Hello again!
Today’s wonderful business English phrase is “shoot down” which means to reject an idea or proposal. 

Example

“ I’m really getting annoyed with Dave. Every idea I put out at the meetings he shoots it down without even thinking. I’m starting to think he has something against me.”

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Come prepared

 I think that one thing we don’t convey very clearly to our students is that the flashcards we use for preparation are meant to be not only for study but to prepare you for what we are going to talk about in class especially for levels 2 and 3 but also for level 1 students too. Memorising new words and phrases is of course great but you should probably be thinking about what you are going to talk about in class and how you are going to say it. In this way you’ll be looking for the right words or suitable expressions to use on the day and will be expanding your vocabulary and knowledge at the same time. I often see on class day that people have studied the cards and know what language to use but haven’t given much thought to a relevant situation or story that they can use with their partner. 

So the advice for today is simple, don’t just memorise but also try to imagine what you are going to talk about and how. It will improve your studies and also make your class more fun!

レッスンの準備をしよう！

私達が生徒さんに明確にお伝えしていないなと思うことのひとつは、準備で使う「フラッシュカード」は、勉強のためだけでなく、特にレベル２、レベル３、そしてレベル1の生徒さんにも、レッスンの中話すための予習になるということです。
新しい単語やフレーズを記憶することはもちろん素晴らしいことです。しかし、あなたはレッスンで何を、どうやって話すかについて考えておくべきです。

そうすれば、皆さんはその日使う正しい単語や的確な表現を探し、同時にボキャブラリーや知識を増やすことができるでしょう。

レッスンでは、フラッシュカードを勉強し、どの言葉を使うかは知っているけれど、パートナーと一緒にトークで使える、関連のシチュエーションやストーリーについてはあまり考えていない人を良く見かけます。
そこで、今日のシンプルなアドバイスとしては、ただ覚えるのではなく、何をどのように話すのかを想像してみて下さい。これは、あなたの勉強を上達させるだけでなく、レッスンを更に楽しくしてくれますよ！

Making the most of it.

Making the most of it.

There’s been a lot of unpleasant news the last couple of years and as you know, I like to complain a lot but I have to say that some of what has been going on has probably changed my life for the better. Before the pandemic came along I couldn’t stand spending time in the house but over the last couple of years I have finally learned some patience and can now spend time at home without tearing my hair out. Spending more time at home has enabled me to start doing something that I love again, which is reading. I used to be an avid reader but with distractions like the pub, having  two young children, and work and the pub again,  I don’t think I touched a book for about 10 years. That all changed last year and I have been able to get through a book every couple of months or so and I have to say my brain seems to have magically come back to life! If you are a bit of a science fiction fan such as myself I can recommend a great book called “The Three Body Problem” which I read last year.  It was an easy read, very imaginative, and I will probably reread it sometime in the near future. 

The other positive thing that this last couple of years has had is my kids’ English. I spend much more time working from home now and especially last year in spring their English ability started going through the roof due to my strict English only policy in the house.

In English we have a saying that “Every dark cloud has a silver lining”so even though it’s been a rough couple of years in many ways I think I’ve managed to make some good out of it and I hope you have too!

“どんなに困難な状況でも何か良いことがある”

皆さんご存知のように、ここ数年は良くないニュースで溢れていました。不満は沢山ありますが、私の生活の中でいくつかは、より良く変化していると言わざるを得ません。
コロナ禍がやって来る前は、家で時間を過ごすことが我慢できなかったのですが、ここ数年を経て、ついに頭を抱えることなく、家で過ごすことを学びました。
家でより多くの時間を過ごすことは、私の好きな事、読書を再開する事を可能にしました。
私はかつて熱心な読書家でした。しかし、例えばパブや2人の子供を持った事、仕事そして更にパブ、といった気晴らしで約10年は本に触れていなかった様に思います。

昨年、全てが変わり、毎月本を読むことが可能になりました。私の脳も奇跡的に息を吹き返していると言わなくてはいけません！
もしあなたが私と同様に、SFのファンなら、昨年読んだ本の中から「The Three Body Problem – 三体- 」という、素晴らしい本をオススメします。
とても読みやすく、想像的な内容で、私はおそらく近いうちに読み返すと思います。

他に良かったことは、この2年での私の子供達の英語です。家で仕事をする時間が増えた今、特に昨年の春、家では英語を使用するという私の厳しいルールのおかげで、彼らの英語能力は飛躍的に向上しました。

英語には、“Every dark cloud has a silver lining　どんなに困難な状況でも何か良いことがある”という言葉があります。色々と大変だった2年間ですが、そんな中でもいくつかは良いことを生み出せたと思っていますし、皆さんもそうであって欲しいと思っています！

a-stick in the mud 

This weekend’s topic at our classrooms around Fukuoka City is “ Describing Character” so I thought I’d give you a commonly used phrase to describe a person who views others as being a bit dull or boring such as myself!

“a stick in the mud”

Have you ever met Jaimie?

Yes, he’s a real stick in the mud isn’t he? He never comes to any of the school parties and won’t come for a drink after work with us.

This week’s subject 
Describe Character

Hello everyone, this weekend at our Akasaka, Nishijin, Yakuin, and online classes the topic is describing character. We will be using a lot of adjectives to talk about ourselves and the people around us. We will also be discussing what kind of people we like and dislike and what traits we think are necessary to be successful in various aspects of work, study and more!
