“Fat chance” and “catch a break”

Hello everyone, did you have a blessed weekend?

Our Bizspeak expressions this week are “Fat chance” and Catch a break”
Fat Chance actually doesn’t mean a good chance of something happening. It means there’s very little or no chance at all of something happening. For example,  Fat chance of getting a seat on the morning train in Tokyo.

A:  Hey Ryunosuke, do you think we’ll get the Kensington IT system set up contract?
B: Fat chance of that, TKK technologies got it yesterday. 

“Catch a break” or get lucky break  means get lucky or to have a chance/an opportunity that improves your business or life situation dramatically.

A: Hey Ryonosuke, do you think we’ll get the Kensingston IT system set up contract?
B: Hmm… Fat chance of that. TKK technologies got it yesterday.
A: Oh no!  We haven’t signed any deals in the last few months,  It seems we just  can’t catch a break!

今週のビジネス英会話の表現は、 “Fat chance” and Catch a break”です。
“Fat chance” とは、何かが起こる良いチャンスのことではありません。これは、ほとんど、または全くチャンスが無いことを意味します。
例えば、 Fat chance of getting a seat on the morning train in Tokyo（東京では、朝電車で座れるチャンスは殆どない）のように。

A:  Hey Ryunosuke, do you think we’ll get the Kensington IT system set up contract?
　やあ、りゅうのすけ、ケンジントンのITシステムは契約できると思うかい？

B: Fat chance of that, TKK technologies got it yesterday.
　無理だと思うよ。TKKテクノロジーズが、昨日契約してしまったんだ。

“Catch a break” や get lucky breakは、ビジネスや生活の中でドラマティックにラッキーなことがあったり、良いチャンスを得るという意味です。

A: Hey Ryonosuke, do you think we’ll get the Kensingston IT system set up contract?
　やあ、りゅうのすけ、ケンジントンのITシステムは契約できると思うかい？

B: Hmm… Fat chance of that. TKK technologies got it yesterday.
　うーん、む無理だと思うよ。TKKテクノロジーズが、昨日契約してしまったんだ。

A: Oh no!  We haven’t signed any deals in the last few months,  It seems we just  can’t catch a break!
　そんな！この数ヵ月、どんな内容でもサインできなかったのに。私達にはチャンスがなかったんだね。

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Reading for pleasure

Many students of foreign languages tend to stick too much to textbooks or study material. I think it’s a good idea to take a break from the textbooks and pick up, for example, a comic book and read it for fun/pleasure. When I was studying French, I used to enjoy reading comic series like  Les aventures de Tintin (Adventures of Tintin), Asterix le Gaulois etc . I had fun reading them and they helped me expand my vocabulary and expressions’ base.
Do you read any English publications (comics,novels, tracts, blogs etc) for pleasure?

楽しみながら英語を読んでみよう

外国語を学ぶ多くの生徒さんは、教科書や学習教材を使った学習にこだわり過ぎていると思います。教科書を勉強する合間に、例えば楽しくマンガを読んだりして休憩するのもいいアイデアだと思います。
私がフランス語を学んでいた時、Les aventures de Tintin (タンタンの冒険)、Asterix le Gaulois (アステリックスの冒険) などのマンガを読んでいました。それらを読んで楽しみながら、ボキャブラリーや基本的な表現を広げることもできました。
皆さんは、マンガ、小説、小冊子、ブログなど、何か英語の出版物を読んで楽しんでいますか？

Talk about myself/my hometown/my country
Good/bad luck superstition(s) in my culture

Hello there, how’s your weekend going? Any big plans? 

Just like any other country or culture, in my home country Uganda there are many good and bad luck superstitions,
for example,
It’s a sign of good luck if your right hand palm itches. Many people believe that if your right hand palm itches you’ll receive money. However, if your left one itches, it’s a sign that you’ll spend a large sum of money in the near future.

In fact, my right hand palm usually itches a few days before payday! So, I  kind of believe it, ha ha ha.

You have some good or bad luck beliefs, don’t you? Please tell us about them in class.

皆さんこんにちは。週末いかがお過ごしでしょうか？何か特別な予定はありますか？

他のどんな外国や文化と同様に、私の出身地ウガンダでも幸運や不運の迷信があります。
例えば、
もしあなたの右手の手のひらがかゆくなたら、それは幸運の印です。もしあなたの右の手のひらがかゆくなったなら、収入があると多くの人々が信じています。
しかし、もしあなたの左手のひらがかゆくなったなら、実はそれは近い将来に莫大な出費をする印です。
実際に、私は普段、給料日の数日前に右手がかゆくなるのです！だから私はこの迷信を少し信じていますよ、ハハハ。

あなたも何か良いことや悪いことの迷信を信じていますよね？レッスンでそのことについて教えて下さい。

Sticking to this week’s theme-luck, our everyday English expression this week is “keeping one’s fingers crossed” It means praying or wishing for good luck or a good outcome.

A: Moriko, I heard that your son is going to take the Law school entrance exam.
B: Yes, his dad and I are keeping our fingers crossed that he passes this time. He couldn’t pass last year.

Hello everyone, how’s your week going at work, home and anywhere you may be? Hope things are going well and luck is on your side. Speaking of luck, this week’s topic  in most of our classes is Luck.
