Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Don’t Aim For Perfect

Heya, Denny here. Happy Sunday.

Something that I notice many people do in all walks of life is that they try to get everything done perfectly and get really frustrated about making mistakes. Yesterday’s post was about me learning from my painting mistakes, and that’s the same mindset you need in language, too.

Sometimes, when people are trying to speak English, they freeze and don’t speak at all. I can tell by their eye movements that they’re thinking about how to say something perfectly, with perfect grammar.

Here’s the best study advice for everything: just say it! Looking for the perfect grammatical structure reduces your talking time. If you talk less, you don’t practice as much, which means you don’t progress as fast.

Language is modular in the way we learn it. It’s not math where 1+1 always = 2. You can nail it every time in math, but in language learning you need to actively speak and make lots of mistakes, so you can learn to self-correct. Trust me!

多くの人々が、人生を歩む上で全ての物事を完璧に行い、ミスする事をとてもストレスに感じていると思います。

昨日の投稿で、私は絵を描きミスをする事から学んでいると述べました。皆さんの語学学習においても同じ考え方が必要です。
人々が英語を話そうとする時、凍りついてしまって全く話せなくなってしまう事があります。彼らの目の動きから、彼らが正しい文法を使って完璧に話すためにどうしたらいいか考えているのが伝わってきます。

全てにおいて、1番いい学習アドバイスは、とにかく口に出す事！完璧な文法を組立てる事は、話す時間を減らしてしまいます。もし話す事が減り十分な練習ができなければ、早く上達できません。

語学はそれを学んで行く中で、構築して行くものです。
1+1の答えがいつも2になる、数学とは違うのです。数学では毎回完全な答えを導くことができても、語学学習では、積極的に話し、沢山ミスをする必要があるのです。
そうやって自己修正することができるのです。

Successful Painting Mistakes!

Heya, Denny here.

I’m a very ambitious person as some of my students have learned. I do a lot of different things, but mainly I do a lot of painting.

Recently, I’ve been painting on my tablet almost every day, practicing and trying different things. The ones I show are the successful ones, but many times I actually throw out some paintings because they turn out no good. Many of them “fail”.

The thing is, a lot of these failures led to big improvements, because I learned about the mistake and how to not do it. The interesting thing about developing any skill is that failing and making mistakes is actually where we learn the most. If you’re always winning, you’re not learning – you’re just winning!

Take this in with your English study, too. You’re going to make a lot of mistakes and fail some sentences, but those are the things you build from the most!

やあみんな、デニーです！

数人の生徒さんにとって、私はとてもアンビシャスな人間です。私は色々な事をやっていますが、一番多く行っているのは、絵を描く事です。

最近ではほぼ毎日タブレットで絵を描き、違った内容に挑戦して練習しています。お見せしたのはうまくできた物ですが、実際には何回も、良くない物は捨ててしまいました。それらの多くは「失敗作」だったのです。

でも実は、沢山の失敗が大きな成長に繋がっています。なぜならミスから多くのこと、失敗しない為にはどうするべきかを学ぶからです。
スキルを身につける事の興味深い点は、失敗や間違いからこそ多くを学べるという事です。
もしあなたが常に勝利していたら、あなたはただ勝っているだけで、そこから学ぶ事はないでしょう！

皆さんの英語学習にもこの事を活かして下さい。沢山間違い、文章で失敗してより多くを身に付けて行きましょう！

The Open Question

Heya, Denny here.

In language, there are two specific types of questions that you can ask: open and closed questions.

A closed question is usually what most people ask when speaking and learning English for the first time – for example, “How are you today?” or “Do you like ~?”. The problem with these questions though is that they are “closed” from expansion. The answer is direct and absolute, so it “closes” conversation.

An open question is more difficult to do, but usually it’s something that makes people think. For example, instead of “Do you like ~?”, you can ask “What kind of foods do you enjoy eating?”. That’s a more complex sentence and question, but it is general and allows you to listen in on various areas of interest which you can then ask about, too.

Conversation is actually a skill, which is a good thing because it means you can always improve!

「オープンクエスチョン 自由型質問」とは

やあみんな、デニーです！

あなたが質問をする時、言語には、「オープンクエスチョンとクローズドクエスチョン」という、2つのタイプの質問形式があります。

通常殆どの人が、最初に英語を学び、話す時にはクローズドクエスチョンを使います。

例えば、 “How are you today?” or “Do you like ~?”. の様に。
ただし、これらの質問の問題点としては、話しの展開が「閉じられている（広がらない）」ことです。これらに対する返答は直接的で断言的なため、「閉ざされた」会話と呼ばれるのです。

オープンクエスチョンは、より難しいです。
しかし通常、オープンクエスチョンでは人々に何かを考えさせることができます。例えば “Do you like ~?”の代わりに、 “What kind of foods do you enjoy eating?”と尋ねることができます。これは文章や質問をより複雑にしますが、一般的で、様々な分野について聞くことができ、その後にまた質問を続けることができます。

会話は良いスキルです、つまり皆さんは常に上達することができるのです。

Hi everyone, Denny here.

Do you play sports? Do you watch them? Are there any famous people you really admire in the sporting world?

I’m not really a sports guy, even though I definitely look like I am. I enjoy practicing boxing, and when I lived in Asakura I was cycling all the time, but especially when I was younger, I hardly played any sports! Watching them is sometimes okay, and I enjoy watching Novak Djokovic – a famous Serbian tennis player – play tennis. He’s got one hell of a reach and can leap from one side of the court to the other, so he’s a lot of fun. There are a lot of really fun boxers to check out too!

In Australia, the most popular sports are rugby and tennis. Most people know about the Australian rugby team. I don’t watch it, but rugby is incredibly hard and tough as a sport. Think about what sports you like to play, watch and learn about, and ask yourself if you have any sports goals, too!

皆さんはスポーツをしますか？スポーツ観戦をしますか？スポーツ界で大好きな有名人はいますか？

私はすごくスポーツマンに見えますが、実際はそうでもありません。ボクシングの練習を楽しみ、朝倉に住んでいた間はいつもサイクリングをしていましたが、特に若い頃はスポーツは全くしませんでした！

でも時には、スポーツ観戦をするのもいいですね。私はセルビアの有名なテニスプレイヤー、ノバク・ジョコビッチのテニスを楽しむことがあります。彼はどんな距離でも手が届き、コート端から端へ飛び移ることができるので、とても面白いです。注目すべき楽しいボクサーも沢山います。

オーストラリアで最も人気があるスポーツは、ラグビーとテニスです。殆どの人はオーストラリアのラグビーチームを知っています。私はラグビーを観ませんが、ラグビーはとても辛く厳しいスポーツです。

あなたがプレイしたい、観戦したい、学びたいスポーツについて考えてみましょう、そして、何かスポーツに関する目標があるかどうか、自分自身についても考えてみましょう！

Hey everyone, Denny here!
At Kensington, a major goal for us is to maximize your time in speaking English, so we work very hard to try and get you speaking as much as possible, while we work on helping you correct any errors made and asking the right questions.

Language is learned through use, and a very tricky skill that we’re always working on improving is our ability to get you to speak. Hopefully, you’re noticing it in class, too!

Not in the same League

Not in the same league means nowhere near in terms of ability. For example Barcelona and Avispa Fukuoka are not in the same league. (Barcelona is probably much much better. )

Ex. I gave it my best, but I just couldn’t even make him break a sweat. Jaimie and I are not in the same league at kick boxing.

Not in the same leagueは、という意味です。

例えばバルセロナとアビスパ福岡では格が違うのです。
（恐らくバルセロナがずっと良いでしょう…）

例：
I gave it my best, but I just couldn’t even make him break a sweat. Jaimie and I are not in the same league at kick boxing.
（私はベストを尽くしたけれど、彼に汗をかかせる事すらできなかった。キックボクシングでは、ジェイミーと私では格が違うのです。）

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Fix the lesson time and day

Many times building routines is very useful, especially when one is busy fixing the lesson times and days so you can arrange your schedule around them is a great way to ensure that you both take your classes and also continue improving your English.

My schedule can sometimes get very busy and it’s really totally dependent on student reservations and any other work that pops up. I’m sure that if I hadn’t fixed the days I go to the gym I would never be able to get there. But I have, I go to the gym every Monday and Friday at 16:00 and I won’t change these appointments for almost anything. 

Same for studying Japanese, I will study Japanese from 7am to 7:30 and I will do that almost regardless of how busy I am. Deciding the day/time to take your classes and/or study is super beneficial, please give it a try if you have trouble finding time to study or take your classes!

レッスン日時を固定する事のメリット

多くの時間をルーティン化する事はとても便利です。

特に、忙しい時期にレッスンの日時とその前後のスケジュールを組んでおく事は、レッスンを確実に受講し、英語の上達にも繋げるすばらしい方法です。

生徒さんのご予約やその他の仕事次第で、私のスケジュールはとても忙しくなる事があります。
もしジムに行く日時を先に固定していなかったら、決して行くことはできないでしょう。でも私は毎週月曜と金曜の16時にジムに行く予定を固定していて、ほとんどの場合はその予約を変更する事はありません。
日本語の学習も同様で、どんなに忙しくても大体、午前7時から7時半まで勉強します。

レッスンや勉強の日時を決める事は、とても意義があります。
もしあなたがレッスンを受講する時間を取るのが難しい場合は、ぜひ試してみて下さい。

My trip to Ojikajima

The first few months of the year were especially busy for me so my family and I eagerly awaited our Golden week holidays during which we went to a beautiful island in Nagasaki called Ojikajima. 

We spent 5 days there in a renovated very old traditional Japanese house. The house had been wonderfully renovated to both respect its history but also include all the modern comforts travellers seek nowadays and it was the main attraction of our trip. 

During those five days, I would wake up very early in the morning as I usually do, enjoy a few cups of coffee while reading some of the books I’d brought and then go shopping in the small town nearby and buy groceries for breakfast. I would enjoy cooking for my family and then exploring the island which had a few stunning views.

Ojikajima is a very little known island in Fukuoka and I hope that changes and more people visit there cause it’s certainly worth a visit. As for ourselves, we’ve already booked our next trip there in July!!

今年のはじめの数ヶ月はとても忙しかったので、私と家族はゴールデンウィークの休暇を本当に待ち望んでいて、長崎にある小値賀島と呼ばれる美しい島を訪れました。

私達はリノベーションしたとても古く伝統的な日本家屋で５日間を過ごしました。
その歴史へのリスペクトと最近の旅行客が求める現代的な快適さを合わせ持つ、美しくリノベーションされたその家が、この旅行の大きな魅力でした。

５日間の間、私はいつも通りとても早く起きて持参した数冊の本を読みながらコーヒーを楽しみ、その後近くの小さな町へ朝食の食材を買い行きました。私は家族の為の料理を楽しみ、それからいくつかの絶景のあるこの島を探検しました。

小値賀島は福岡ではあまり知られていませが、本当に行く価値があるので、もっと多くの人々が訪れてみて欲しいと願っています。
私達はすでに次の7月に予約済みです！

what’s something or someone like

I’d like to introduce you to a very useful expression to use when you want to ask for more information about something. It’s “What’s …. like?”.

For example if you found out that your sister has a new boyfriend you may want to ask
Ex. What’s he like?
And it means “What kind of person is he?”

If you heard that your mother had been to Glastonbury you would probably want to ask
Ex. What was it like?

And it means “How was it? / What happened there”

We can also use this expression in our classes on “Food” this weekend in Kensington.

もっと詳しい情報を知りたい時に使える、とても便利な表現を紹介したいと思います。
それは、“What’s …. like?”.

例えば、あなたのお姉さんや妹に新しい彼氏ができたのを知った時、あなたはきっと質問したくなるでしょう。

例

これは、「彼はどんなタイプの人なの？」という意味です。

もしあなたの母親がグラントンバリーに行ったことがあれば、あなたはきっと質問したくなるでしょう。
例
What was it like?
これは、「そこはどうでした？や、そこでどんな事がありましたか？」という意味です。

Food

This weekend you’ll have the chance to experience history, Kensington history that is. Food is the first Kensington class ever made. I made it about 8 years ago when I was teaching at a company near my house. I had prepared all the material myself which was really hard and stressful work but it resulted in the idea for making classes as we do them in Kensington so it all paid off really well I’d say.

We’ll be talking about typical foods in different countries, different ways of cooking and different tastes, and also how we like food served and paired. Pretty interesting stuff!

これは8年前、私が家の近くの英会話スクールで教えていた時に作ったものです。
私はすべての教材を自分自身で用意していましたが、それはとても大変でストレスのたまる仕事でした。
でも結果的に、そのアイデアの中からケンジントンで行うレッスンが生まれたので、全て報われたと思います。

レッスンでは、異なる国々の典型的な食べ物や調理法、味、どの様な組み合わせで提供されるのが好きかなどについて話しましょう。
