Hi everyone, how’s your language study going? 

The language learning advice/tip for me and  you, is understanding the culture(s) that use the language you’re learning is one of the shortcuts  of learning that language. Words, phrases, expressions make more sense and are more practical when we understand the cultural context in which they’re used. 

For example, You wouldn’t understand the expression “Trick or Treat!” without learning about the Halloween festival, would you? 

In the last 20 or so years, many people have been learning Japanese through singing Japanese songs, reading and watching manga and animation.

So, language = culture.

Halloween in Uganda

How’s your weekend going everyone? It’s time to tell you yet again, a little bit about my country and culture on the theme of Halloween. When I was a kid, Halloween was not a popular holiday in my country. But christians used to celebrate All Hallows day (All saints Day) on November 1st. However, in the last 20 years Halloween has gained popularity. Many night clubs in cities have Halloween parties and parades. People dress up in Halloween costumes and have lots of fun!

Hi everyone, any big plans for the weekend?

Sticking to the Halloween theme, our everyday English expression this week is a slang 

“ghosted or be ghosted or ghost someone” To be ghosted is when your friend, acquaintance, lover etc suddenly cuts off communication with you. You can also be ghosted when you arrange to meet with someone somewhere and they don’t come and don’t communicate why.

A: Where’s the new receptionist?
B: He hasn’t showed up since we hired him last week. He hasn’t called or texted and he’s not answering my calls and texts!
A: I can’t believe he has ghosted us!

ハロウィンに関連して、今週の日常英会話表現はスラングである「ghosted」「be ghosted」「ghost someone」です。
「ghosted」とは、友人、知人、恋人などが突然あなたとの連絡を断つことです。
また、どこかで誰かと会う約束をしたのに、彼らが来ず、理由を話してくれない場合にも、「ghosted」となります。

Warm greetings everyone. Have you noticed the colorful autumn mantle mother nature is wearing?

 Here’s another short TOEIC test taking tip; choosing the right answer from the four alternatives.

Almost always, two answers out of the four choices are totally wrong. Start by eliminating those two choices. You’ll be left with two answers; one that is almost correct but has a little problem ( the fake),  and the correct answer.  If you  identify the little problem with one of those answers, you’ll be able to choose the right answer.

「Any press is good press」欧米企業のソーシャルメディアの使い方

While it’s not super common in Japan yet, in the Western world, social media branding has become a major factor in successful businesses, especially across Twitter and Instagram.

Many small businesses are using these platforms to make posts to get more followers and generate income. Some of them in particular write very controversial things online so they can get attention, and there’s a saying in English where “Any press is good press”. It means that if it’s negative or positive feedback, the goal is to get attention and get sales.

Personally, I don’t like this method at all, but it’s something you can notice in the Western world as it has become very common.

【英語学習アドバイス】本を読んで文脈を通して単語を覚える

Learning through context

When learning new words, most people use flash cards to memorize the meaning of a word, but the problem with this is that you don’t know how the word is used and what context.

A great way to learn is to read a book in English or any foreign language, and translate the words you don’t know, then reading the sentences again. This gives you context and understanding how the word is used, so you will memorize it much better. This is how I improve my Japanese, and I can memorize maybe 10-15 words in about 20 minutes. I recommend it!

【講師デニー】カフェイン摂取を一週間絶った結果

Caffeine Cuts

Last month, I cut out all caffeine intake for about a week, because I wanted to “detox” from it and reset my sleep, as my health was getting worse because of it.

Throughout that week, I slept about 9-10 hours a day. It was unbelievable how tired I got, and I had pretty strong headaches from caffeine withdrawals over two or three days.

After that though, I felt really good and very well rested. I now wake up at 6am every day and feel fresh, and I only drink coffee or anything with caffeine in the morning, around 7-8am.

Caffeine stays in your system for about 12 hours after drinking it, and it can cut deep sleep by about 20%. This means that you’re sleeping like someone who is 15 years older than you. Not good!

Try to cut caffeine for a week or a month and see what happens. You’ll be surprised how much we rely on it!

先月、カフェインの摂取を1週間ほど断ちました。
なぜなら、健康状態が悪化していたので、カフェインを「デトックス」して睡眠をリセットしたかったからです。

その週を通して、私は1日約9～10時間寝ていました。
信じられないほどの疲労感と、カフェイン離脱による2、3日にわたるかなりの頭痛に悩まされました。

しかしその後は、とても気分が良く、よく休むことができました。
私は今、毎日朝6時に起きてフレッシュに感じています。
そして、朝の7時から8時頃にコーヒーかカフェインを含むものだけを飲みます。

カフェインは飲んでから約12時間体内に留まり、深い睡眠を約20%減らすことがあります。
これは、今のあなたよりも15年歳をとった状態で寝ていることを意味します。良くないですね！

1週間または1ヶ月間カフェインをカットしてみて、何が起こるか見てみてください。
私たちがどれだけ依存しているかに驚くことでしょう。
