Hello everyone, any plans for the weekend? 

“Hit the road” is our expression for this week. Hit the road means to start a journey or to leave for a trip.

A: Hey Yumi, I heard that you’re going to Bali island. When are you hitting the road?
B: This Saturday at 10:30. We’re super excited!

When I travel in Japan, I like to try popular local dishes and enjoy hot spring baths.

“WHEN”in this case is used for making a general statement about something that is usually true or correct.

【TOEIC対策】文法についてのアドバイス – 前置詞に注意する

Greetings everyone,  hope  you’re enjoying the cool breezes of Autumn. Here’s another short pointer in the grammar section of the TOEIC test:  Prepositions 

A preposition is a word—and almost always a very small, very common word—that shows direction (to in “a letter to you”), location (at in “at the door”), or time (by in “by noon”), or that introduces an object (of in “a basket of apples”).

Please pay attention to prepositions when you’re reading a grammar question and when you’re choosing the right answer. A preposition can make a difference! 

Example: Q. The team’s great performance in the championship________their good teamwork. 

(1) resulted in
(2) as resulted
(3) resulted from
(4) to result

As you can see, the right answer is determined by the right preposition (in this case “from”)

TOEIC 文法セクション – 前置詞

みなさん、こんにちは。秋の涼しいそよ風を楽しんでいますか？
今日は TOEICの文法問題についてアドバイスをご紹介します。

[前置詞]
前置詞は、ほとんどの場合とても小さいですが、よく使われる単語です。
方向 (to: [例] a letter to yo)、場所 (at: [例] at the door)、または時間 (by: [例] by noon) を示します。
または物事を紹介します (of: [例] a basket of apples)。

文法問題を読んだり、正しい答えを選んだりする時には、前置詞に注意してください。
前置詞は文章に影響をあたえることがあります！

[例]
The team’s great performance in the championship________their good teamwork. 

(1) resulted in
(2) as resulted
(3) resulted from
(4) to result

ご覧のとおり、正解は正しい前置詞 (この場合は「from」) によって決まります。

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Writing and Speaking it out

I was recently asked by a student how they can improve their ability to express reasons in speech and talk for a longer time. One of the difficulties they were having was giving longer answers with full sentences.

The advice I gave was pretty simple – write a journal. In the journal, you can talk about your own day, how it went, what you did, and what you thought about it. Once you’ve done this, you can read it out aloud to yourself or in your head (both work as they both practice the speaking muscles to some degree).

This helps you practice expressing your opinions at a pace you’re comfortable with, which is your writing speed. It’ll also help give your mind the ability to see how English sentences are structured better, and by re-reading it and practicing, you’re helping your speaking ability out. Try it.

私は最近、生徒さんから、スピーチで理由を表現する能力とより長く話す能力を向上させる方法について尋ねられました。
その生徒さんが抱えていた困難の一つは、完全な文章でより長い回答をすることでした。

私がしたアドバイスは非常にシンプルです。 – 日記を書いてください。
日記の中では、自分の1日について、どのように過ごしたか、何をしたか、何を考えたかについて話すことができます。
それが完了したら、声に出して読むか、頭の中で読みます（どちらも話す筋肉をある程度鍛えるため効果的です）。

これにより、快適なペース、つまりライティングの速度で意見を述べる練習ができます。
また、英語の文章がどのように構成されているかを頭で理解するのにも役立ちます。
読み返しながら練習することで、スピーキング能力を高めることができます。

【デニー先生】ペニーホイッスルとローホイッスルD管を練習中

The pennywhistle and Low D Whistle

Since around May or so, I’ve been actively practicing playing two instruments – the pennywhistle and the Low D whistle.

Both are actually the same kind of instrument, but the pennywhistle is small and has a higher pitch, and the low D is a bigger whistle but has a lower pitch. As you can guess, they are both in the note of D – this means that the lowest note they can play is the D note.

These instruments are originally from Ireland. I absolutely love playing it and am learning (and making) lots of songs for them. You can try the pennywhistle for a cheap price too – you can get beginner instruments for about 1500 yen on Amazon.

5月くらいから、2つの楽器を積極的に練習しています。その楽器とはペニーホイッスルとローホイッスルD管です。

どちらも同じ種類の楽器ですが、ペニーホイッスルは小さくて音程が高く、ローホイッスルD管はペニーホイッスルよりも大きく、音程が低くなります。
ご想像のとおり、どちらもD調のホイッスルです。それは、演奏できる最低音がDの音であることを意味します。

これらの楽器はもともとアイルランドからきています。
私はそれを演奏するのが大好きで、たくさんの曲を学んでいます (そして作っています)。ペニーホイッスルは安くで購入でき、初心者用の楽器であればAmazonで1500円ほどで買えます。

“Top of your game”

Being on “top of your game” means to be in the best possible shape for something. This doesn’t just mean sports or physical fitness however – this can mean being on top of your mental game for a test, for a speech, etc.

Anything that requires some form of skill, you can be “on top of your game” for. It doesn’t even have to be for an event – maybe you just feel really good on a particular day and “I feel on top of my game today!”.

「Top of your game」にいるとは、何かに対して可能な限り最高の状態にあることを意味します。
これはスポーツや体力だけを意味するものではありません。
テストやスピーチなどのために精神的に最高の状態にあることを意味する場合もあります。

何かのスキルが必要なものはなんでも、「on top of your game」に立つことができます。
また、なんらかのイベントのためだけの言葉ではなく、例えば、ある日に気分が良い時は、「I feel on top of my game today!（今日は調子がいい!）」と言うこともできます。

Hi Everyone,

It’s my favourite season from September onwards – Autumn!

I love Autumn for a number of reasons, but the main one is the quiet, blue skies with the cool wind, especially in the morning. There’s a difference in the air quality in Autumn, and I really enjoy being in quiet places in nature enjoying that.

Of course, there’s Halloween too, which is my favourite seasonal event. I absolutely love it. What’s your favourite thing about Autumn?

What we are doing in Kensington
Looking at Eiken 1

Hi everyone,

Recently, some of us (mainly Tim and I) have been looking into Eiken 1 and how that test works compared to the other Eiken tests.

Eiken 1 is a huge jump from Eiken 2. Grammatically it’s much, much harder, and vocabulary is far more advanced. If you’re wanting to take the Eiken 1 test, you need to be in top English form to get it done. It’s a good challenge though, especially if you’re an advanced student.

The whole is greater than the sum of its parts

This is an expression that I really love. I think the best marriages work this way, when people have skills and ideas that help elevate the achievements of a couple to something so much bigger and better than each person could achieve on their own.

The same applies to companies and more specifically teams, working in teams can be a pain at times and it can be bumpy and messy but when teams work well together, the whole is much greater than the sum of its parts.

Please try and use this expression,
