【ジェイミー先生】日本での忙しさについて思うこと「Work to live, don’t live to work」

The Brits aren’t all that busy!

We have been talking a lot about being busy this week and it’s got me thinking again. Why is it that the Japanese seem to be so busy all the time? 

Of course in Britain people work hard too and students also study hard when the time comes but we just have so much more free time and I can’t for the life of me figure out why the Japanese need to do so much work/ study and have so little free time. British kids for the most part get a good education and university levels in the UK are just as good, if not slightly higher than in Japan, so why the need for all the extra study/ cram school/ private tutoring and the like? British kids wouldn’t dream of going to school at the weekends, don’t have school in the holidays, and have never even heard of cram school, so how do they get their education with all this free time? 

The same can be said for the workplace. I have worked a number of jobs in the UK and we get the work done but we have loads, and I mean loads of free time. Every weekend off and at least  5 weeks of paid holidays in a year not including public holidays. We have a couple of different sayings in Britain that pertain to this one of them is kind of my personal motto too” Work hard, play hard.” The other is “Work to live, don’t live to work”.I think I have a pretty decent work life balance since I run my own company and can take time off when needs be but I always get a bit jealous when I find my brother is on holiday again , it seem like he is never at work! I suppose I’ve just got used to working in Japan and have forgotten how much free time is important to my fellow Brits!

イギリス人はそれほど忙しくありません

今週は「忙しいこと」についてたくさん話していました。それは、私にもう一度このことを考えさせてくれました。
なぜ日本人はいつも忙しそうなのか？

もちろんイギリスでも人はしかるべき時に一生懸命働いて、学生も一生懸命勉強していますが、余暇がたくさんあるので、日本人がなぜそんなにたくさんの仕事や勉強をしなければならないのか、なぜ余暇がそんなに少ないのか、どうしても分かりません。
イギリスの子どもたちはほとんどの場合、良い教育を受けており、大学のレベルは日本よりもわずかに高くはないにしても同じくらい良いのですが、なぜ追加の勉強／塾／家庭教師などが必要なのでしょうか？
週末に学校に行くとは夢にも思わないイギリスの子どもたちは、休日には学校はなく、塾についても聞いたことがありません。
このような自由な時間がありながら、どのようにして教育を受けているのでしょうか。

職場についても同じことが言えます。
私はイギリスでいくつか仕事をしてきましたが、仕事が終わったら、たくさんの自由時間がありました。
毎週末の休みと、1年間に少なくとも5週間の有給休暇。これは祝日を除きます。
イギリスには、これに関連するいくつかのことわざがありますが、そのうちの一つは私の個人的なモットーでもあります。
「Work hard, play hard（よく働き、よく遊べ）」
もう1つは「Work to live, don’t live to work（生きるために働きなさい。働くために生きてはいけない）」です。
自分の会社を経営しているので、仕事と生活のバランスはかなり良いと思います。
必要なときに休暇を取ることができますが、私の兄弟がまたホリデーを取っているのを見つけたときはいつも少し嫉妬します。
まるで彼は決して仕事をしていないように見えるほどです！
おそらく日本で働くことに慣れたので、イギリス人の仲間にとってどれだけ自由時間が重要かを忘れてしまったんだと思います。

おそらく、そろそろ休む時間ですね!!

Hello again! 

In line with the theme of our classes this weekend, here is a phrase we use when we are extremely busy and feel like we have no free time for ourselves. “don’t have a spare moment for” which basically means we don’t have even a second to do anything other than work. 

Example

“I’m rushed off my feet at the moment juggling work and looking after the kids. I don’t even have a spare moment for myself. “

“We are so busy in the office at the moment. I feel like I don’t even have a spare moment to eat lunch. “

 「don’t have a spare moment for」とは、基本的に、仕事以外のことをする時間が1秒もないことを意味します。

[例文]
I’m rushed off my feet at the moment juggling work and looking after the kids. I don’t even have a spare moment for myself.
(仕事をやりくりしながら子どもたちの世話をしていて今とても忙しいです。自分のための時間すらありません。)

We are so busy in the office at the moment. I feel like I don’t even have a spare moment to eat lunch.
(現在、オフィスでは私たちはとても忙しいです。昼食をとる暇さえないような気がします。)

What we are doing in Kensington
Our newest team member!

Hello there everyone, I’m very happy to announce that we have a new member joining us from this month. Robin from the USA. Robin grew up in the USA but has been to school, lived, and worked in Japan in the past and is fully bilingual. He will mostly be working in our adult school to start off with but will hopefully be joining our kids’ team after some more training.

英検の二次試験試験が始まりますね！

Hello there everyone! If you are one of our students who successfully passed the Eiken test in May ( congratulations everyone! ) then you may be taking the speaking test this weekend.You should have already received your scorecard and your second test admission card. On the day of your test please don’t forget to take your admission card, your I.D card from the first test, some form of identification with a photograph on it, and remember to please please switch off your phone before you enter the room! If you didn’t make it this time then the application period for the next test this year is from the 1st of August to the 8th of September.

みなさん、こんにちは！
5月の英検に合格した方は(おめでとうございます！)、今週末に二次試験であるスピーキングテストを受ける方がいらっしゃるかと思います。
一次試験の成績表と二次試験の受験票はすでに受け取っているはずですので、テスト当日はその受験票、本人確認票、写真付きの身分証明書を忘れずに持っていき、部屋に入る前には必ず携帯電話の電源を切ってくださいね。

次の英検の申請受付期間は8月1日〜9月8日です。

How’s your weekend everyone? 

In my home country (Uganda), studying abroad is quite popular. Thousands of young and not so young people go to study abroad every year. Some of them on Government sponsorship (their studies are paid for by the government of Uganda). In fact, there are many Ugandan students studying advanced courses(Masters and PhDs) in top Japanese universities now. In the past, the majority of Ugandan students used to study in western English speaking countries. In the last 20 years however, China, India, Japan, Ukraine, Russia are among the study destinations for Ugandan students.

毎年、何千人もの若者や、そうではない人も海外に留学しています。

実際に、現在、日本のトップの大学で上級コース（修士号と博士号）を勉強しているウガンダの学生がたくさんいます。
