The Western World is Direct

One of the biggest differences between business in English and business in Japanese is the communication style. Western business people tend to be a lot more direct in their approach and say things straight, while Japanese businesses tend to be the opposite and more conservative.

I’m not experienced in business, so I can’t say much on it, but I do think both methods have some merit in their approach. That said, for Japanese student’s it’s important to remember that Westerners being direct probably doesn’t mean they’re being aggressive…it’s just their nature!

私はビジネスの経験がないので言えることは少ないですが、どちらの方法にもメリットがあると思います。
とは言うものの、日本人生徒にとって、西洋人が率直であることはおそらく彼らが攻撃的であることを意味するのではないことを覚えておくことは重要です…それはただ彼らの性質なのです！

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Writing structure lessons

Write, write often, and learn how to structure your writing in a way that is logical in English.

What do I mean? Well, for starters – when you learn to write well, you learn to structure language in your mind much clearer. Speaking it takes time because speaking is a different skill – you know the words, but fluently saying them is a muscular and sound movement. You’ll know it though, it just takes practice.

Learning to structure your writing however has huge benefits – even if you’re writing basic 30 word sentences or journals, you’re learning how the words connect to each other and how you can improve it with good feedback – something many of us can do and I can definitely do because of my writing experience.

Now that you understand, you can look at this blog post and look at its structure – There’s a beginning intro explaining what it is, the middle is an explanation, and next, a conclusion.

So there you have it – the basics of decent structure! If you want to learn more…well, we can probably offer some kind of services for it 😊

さて、手始めに、あなたが上手く文章を書くことを学ぶとき、心の中で言語をより明確に構造化することを学ぶでしょう。
話すことは別のスキルであるため、話すには時間がかかります。
言葉は知っていても、それを流暢に話すことは筋肉と音の働きです。
ご存知でしょうが、それは話す練習が必要です。

しかし、書くには書く練習をする必要があります。
文章を書くこと、文章の構造を学ぶことには大きなメリットがあります。
30語程度の基本的な文章やジャーナルを書いている場合でも、単語がどのように相互に関連し、どのようにそれを改善できるかを学ぶことができます。
これは私たちの多くができることであり、少なくとも執筆経験がある私はできるようになりました。

文章の構造が理解できたら、このブログ記事の構造も分かるようになります。
最初にそれが何であるかを説明するイントロがあり、真ん中で説明をし、そして次に、結論があります。

これで、ちゃんとした文章構成の基本がわかりました！

Talk about myself/my hometown/my country
Writing and Passion

Ever since I was young, I’ve always had a thing for writing. When I learned how to do it, I got quite good at writing little stories and journal entries. There is something immensely satisfying to me about writing out my own thoughts and thinking about what I think. That’s a weird sentence, but basically – journaling is free therapy and helps you find the things that worry you.

Likewise, I’ve written many short, strange stories as I’ve grown up. I stopped for a while in my 20’s, and that was a huge mistake. It’s just something I love to do and have so much energy for.

The biggest problem is monetizing it. It’s hard work! But I’m trying to figure it out day by day. I’ll just keep writing, I guess.

便利な「It looks/sounds …（〜のようだ）」【日常英会話】

“It looks/sounds ____”

A rather common phrase which I and many other native speakers use is “it looks/sounds <adjective>”.

It’s super useful for almost everything. When someone is going out to eat and they describe what they’re going to eat, you can say “It sounds delicious!”. Conversely, by seeing it, you can say “It looks delicious”.
This phrase is hyper useful for all contexts. You can use it for movies, food, events, countries, emotions, etc. Definitely keep it in mind!

私や他の多くのネイティブスピーカーがよく使うフレーズに、「it looks/sounds + 形容詞（〜のようだ）」があります。

このフレーズはほとんどすべてにおいて非常に便利に使えます。
誰かが食べ物の説明をしたとき、「It sounds delicious!（美味しそう）」と返事をすることができます。

Travelling

Oh boy, travelling is certainly one of my weak points.

I haven’t travelled much in my life! I’ve been to some parts of Australia, a lot of Kyushu in Japan and Serbia twice, but otherwise my traveling experience is very, very limited. One of the places I have pretty big interest in going to at least once in my life is Greece though. The beaches, weather and of course the Acropolis is something I’d like to see. Lots of rich history over there.

What we are doing in Kensington
Building Building Building

Denny here, heya.

Something we’re constantly doing at Kensington is building, building and building. What I mean by this is we’re always looking to build more on top of what we already have – which is great students, teachers and classes. One thing we’re getting to focus on is Eiken in particular, or at least I know I am. We’re figuring out ways how to teach it better and improve our students results – which I think we’re doing quite well in already.

In the future, we should have a lot going for Eiken and our students! Look forward to it.

やあ、デニーです。

ケンジントンで私たちが常に行っていることは、構築、構築、そして構築です。
どういうことかと言うと、いまある物事(クラス、講師、生徒さんなど)のさらに上を目指し作り上げていくということです。

Remote Work(リモートワーク・在宅勤務)について思うこと

Remote Work

What does remote work mean? It means employees working from a location other than the company offices. Such a location could be basically anywhere, the employee’s home, shared spaces, a private office or any other space outside the company’s buildings.

In the last 2 years and because of the Covid-19 pandemic, remote work has become part of many people’s lives. In Kensington as in many other schools the pandemic made us switch many of our classes online and we still have a very large number of students taking their classes from the comfort of their homes.
Personally, my feelings about remote work are mixed, I really enjoy doing it for a part of my workday but I don’t like spending all my workday at home in front of a pc. I feel tired at the end of the day and also if that was the case everyday I think my life would just go by without many highlights.

Remote work（リモートワーク）とはどういう意味でしょうか？
それは、従業員が会社のオフィス以外の場所で働くことを意味します。
場所は、従業員の家、共有スペース、プライベートオフィスなど、基本的にどこでもありえます。

過去２年間で、コロナのパンデミックにより、リモートワークは多くの方の生活の一部となりました。
ケンジントン英会話では、他の多くのスクールと同じように、パンデミックにより多くのレッスンがオンラインに切り替えられましたが、快適な自宅からレッスンを受ける生徒さんはまだとても多くいます。

個人的には、リモートワークに対する私の気持ちはまちまちです。
仕事の一部でそれを行うのはとても楽しいですが、家のパソコンの前で一日中仕事をするのは好きではありません。
一日の終わりには疲れを感じますし、もしそれが毎日なら、私の人生は多くのハイライトなしに過ぎ去ってしまうと思うからです。

Reading

Hello everyone and a very happy new year,
One very good way to improve your English language skills is of course reading. Reading has many advantages, for a start the more you read the better of a reader you become. That means that your reading becomes easier and you can read faster!

Another great advantage of reading is that it improves your vocabulary, please always find a passage that is not too hard or too easy. Just a little bit above your level is good and when you encounter words that you don’t know, it’s a good idea to look them up online sometimes. 

Another good thing about reading is that it helps acquire grammar, many people think that by reading you improve your use of grammar subconsciously. Actually I believe that too. 

There is a tonne of resources for reading online and also don’t forget the reading we include here in Kensington with all our lesson materials.

常に、難しすぎたり簡単すぎたりしない一節を見つけるようにしてください。
あなたの英語レベルより少し上回ったものの方が良いです。
知らない単語に出会ったときは、オンラインなどで調べることをお勧めします。

読むことのもう一つの良い点は、それが文法を習得するのを助けるということです。
多くの人は読むことによって無意識のうちに文法の使い方が良くなると思っていて、実は私もそう信じています。

Tim’s New Year Resolution

Hi everyone,
What do you think about New Year resolutions?
Do you make one or more every year? Personally I used to but in recent years haven’t really made any. My goal is mostly the same, improve one of my skills or a business target. 

This year one of my resolutions is to always be curious about things. I’d like to as much as possible read and research things that I don’t know with a goal of learning and educating myself as much as possible. 

This goal has been spurred by my love for reading and I’d hopefully like to be an example to my children to do the same!

「go for」を使った英語表現【日常英会話】

Expressions with “go for”

Good morning Fukuoka!

As our topic is arranging a night out this week, I think it’s a good chance to practice some expressions using “go”. “Go” is a verb that we can find in many different expressions. Today I will introduce some expressions using “go for”.

Go for a drink: Hey, do you want to go for a drink on Sunday. I know a very nice restaurant on Watanabedori.
Go for dinner: Let’s go for dinner sometime. There is a fancy new restaurant in Akasaka that I’d like to go to.
Go for a drive: Do you want to go for a drive? Driving in the Momochi area at night is really nice!
Go for a run: I went for a run this morning, there is a nice running route in Hirao, near the Fukuoka zoo.
Go for a swim: In summer my family and I always go for a swim somewhere. We usually go to Itoshima.

There are so many other expressions with “go for”. Go for a walk, go for a jog, go for a pint and so on!

Please use them in our class!

今週のレッスンは「Arranging a night out (夜の外出を手配する)」なので、「go」を使った表現を練習する良い機会です。
「go」は、さまざまな表現の中でよく出てくる動詞です。
今日は「go for」を使った表現をいくつかご紹介したいと思います。

  • Go for a drink (お酒を飲みに行く)：
    Hey, do you want to go for a drink on Sunday. I know a very nice restaurant on Watanabedori.
     (ねえ、日曜日に飲み物に行かない？渡辺通りにあるとても素敵なレストランを知ってるよ。) 
  • Go for dinner (夕食を食べに行く)：
    Let’s go for dinner sometime. There is a fancy new restaurant in Akasaka that I’d like to go to.
    (いつか夕食に行きましょう。赤坂に、行きたい新しい高級レストランがあります。) 
  • Go for a drive (ドライブに行く)：
    Do you want to go for a drive? Driving in the Momochi area at night is really nice
    (ドライブに行きませんか？夜のももちエリアでのドライブは本当にいいです！) 
  • Go for a run (走りに行く)：
    I went for a run this morning, there is a nice running route in Hirao, near the Fukuoka zoo.
    (今朝走りに行きました。福岡動物園の近くの平尾には素敵なランニングルートがあります。) 
  • Go for a swim (泳ぎに行く)：
    In summer my family and I always go for a swim somewhere. We usually go to Itoshima.
    (夏には家族と私はいつもどこかへ泳ぎに行きます。たいていは糸島に行きます。)

「go for」には他にもたくさんの表現があります。
