Travel English – go stir crazy, get off the beaten track

Hello there!

To be perfectly honest we’ve been writing these blogs for a while now and I think we have covered a lot of the expressions we would use in most situations so today I’ll give you a couple of idioms connected to travel instead.

Firstly, “go stir crazy”, which means to feel stressed and uncomfortable when stuck in the same place for too long.

Example: I really need to get my next holiday booked soon, I’m going stir crazy hanging around this city all the time.

Next, “ get off the beaten track”, which means to travel in places that people don’t often visit and not in the usual tourist spots.

Example: My wife and I often do different things when we go on holiday, she likes to spend time shopping and visiting tourist attractions, but I prefer to get off the beaten track.

実を言うとしばらくの間このブログを書いていて、私達は様々な状況で使うであろう表現法をカバーしてきました。ですので今日は代わりに旅行へ行った際に活用できるいくつかの熟語をご紹介します。

まず初めに “go stir crazy”　これは同じ時間に長い時間立ち往生しているとストレスを感じ不快に感じることを意味します。

例えば…私は今すぐでも次の休暇の予約をとらないといけない。私はいつもこの街にいて狂いそうだ。

次に “ get off the beaten track”　これは人気の観光名所ではなくあまり人は訪れない場所で旅行をすることは意味します。

例えば… いつも私の妻は休日出かけるときは別の事をすることが多く、買い物や観光スポットに訪れることに時間を費やします。しかし私はよく知らない道を歩くほうが好きだ。

 Hi there everyone, here are a few expressions that you can use when you are on the plane.

Excuse me, could I switch seats? I’d like to sit next to my family.
Excuse me,  I think you are sitting in my seat, I’m supposed to be in 42 B.
Excuse me, my headphones don’t seem to be working, could I have another pair please.
Excuse me could you help me put these in the overhead compartment please?
Could I borrow a pen please, I want to fill out my disembarkation card.
I’m sorry my husband has a terrible headache,  do you have any painkillers we can have?

Travel English – Travelling to Kyoto

Hello everyone,

I am travelling to Kyoto this weekend with my family. We’ll leave Fukuoka on Friday morning and we’ll be back on Tuesday evening. We’ll be staying in Kyoto for 4 days. I haven’t decided our itinerary just yet, but some of thing we’ll be doing are walking around the parks, gardens, shrines and temples, enjoying the cherry blossoms, seeing the lit-up temples at night and trying the local cuisine.

I’m especially looking forward to seeing the cherry blossoms lit up at night and eating Nishin Soba and yuba. I’m hoping for good weather!

Hi there,
One of the things it took me ages to get the courage to do was to go to the hairdressers, I used to have my hair cut by a girl at work, or I would just shave it myself. Here are a few of the more important phrases you need when visiting the hairdressers.

Hello my name is Jaimie Wright.I have an appointment at 3 o’clock today.

Is this your first time here?

Yes, this is my first time here.

I see, and what would you like done today?

Just a trim please.

Just an inch or so off the top please.

Can you shave it up the back please.

I’d like my hair permed.

I’d like my hair straightened.

I’d like highlights please.

I’d like my hair coloured please.

I’d like it shaved, about 10 millimetres is fine.
