashcards for them in the near future and let you know when it is ready so watch this space.

学習アドバイス / 最大限にレッスンを活かす
理解できるまで確認しよう

皆さんこんにちは。

以前のブログで、定期的に大人のレッスンの講義内容に関してのチームミーティングを設けていることに触れました。そこではどうやって教え、フィードバックを貰うかについて意見を出し合うだけでなく、レッスンの中で起こったことを見て、どうやって私たちのサービスを向上させるかについても有益なミーテイングとなっています。

レッスンの中でひとつ気づいた事があります。特にレベル１のクラスでは、生徒さん達は教わったフレーズや文法、レッスンの中で次に行うことでさえも、理解できたかどうかの確認ができていないことがあったかもしれません。

よくわからないことがある時には、どうか恐れずに発言して、講師に質問して下さい。

I’m sorry, can you repeat that please?
（すみません、今のフレーズをもう一度言ってもらえますか？）

Excuse me, I don’t understand.
（すみません、よくわかりません。）

Is this right?
（これで合っていますか？）

Is my English correct?
（私の英語は正しいですか？）

Who is my partner?
（私のパートナーは誰ですか？）

Excuse me but I don’t know what to do.
（すみません、何をやればいいかわかりません。）

Am I pronouncing this right?
（私の発音は合っていますか？）

これらは、もしレッスン中によくわからない事があった時に使えるほんのいくつかの例です。
近いうちにこれらをフラッシュカードにもセットする予定なので、準備ができたらここでお知らせします。

Talk about myself/my hometown/my country
Things I don’t miss

Hello there everyone,

In one of my previous blogs I gave you a list of some of the things that I think make the UK a great place to be. Today I tried to come up with a list of the not so great but I’m actually having trouble finding much to say. Here are a few though.

Weather
I really can’t stand the weather in Britain to be honest. It’s usually chilly, rains way too much for my liking, and it’s difficult to plan anything outdoors because the rain can come on suddenly even on the sunniest of days, something that if you are a tennis fan will have seen happening endlessly at Wimbledon. 

Bad Public Transport
Unlike in Japan, where public transport is so punctual you could set your watch to it, the UK bus and train companies have yet to master the art of being on time and in the countryside where I’m from the train is often up to 30 minutes to an hour late.

Football
I’m sure I’ll probably not be allowed back into the country after saying this but football in the UK is a bit too popular. It’s always on tv, in the newspapers, and on social networks, and is talked about constantly at work, in the pub and even at home. Not liking football or supporting a team is seen as a bit weird and geeky for boys but in all honesty I was already tired of it by the time I was 12. 

Of course no country is perfect and there are a few more things I can think of, but all in all I’d say the UK is a pretty nice place to be from, and there is much more to miss than not too.

私の出身地、私自身～講師の自己紹介
私が恋しくないものは…

皆さんこんにちは。
前回のブログで、私はUKが素晴らしい場所だと感じて貰えるようないくつかの事をリストにして皆さんにご紹介しました。

そこで今日は、あまり良くないと思う事のリストを考えてみました、でも実は、沢山見つけるのは難しかったので、ほんのいくつかですが。

「天候」
正直に言って、英国の天候は本当に耐えられません。
いつも肌寒くて、私の好みよりも雨が多過ぎます。アウトドアでの予定を立てるのは難しい、なぜならすごく天気の良い日々が続いていても、急に雨になることもあるからです。
もしあなたがテニスのファンなら、こういったことを、ウインブルドンでを観たことがあるでしょう。

「不便な公共交通機関」
日本では公共交通機関はあなたが時計をセットできる位にとても時間厳守ですが、ＵＫでは全く違います。バスと電車会社はいまだに時間通りに運行する技術を習得していませんし、私の出身の地方ではよく30分～1時間遅延します。

「サッカー」
私が国に戻ったら、たぶんこんなことを言うことは許されず、UKではサッカーはとても人気だと分かっています。
テレビや新聞、SNSでは常にサッカーを扱っていて、職場でもパブでも、家でさえずっとその話です。男の子にとって、サッカーが好きでなかったり、チームをサポートしていなかったりする人はちょっと変わった人か、オタクだと思われます。でも正直に言うと、私は12歳になるまでに既にもう疲れてしまっていました。

もちろん、完璧な国などありませんし、もう少しいくつか考え出すこともできます。でも概してUKはすごく良い出身国であり、恋しい物の方がそうでない物よりも多いです。

Everyday English
pulling someone’s leg

Hello there everyone,

Since we are going to be expressing opinions this weekend, here is a phrase we can use when we find what someone is telling us to be either a joke or so unlikely that it must not be true. 

Example
“If you ask me, Hotto Motto has the most delicious food in all of Japan.”

“What!?” 

“You are pulling my leg aren’t you?”

“No, their chicken nanban is absolutely exquisite.”

As you can see in the example above speaker two has trouble believing what he is being told and thinks it’s a joke, only to be informed otherwise.

Hope that comes in handy.

日常で使える英語表現
pulling someone’s legの意味は？

皆さんこんにちは。

今週末のトピックは『意見を述べる』なので、ここでは『冗談や、実際に起こりそうもないことを言われた時』に使える表現を紹介します。

例
“If you ask me, Hotto Motto has the most delicious food in all of Japan.”

（私に言わせれば、ほっともっとが日本でもっとも美味しい食べ物だね）

“What!?” 

（えっ、何言ってるの !?）
“You are pulling my leg aren’t you?”

（からかってるの？）

“No, their chicken nanban is absolutely exquisite.”

（違うんだ、チキン南蛮はすごくイケてるんだよ）

上の例の様に、2番目の話し手はただ言われただけではその内容を信じられず、冗談だと思っていましたね。
