Greetings everyone, is autumn knocking on our door yet? 

As you think about the answer to that question, here is another short tip for the 

TOEIC grammar section. As you know, grammar is the way of arranging words to build or construct meaningful sentences. The words that make a sentence are categorised into 8 groups called the 8 parts of the speech. As you practice for the grammar test, please familiarize yourself with each of the 8 parts of the speech.

  1. noun 2.adjective 3.verb 4. adverb 5.preposition 6. article 7. conjunction 8. interjection

TOEICの文法問題への答えを考えるときのコツをご紹介します。
ご存知のように、文法は、意味のある文を組み立てたり構成したりするために単語を配置する方法です。
文を構成する単語は、8品詞と呼ばれる8つのグループに分類されます。
文法テストの練習をするときは、8品詞のそれぞれに慣れてください。

【ビジネス英語】「fired（解雇）」ではなく「let go」を使う – Soft Language

Business English, especially in the corporate world, often uses “soft” language to try to give bad or good news in the business world.

Personally, I don’t agree with this – I like to be direct and upfront, but that’s not how business works. For example, if someone is being “let go” in business, they are being fired. We just don’t use fired, because it sounds hard and mean.

Another example is “cutting costs”. Cutting costs can mean that we must reduce amount of money being spent, but a lot of the time it has a hidden meaning – it means “we are losing money and we might not be able to keep the business going”.

A lot of language in the business world is soft and you must learn to read between the lines, in my opinion. Maybe that’s why I’m no good at it, because I’m too direct!

個人的には、これには同意しません。

たとえば、ビジネスの中で誰かが「let go」されるとは、その人が「fired（解雇）」されることを意味します。
厳しく意地悪に聞こえるので、「fired」という言葉は使いません。

もう一つの例は「cutting costs」です。
「cutting costs」するということは、支出する金額を削減する必要があることを意味しますが、多くの場合、そこには隠された意味があります。
つまり、「お金を失い、ビジネスを続けられなくなる可能性がある」という意味です。

私の意見としては、ビジネスの世界の多くの言葉はソフトであり、行間を読むことを学ぶ必要があります。
おそらく、だから私は苦手なのですね。私は直球すぎる！

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Explain what you learned

A good test for yourself to see if you understand something properly is to explain what you have learned, but in your own words.

For example, if I teach you about the meaning of a word and explain how to use it, don’t try to explain it by copying what I said. Try to explain it to yourself in your own words.

This teaches you to think on your own, and also to test if you fully understand something or not. If you’re unable to explain it clearly without copying, then you might need to study it more.

何かを正しく理解しているかどうかを確認するための良いテストは、学んだことを自分の言葉で説明することです。

たとえば、私が言葉の意味と使い方を説明した場合、私が言ったことをそのままコピーして説明するのではなく、自分の言葉で説明することを試してみてください。

これにより、自分で考えることができ、完全に理解しているかどうかをテストすることができます。
コピーしないと明確に説明できない場合は、もう少し勉強する必要があるかもしれません。

Learning about Aquinas

Recently, I’ve been really into studying theology – mainly about the writings of Thomas Aquinas. Aquinas was a scholar that lived in the medieval ages, and wrote something called the “Summa Theologiae”, which is a huge compendium of information about Christian theology.

I’m not reading the Summa, because it is several thousand pages long, but I’ve been studying about its teachings and ideas quite a bit. Aquinas was a very interesting person and was super intelligent – and I think his work is important to learn about if you want to learn about the history of the West. It influenced a lot of it!

アクィナスは中世に生きた学者で、「神学大全」と呼ばれるものを書きました。
これは、キリスト教神学に関する膨大な情報をまとめたものです。

「神学大全」は数千ページにも及ぶので読んでいませんが、その教えや考え方についてはかなり勉強しています。
アクィナスは非常に興味深い人物で、非常に知的な人物でした。
西洋の歴史について学びたいのであれば、彼の研究について学ぶことは重要だと思います。
彼の研究は多くの西洋の歴史に影響を与えました！

Heatstroke. What does it mean?

Well, recently in Japan there’s a big heatwave, which means that the temperature every day has been very high. This leads to a lot of sunburn, but also heatstroke. Heatstroke can be very dangerous and can even kill you.

Symptoms are also dangerous, so you have to keep an eye on people if they show confusion, fatigue, very hot skin and sometimes no sweating too. Take care during this heatwave, and remember what heatstroke means!

さて、最近日本では「heatwave」が続いています。
「heatwave」とは、毎日の気温が非常に高いことを指します。
これは多くの日焼けにつながりますが、「heatstroke（熱中症）」にもつながります。
熱中症は非常に危険で、命を落とすことさえあります。

症状も危険なので、混乱、疲労、非常に熱い皮膚、または汗をかいていない人に注意を向ける必要があります。
この酷暑の中では熱中症にお気をつけください。「heatstroke」の意味もぜひ覚えてくださいね。

Careers and Companies

I’ll be honest, I’m not all that great with careers and companies. My main career now is in English teaching, and has been for nearly a decade now. I studied it, wrote about it in a book of mine (it’s on Amazon, too!) and am planning on developing more of my personal things regarding it, but overall I live my life based on my passions for things, which come and go.

English teaching is something I really enjoy, but I also really enjoy teaching philosophy, debating, computing and lots of art. I’m not great with business and business dealings…maybe because I’m too creative!

What we are doing in Kensington
Summer Schools for the Kids

Something that our Kids Academy side of things has been doing is summer schools for the students there. So far it’s been really great for them! They’ve been going on lots of different excursions and learning about many different things. If you have kids or know anyone interested in immersing their kids in English, then I recommend they check out our Kids Academy – it’s really good.

Businesses with high staff numbers often talk about “alignment” between teams. This means making sure that different departments are working towards the same goals, and not accidentally competing against each other, or doing similar tasks without sharing what they have learned. 

Even though Kensington doesn’t have such a large number of staff, I think we are about 20 people now, we have realized recently how necessary it is for our staff to first of all know the goals and secondly be aligned towards achieving them. 

How aligned are you with other members in your company?`

【英語学習アドバイス】忙しい時はレッスン日時を固定するのがオススメ

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Are you busy? Fix your lessons and study time

Kensington offers students a lot of flexibility when it comes to scheduling, you can schedule your lessons on different days and at different times according to your schedule and to your wishes. 

While this service is very convenient and much loved by our students, I think that the best way to navigate your schedule if you are really busy is to fix both your lesson dates and also your study time. 

That way you will know beforehand when you take your lessons and when your study time is and you won’t arrange any work or other things you have to do during those days and times. 

Keep in mind that fixing your lesson days still doesn’t mean that you can’t change them if necessary, it just removes one of the things that you have to decide week in week out.

このサービスはとても便利で、生徒さんたちにとても愛されていますが、もしあなたがとても忙しい場合、日々のスケジュールをコントロールする最善の方法は、レッスンの曜日と学習時間の両方を固定することだと思います。

そうすれば、レッスンをいつ受けるか、勉強をいつするのかを事前に把握することができるので、その時間帯に仕事やその他のことを予定にいれたりはしないでしょう。

レッスン日を固定したとしても、変更できない訳ではありません。毎週決めなければならないことの一つを減らすことができるということです。
