What we are doing in Kensington
Summer Schools

Around the end of July, we’ll be preparing some summer school stuff for our academy students, which should be a lot of fun. I won’t be involved with that directly, but I do know that there is a lot of stuff on the way for the kids, so if your kids are in the academy, they have something to look forward to!

Hey everyone,

The business English expression I would like to introduce to you today is one we use in business when we fail to make progress. In those cases we sometimes say that we are “treading water” and sadly is the feeling I get recently in Kensington. Every year we do something exciting like opening up new schools, starting new classes, improving our processes and this year I think we have as well, especially when it comes to test preparation and our lessons for younger learners. Our progress though and our ability to work on new projects has been hindered by the labour market and our difficulty finding highly skilled staff. We’ve had some very promising candidates though recently so things should get better soon!

【英語学習アドバイス】忙しいときこそレッスン日時を固定する

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Take your lessons on fixed times if you are busy

It may sound slightly counterintuitive but the best way to make sure you take your classes if you are very busy is to fix the time and day you take your classes. 

That way you need to make one less decision every week and can arrange your busy schedule around your English lessons as necessary. 

Keep in mind that in Kensington you can take online classes and can also if necessary change the time/day you take your lessons if necessary and if you contact us by the previous day.

【ティム先生】バスケットボールファンです

Talk about myself/my hometown/my country

I used to love basketball, I would play every day, watch all the games on TV and if there ever were any NBA games broadcast live in Greece I would stay up and watch them especially the ones in the playoffs which took place in June. 

My friends and I would talk about NBA stars and we would imagine how great it would be if ever a Greek athlete made it in the NBA. 

Those days were in the 90s and after I went to university my interest in basketball feigned until one day in June 2011 when I turned on the TV in the morning and the NBA finals were playing between Dallas and Miami. I wasn’t planning to watch the game and had little interest in it in the start but after a few minutes I noticed that these teams were playing pretty amazing basketball and by the end of the game I had become very into the game passionately supporting Dallas.

I ended up watching the entire series and by the end of next season I think I knew almost every player in the league. I watch many games during the season and my son has also become a basketball fan recently so I’m looking forward to watching many games with him. 

We both support the Milwaukee Bucks passionately and love Giannis. Regarding Giannis, I will speak of in a separate blog as his my favourite athlete and an amazing role model for young people.

私はかつて、バスケットボールが大好きで、毎日遊んで、テレビですべての試合を観戦していました。
ギリシャでNBAの試合がライブで放送された場合は、特に6月に行われたプレーオフでは、遅くまで起きて試合を観戦していました。

友人と私はNBAのスターについて話し、ギリシャのアスリートがNBAでプレーしたらどれほど素晴らしいか想像しました。

当時は90年代で、私が大学に行った後は、バスケットボールへの興味は薄れていました。2011年6月のある日、午前中にテレビの電源を入れて、ダラスとマイアミのNBAファイナルが行われているのを見るまでは。
私は試合を観戦する予定はなく、最初はほとんど興味がありませんでしたが、数分した後、これらのチームがかなり素晴らしいプレーをしていることに気付き、試合の終わりまで、ダラスを熱心に応援しながら試合に夢中になりました。 

最終的にはシリーズ全体を見ることになり、次のシーズンの終わりでは、リーグのほぼすべてのプレーヤーを知っていたと思います。
シーズン中はたくさんの試合を観戦していますが、最近は息子もバスケットボールファンになっているので、一緒にたくさんの試合を観戦するのを楽しみにしています。

私たちはミルウォーキー・バックスを熱心に応援し、ジャンニスが大好きです。
ジャンニスは、私たちのお気に入りのアスリートであり、若者にとって素晴らしいロールモデルです。
そのことについては別のブログでお話したいと思います。

What does the black sheep of the family mean?

Imagine being a black sheep in a group of white sheep, you would stand out for all the wrong reasons. All the other sheep would have their beautiful white wool used and yours is of little use to anyone! 

As an idiom, the black sheep is a person who has done something bad that brings embarrassment or shame to his or her family. We usually use it for families, but it can be used within other groups as well such a company or a team etc…

Ex. After they were convicted for fraud, Karen’s parents were the black sheep of their church group.

「black sheep」とはどういう意味でしょうか。
白い羊のグループの中で、あなたは黒い羊であると想像してみてください。
あなたはよくない理由で目立つでしょう。
他のすべての羊は美しい白い羊毛が使われていて、あなたの羊毛はだれにもほとんど役に立ちません！(白い羊毛は染色できるが、黒い羊毛は染色できないため)

イディオムとして、「black sheep」は家族に恥ずかしさや恥をもたらすような悪いことをした人のことです。
普段は家族について使っていますが、会社やチームなど他のグループでも使えます。

What we are doing in Kensington
Treading Water

Hey everyone,

This year has been a very busy one for us here in Kensington, we have worked hard on expanding our test-prep classes, our private classes for younger learners, our group classes for Kindergarten and Elementary school students and we are now very confident about helping out students of all age groups.

Yet, hiring competent staff and teachers has been very hard this year. I know it’s not only us and it’s more of an industry-wide phenomenon but we have been looking for teachers and assistants for our kids schools since January and our hiring is still not completed. Without our staff roster completed it’s very hard to work on and proceed with new and exciting projects and as such I sometimes get the feeling that we are treading water. 

It is what it is though, the borders will at some point open up and more foreign teachers will finally be allowed to come to Japan and then some of our struggles with hiring will be alleviated. Until then, we’ll do the best we can with what we have.

今年はケンジントン英会話にとって非常に忙しい年でした。
私たちはテスト対策レッスン、若い学習者のためのプライベートレッスン、幼稚園と小学生のためのグループレッスンの拡大に一生懸命取り組んできました。
そのため、すべての年齢層の生徒さんに向けて、英語学習のお手伝いをすることに今とても自信を持っています。

それでも、有能なスタッフと講師を雇うのは今年は非常に困難でした。
それは私たちだけではなく、業界全体の現象であることはわかっていますが、1月からキッズスクールの講師とアシスタントの採用がまだ完了していません。
スタッフの採用が終わらなければ、新しいエキサイティングなプロジェクトに取り組み、進めるのは非常に困難です。
私はときどき足踏み状態を続けているように感じます。

とはいえ、いつか国境が開かれ、そしてやっと外国人講師の来日が許可され、採用に苦労することも少なくなるでしょう。
それまでは、私たちが持っているものでできる限り最善を尽くします。

【TOEIC対策】はじめは基本的な能力に焦点を当てる

Focus on basic competency first

Hello everyone,

We many times get students from companies where a high TOEIC score is required.
Usually the target is around 800 which is according to the TOEIC administrator a level equivalent to B2 on the CEFR. 

A B2 user can communicate easily and spontaneously in a clear and detailed manner. This is not yet an experienced speaker, but a B2 user is able to understand and be understood in most situations.

Many times our students though are nowhere the B2 level, sometimes they are A2 or even A1 on the CEFR. (A2 and A1 refer to only basic use of English) and are given no tools to improve their general English competency other than taking TOEIC classes.

The problem with that is that taking TOEIC classes will do very little to build up your English level if you are a very basic user of English. A very simple analogy would be trying to do high school math without knowing junior high school math. The result is of course a very likely failure to get the target score regardless of how much one tries and a lot of stress. 

I would advise the companies requiring such scores to focus on building up the general fluency of their staff first and then focus on building them up to a more advanced speaker with a target of 800 in TOEIC. こんにちは、みなさん。

ケンジントン英会話には、高いTOEICのスコアが求められる企業から来られる生徒さんが多くいらっしゃいます。

通常、ターゲットはだいたい800点で、TOEICの管理者(IIBC)によると、CEFRのB2に相当するレベルです。

B2レベルの方は、明確かつ詳細な方法で、容易に、また自発的にコミュニケーションをとることができます。
まだ経験豊富な英語話者ということではありませんが、B2の方はほとんどの状況で英語の理解が可能です。

ケンジントン英会話の生徒さんはB2レベルではない方が多いです。A2またはA1の方もいます。(CEFRのA2とA1は基本的な英語のみを使える方を指します。)
そして彼らはTOEICのレッスンを受講する以外に一般的な英語能力を向上させるためのツールは与えられていません。

問題は、もしあなたが基本的な英語だけ使える方である場合、TOEICのレッスンを受講しても英語レベルを上げるのにほとんど効果がないということです。
分かりやすい例えとしては、中学校の数学を知らずに高校の数学をやろうとするようなものです。
もちろん、その結果は、どれだけトライして、多くのストレスがあっても、目標スコアを取得できない可能性が非常に高くなります。

そのようなスコアを必要とする企業様には、まずスタッフの基本的な英語の流暢さを構築することに焦点を当て、その次にTOEICで800点を目標とするより高度な英語話者になってもらうことに重きを置くことをお勧めします。

Today’s business English expression is “be on the same page” which means that the people involved in a conversation have the same understanding of what is being discussed. 

Examples

“Just to make sure we are all on the same page here, we will be holding our meeting online for the foreseeable future won’t we?” 

“Yes, that’s right. At least until the Covid situation has blown over.”

“I’m sorry but I’m not sure if we are on the same page here. Could you clarify points one and two of our last meeting with me please?”

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Stay busy, but not too busy.

The running theme for my blogs this week is all about being busy and my advice to you today is to stay as busy as you can with your English learning, but not so busy that you stress yourself out. “Use it or lose it” is exactly what it is all about with languages. For example, I have studied plenty of Japanese in the past and even though my speaking is much much better than it was back when I was still studying a lot my writing is almost non-existent and my reading has mostly been connected to running our business these days and therefore other areas of my reading abilities have suffered. 

It’s a good idea to keep your studies varied and slightly above the level you are comfortable with so do a variety of reading, writing, speaking with different people and listening to all kinds of English materials.Firstly subjects you are interested in, but once you have improved you need to branch out and start going into deeper topics like the sciences, tech, politics, economics and so on to give you a wider vocabulary and a deeper knowledge of the language. Don’t do too much though! Set yourself achievable goals and make sure you rest too. The same as anything if you do too much of it, it just becomes a chore and no longer fun.!

今週の私のブログのテーマはすべて「忙しいこと」です。
そして、今日のアドバイスは、「英語学習でできるだけ忙しくする、でもストレスを感じるほどはしない」ということです。
 「Use it or lose it（使うか、失うか [使わないとダメになってしまう]）」は、まさに言語について表しています。
たとえば、私の日本語のスピーキングは前と比べてはるかに良くなっているにも関わらず、過去にたくさん勉強したライティングのスキルはほとんどなくなっています。
リーディングについては、今の私のビジネス運営に関連している部分以外は難しいです。

いろんな種類の勉強をし、自分の快適なレベルより少し上のものを勉強することをお勧めします。
さまざまなリーディング、ライティング、いろんな人とのスピーキング、そしていろんなものをリスニングしてください。
はじめは、あなたが興味のあるものからで大丈夫ですが、それができるようになったら、科学、技術、政治、経済学などのより深いトピックに広げ始めましょう。
それは、より豊富なボキャブラリーと言語のより深い知識を与えてくれるでしょう。
でもやりすぎないでくださいね！
達成可能な目標を設定し、休憩もしてください。
何事もそうですが、やりすぎると、雑用になって面白くなくなります。
