What we are doing in Kensington
New Assistant in the Kids’ School

Hello there everyone,

I’m pleased to inform you that we have a new full time teaching assistant in the kids’ school starting from this month. Her name is HarukaShitabayashi and she has a lot of experience both studying and working overseas, mainly working with underprivileged kids in the Philippines. Haruka speaks great English and also is amazing with computers which will make my business partner Mr Tim Mastoris a very happy man due to my complete inability to up my tech skills!

Greetings everyone, how’re you dancing to the rhythms of summer? Here’s yet another short tip for the TOEIC speaking test; (More on Qn 11)  As you already know, question number 11 requires you to express your opinion on a given subject or issue. As I said earlier, speak as much as you can in the time you have (60 seconds).  Your response must clearly indicate your choice or opinion, supported by logical reasons or arguments and examples. Of course, pay attention to grammar and structure, word choice, pronunciation and intonation as well as pace and flow of your speech.

Business Cards

Something that blew my mind when I came to Japan was the art of handling business cards.

It’s pretty serious and there’s a method to doing it here. In Australia, giving a business card is very casual – sometimes we pull one out of our pocket with two fingers and pass it over to the person with one hand.

Doing this in Japanese business culture would be considered super rude, so one thing that both Western and Eastern cultures should learn is – we do things differently, and while it might be rude to you, it might not be for the other person.

Learn from it, adapt and relax!

日本では名刺の扱い方はとても重要で、そのためのやり方があります。
オーストラリアでは、名刺を渡すのは非常にカジュアルです。

日本のビジネス文化でこれを行うことは非常に失礼だと見なされるため、西洋と東洋の文化の両方が学ぶべきことの一つは、私たちはやり方が異なるということです。

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Learn to fail

When it comes to any study or practice, you must learn to accept that you’re going to fail.

Failure is not a bad thing – it’s what we learn from. Think of it this way: if you did everything perfectly, there would be no such thing as learning. If you get it correct every time, you don’t need to study.

Study is about learning new things, then applying those things. You will probably not get them right at first, so you go back and study it again, until it’s right.

You’re failing, finding the problem, failing again, finding another problem, etc. As you make mistakes, you’re learning to remove them and get things right.

Failure is good – it means there’s more in life for you to learn.

失敗することを学ぶ

勉強や練習に関して言えば、失敗を受け入れることを学ぶ必要があります。

失敗は悪いことではありません。私たちは失敗から学びます。
このように考えてください。
すべてを完璧にやったら、学ぶことなどありません。毎回正しく理解できれば、勉強する必要はありません。

勉強とは、新しいことを学び、それを応用することです。
初めから正しく理解できない場合は、正しく理解できるまで、もう一度勉強してください。

失敗する、問題を見つける、再び失敗する、別の問題を見つける、のような感じです。
失敗をすることで、その失敗をなくし、物事を正しくすることを学ぶことができます。

失敗は良いことです。
それは、あなたの人生の中で学べるものがもっとある、とうことです。

【デニー先生】トップガン マーヴェリックおすすめ！2回も見ました

Talk about myself/my hometown/my country
Top Gun: Maverick

I recently watched Top Gun: Maverick for the second time in theatres.

It’s the first time I’ve been to the movies to see a movie twice, and it’s because Top Gun is such a fantastic film and a breath of fresh air.

It’s worth seeing, not just because it’s an amazing action and filming spectacle (it’s real flying and jets with only a little CG), but because it’s a completely anti-cynical film.

What I mean by that is over the years, many Hollywood films are very cynical and have themes of moral “greyness”. No side is good or bad – heroes have very serious flaws, etc.

Top Gun is none of that. It promotes teamwork, overcoming problems, learning from mistakes and bonding. It has a very positive view on men, women and the Western world which I haven’t seen in a film in a long time. I highly recommend it, it’s fantastic.

最近、２度目の「トップガン マーヴェリック」を見に映画館にいきました。

私が2回も映画を見に映画館に行ったのは初めてです。
それは、トップガンがとても素晴らしい映画であり、気分を一新してくれるものだからです。

素晴らしいアクションと目を見張るような光景（実際の飛行とジェット機。わずかなCGのみ。）だけでなく、完全に反シニカル的な映画なので、一見の価値があります。

どういうことかと言うと、何年にもわたって、多くのハリウッド映画は非常にシニカルで、グレーな道徳をテーマにしています。
良い側、悪い側などはありません。ヒーローにはとても深刻な欠陥がある、などです。

トップガンはそのどれでもありません。
チームワークを奨励し、問題を克服し、間違いから学び、絆を深めます。
長いあいだ映画で見たことのない、男性、女性、そして西洋の世界に対してとてもポジティブな見方があります。
トップガンを強くおすすめします、素晴らしいですよ。

Life Stages

Hi Everyone,

Everyone goes through life stages, and everyone has different experiences – that’s why sharing stories and talking is so enriching. We can learn a whole lot from other people’s lives, just as long as we be humble and open to it.

For example, in my mid 20’s, I learned a lot about health, nutrition, physical fitness and weight lifting. I learned all about it by myself, as well as more efficient social skills. This phase of my life transformed me into a very different person. I became much more confident, relaxed, stronger and a lot healthier. It was a good foundation for my thirties, because now I have excellent health, few problems and keep myself from getting unhealthy very easily.

Sometimes though, I can be a little too strict.

みなさん、こんにちは。

誰もがライフステージを歩き、誰もがさまざまな経験をします。
そのため、ストーリーを共有したり話したりすることはとても充実感があります。
謙虚に、かつオープンである限り、他の人々の生活から多くのことを学ぶことができます。

たとえば、20代半ばに私は、健康、栄養、体力、ウェイトリフティングについて多くのことを学びました。
それらは独学し、また重要なソーシャルスキルも身につけました。
このフェーズで、私はとても変わりました。
前よりもはるかに自信を持ち、リラックスし、強く、そしてずっと健康になりました。
これは30代の自分にとっては良い基盤でした。
今では健康状態が良く、問題は少なく、不健康になりにくいからです。

ときどき、少し厳格すぎることがありますが。

Being a good listener

Hello everyone,

I think one of the most important skills in a businessperson whether they are employers or employees is listening. Active listening is hard honestly, it requires paying a lot of attention to what is being said and trying to genuinely understand what the person talking is feeling and wants to convey. 

Too many times in meetings, while another person is talking we are thinking about what we are going to say and as such don’t pay necessary attention to what he or she is saying. I also do that at times of course but when I catch myself doing it I always try to refocus on the speaker and engage in active listening.

Active listening is very important when learning a language as well, paying attention to the speaker and focusing on what they say is very important in improving one’s listening skill.

こんにちは、みなさん。

雇用主であろうと従業員であろうと、ビジネスマンにとって最も重要なスキルの一つは、耳を傾けることだと思います。
積極的に耳を傾けることは正直言って難しく、話されていることに細心の注意を払い、話している人が感じていることや伝えたいことを真に理解しようとする必要があります。

会議でよくあるのは、誰かが話していても、自分が次に何を言おうとしているのかを考えているので、その人の発言に必要な注意を払っていないことです。
もちろん私も時々そうしてしまうことがあるので、自分でそれをやっていることに気づいたら、話している人に改めて集中して積極的に聞くようにしています。

言語を学ぶときも積極的なリスニングはとても重要です。
話している人に注意を払い、話されていることに集中することは、リスニングスキルを向上させる上で非常に重要です。

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Ask many questions

Hello everyone,

One very important skill for our higher level students is to be able to ask good questions. Usually starting by asking the teachers or another student’s opinion, listening to the opinion, processing what was said and asking good questions. Being a good listener and asking good questions is a very important high level skill.

In the lower level classes we mostly focus on our students speaking as much as possible, in our higher level classes whilst of course again we want our students to talk as much as possible we also want to refine their ability to analyse information on the fly.

So please ask many questions, listen carefully to your teacher’s answer and try to continue the conversation with good questions!

良い聞き手で、良い質問をすることは非常に重要な高レベルのスキルです。

初中級者レベルのレッスンでは、ほとんどの場合、生徒さんができるだけ話すことに重点を置いています。
中上級者レベルのレッスンでも、もちろん、生徒さんにできるだけ多く話してもらいたいのですが、情報をその場で分析する能力も向上させたいと考えています。

なので、たくさん質問をして、講師の答えに注意深く耳を傾け、良い質問で会話を続けてみてください！
