Looking back on 2022

Hello again!

If you have been in Kensington Eikaiwa for a while you will have probably taken one of our seasonal classes called looking back on the year and I have to say that at the end of each year I am usually a bit disappointed with myself! I always take a negative view of how I spend each year and think that I should have done more, drunk less, saved more money, been nicer, travelled more, and this that and the next thing, but this year all that has come to a stop. It’s time to be positive and focus on the good points from the year instead. 

I did a lot last year. In March I took a trip to Osaka, Nara, and Kyoto and was able to meet up with one of our former staff members Rina ,who despite being pregnant , still looked as youthful and healthy as always and was kind enough to take me out and about and show me around Osaka a bit. I travelled to Miyazaki with my family in May, went on my disastrous but still fun trip to Fuji in July, and even made a brief stop in the UK at the end of October so all in all I’d say that was a pretty good year. 

My son is now in first grade of junior high and is, if he keeps growing like this, going to a very big man indeed just like his uncle and grandfather and my daughter is now in fourth grade of primary school and has started hip hop dance classes and learning the guitar with our new teacher Patrick in the Yakuin school as her teacher. Where does the time go? It really seems like yesterday that they were just babies. I succeeded in losing a lot of weight last year ( it was about time) even though my attempts to cut down on drinking beer have failed miserably! 

All in all, I’d say that the positives outweighed the negatives last year and from this year on when the end of the year comes I’m going to be focusing on what went right rather than moping about complaining into my wine glass about what went wrong!

また会いましたね！

ケンジントン英会話にしばらくいらっしゃる方は、「Looking back on the year（今年を振り返って）」という、毎年12月に行われるクラスをおそらく受講されると思います。
そして、いつも年末になると、私は自分自身に少し失望していると言わざるを得ません！
私は毎年自分がどのように過ごしたかについては、いつもネガティブで、もっと多くのことをし、飲酒を減らし、お金を節約し、より良い生活を送り、もっと旅行をするべきだった等々…と考えます。しかし、今年はそれを行いません。
ポジティブになり、その年の良い点に集中する時が来ました。

昨年はいろんなことを行いました。
3月に大阪、奈良、京都に旅行に行った時には、以前スタッフだったリナさんに会うことができました。
妊娠中にもかかわらず、相変わらず若々しく健康そうで、親切にも私を連れ出して大阪を少し案内してくれました。
5月には家族と一緒に宮崎旅行をし、7月には悲惨でしたが楽しい富士山旅行に行き、10月末にはイギリスに少し立ち寄ったこともありました。
全体としては、かなり良い年だったと思います。

息子は今中学1年生で、このままのスピードで成長していくとすぐに彼の叔父や祖父のように大人になるでしょう。娘は小学4年生になってヒップホップダンスを始め、ケンジントン英会話(薬院校)の新しい講師であるパトリックにギターを習い始めました。
時間はどこへ行く？彼らが赤ちゃんだった頃が本当に昨日のことのように感じます。
昨年は大幅な減量に成功しました (もうそろそろその時期でした)。ビールを減らそうという試みは惨めに失敗しましたが。

全体として、昨年はプラス面がマイナス面を上回ったと思います。
今年から年末にかけては、ワイングラスに向かって上手くいかなかったことについて不平を言って腐るのではなく、何がうまくいったかに集中します！

Xmas in my childhood

Xmas used to be the happiest time of year for me when I was a kid. In fact, I’d start counting down to Xmas in October. In my home country Uganda, schools close in early December for  the longest school break (Dec to late Jan). 

Around December 15th, my sisters would start decorating the house for Xmas. They put a tall ( real, not plastic) Xmas tree in the living room and played Xmas songs on cassette players. On Xmas morning there were Xmas presents with our names on them, under the Xmas tree. Our family used to go to church on Xmas. I think almost everybody in our town used to go church on Xmas in those days. After church, we would come home and have a great Xmas feast! Our parents used to watch Queen Elizabeth II’s Xmas message on TV at 2:00 p.m. local time. 

And oh, we didn’t open our presents on Xmas day. We opened them on the next day (Dec. 26th). December 26th is Boxing Day. The day for opening Xmas presents. I think nowadays most kids in my country don’t wait for boxing day. They open their presents on Xmas day. When I was a kid, we used to wait!

子どもの頃のクリスマス

私が子どもの頃、クリスマスは一年で最も幸せな時でした。
実際私は10月からクリスマスまでのカウントダウンを始めていました。
私の母国であるウガンダでは、12月初旬に学校は休校になり、最も長い休暇が始まります。 (12月から 1月下旬まで) 

12月15日頃、私の姉妹たちはクリスマスに向けて家の飾り付けを始めていました。
彼らはリビングルームに背の高いクリスマスツリー (プラスチックではなく本物の) を置き、カセットプレーヤーでクリスマスソングを流していました。
クリスマスの朝、クリスマスツリーの下には私たちの名前が書かれたクリスマスプレゼントが置かれます。
私たち家族はクリスマスに教会に行っていました。
当時、私たちの町のほとんどの人はクリスマスに教会に行っていたと思います。
教会の後、私たちは家に帰って素晴らしいクリスマスのごちそうを食べます。
午後2時には、両親は女王エリザベス2世のクリスマスメッセージをテレビで見ます。

そして、そういえば、私たちはクリスマスの日にプレゼントを開けずに、翌日（12月26日）に開けていました。12月26日はボクシングデーといって、クリスマスプレゼントを開ける日です。
近ごろ、私の国のほとんどの子どもたちはボクシングデーまで待たずにクリスマスの日にプレゼントを開けます。
私が子どもの頃は開けるのは待っていました！

子どもの頃はどのようにクリスマスを祝いましたか。

Long Time No Sick

Hi,
In a very big surprise to me over the past week or so, I got sick!

Some students recently noticed that I had a runny nose and looked tired – that’s because I caught a cold. However, unfortunately the cold has become a little more complicated, because I developed an infection in my ear and sinuses.

It has led to some nasty symptoms over recent days, so I went to the doctor and am now taking antibiotics, as my ear is blocked up.

For me, this is surprising because the last time I was very ill like this was about 9 years ago, so it is rare.

Anyway, I’ll be fine, and please take care of yourselves too, especially during winter.

Long Time No Sick

こんにちは。
この一週間かそこらで、とても驚きでしたが、私は病気になりました!

最近、鼻水が出て疲れて見えることに気づいた生徒さんもいましたが、私は風邪をひいていて、そして残念なことに耳と鼻に感染したため風邪が少し複雑になりました。

ここ数日でひどい症状が出ていたので病院に行きました。耳が詰まっていたため抗生物質を服用しています。

私にとってこれは驚くべきことです。
なぜなら、私が最後にこのようにとても調子が悪くなったのは約9年前だったからです。なので、めったにないことです。

とにかく、私は良くなります。
特に冬のあいだは、あなたも体に気をつけてくださいね。

Hello everyone,

It’s very tough to gauge whether I had a good year or not at the end of the year. The biggest problem is that I, as most of us, suffer from recency bias and tend to place more importance on events that happened to us recently. If that’s the case then this year has been terrible for me as my last week was particularly bad.

If I try to avoid recency bias and also try to remember what I did this year. I also need to remember what my new year resolution was this year cause I have no idea what it was anymore. I’ll check and get back to writing this blog!

Ok I checked my first blog of the year and found out my resolution! It was to always be curious about things. I’d like to as much as possible read and research things that I don’t know with a goal of learning and educating myself as much as possible. 

Wow, I actually really did that this year. I’ve read a tonne of books so far, and I have studied about many things I knew very little about, mainly astronomy and science. I also managed to study Japanese a fair bit and I think if I keep it up in a year or two I’ll be fairly fluent in it which would be super helpful.

I will post about my favourite books of the year on our Yakuin blog before the holidays so please check it out for those of you that like reading and are interested in my recommendations.

今年が良い年だったかどうかを判断するのは非常にむずかしいことです。
判断する際の最大の問題は、ほとんどの人がそうであるように、終末効果(recency bias)に悩まされ最近起こった出来事をより重視する傾向があるということです。
そのため先週は特にひどかったので今年がどうだったか判断するとしたら、今年はひどいものでした。

終末効果(recency bias)を避け今年何をしたかを思い出そうとすると、今年の新年の抱負が何であったかを思い出す必要があります。
確認してからブログの続きを書きます！

わかりました。今年最初のブログ「ティムの新年の抱負」に今年の抱負が書いてありました！

「常に物事に興味を持つことです。可能な限り学び、成長することを目標として、自分の知らないことをできるだけ読んで調べたいと思っています。」

ワオ、私は今年これらを実際に行いました。
これまでにたくさんの本を読み、天文学や科学などほとんど何も知らなかった多くのことを学びました。
また日本語もかなり勉強できたので、これを1、2年続ければかなり流暢に話せるようになり、とても役立つと思います。

冬休み前に、今年のお気に入りの本について ケンジントン英会話 薬院校(ウィンザー英会話)のブログ に投稿する予定です。
読書好きで、私のおすすめの本に興味がある方はぜひチェックしてください。

a quick trip home

Hi there! 

Last month I had to make an unscheduled visit to the UK and even though it was a bit of a mad dash I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it (except the 13 hour layover in Helsinki airport that is).  It’s been a few years since I last went back so no big surprises for me this time.The last couple of times I felt like a complete alien in my own country because I hadn’t been back for so long.  There were a couple of things that occurred to me while I was there though. One thing that struck me was the rest of the world really seems to have moved on from covid. There are no restrictions, the number of infections doesn’t appear on the news and most of all nobody is wearing a mask anymore. On my first day back I asked my brother if I should bring one with me when we were going out and  he looked at me like I was crazy and said “What for? ” The other thing was that I am very out of practice at small talk. The Scots are a friendly bunch and due to the amount of time I have spent in Japan I’m a bit taken aback when shop staff or waiters etc strike up a conversation with me. I’m just not sure how to react! 

I had a chance to meet up with friends who I haven’t seen for a long time,some for almost twenty years actually and yes, we partied Scottish style so I was exhausted when I got back and the price of international flights right now is kind of beyond a joke but all in all it was a nice little trip. Can’t wait to go back longer next time round!

急な帰省

こんにちは！

先月、私は予定外のイギリス訪問をしなければなりませんでした。
少し気が狂ったようにバタバタでしたが、私はそれを完全に楽しんだと言わざるを得ません (ヘルシンキ空港での13時間の乗り継ぎを除いて)。
前回帰国してから数年しか経っていないので、今回は大きな驚きはありませんでした。
それまでは、私は長い間帰国していなかったので、自分の国で自分は完全に外国人かのように感じていました。
今回、私が帰省している間、私に起こったことがいくつかありました。
まず私を驚かせたのは、世界の残りの部分が本当にcovidから離れたように見えるということでした。
制限はなく、感染者数はニュースに載らず、何よりももう誰もマスクを着用していません。
帰国した初日、兄弟に出かけるときにマスクを持って行ったほうがいいかと尋ねたところ、彼はまるで私が狂ったかのように目を向けて、「何のために？」と言いました。
次に驚いたことは、私は世間話が苦手になったということです。
スコットランド人はとてもフレンドリーですが、私は日本で過ごした時間が長いため、店のスタッフやウェイターなどが私と会話を始めると少し面食らいます。
どう反応していいのか分からないのです！

長い間会っていなかった友人達と会う機会がありました。20年近く会っていない友人もいました。
そして、もちろん、スコットランド式のパーティーをしたので、戻ったときには疲れ果てていたし、それに今の国際線の料金は冗談じゃないほど高すぎます。
しかし、全体としては素敵なプチ旅行でした。
次回はもっと長く滞在するのが待ちきれません！

My childhood pet

Hello everyone, any big plans for the weekend?  It’s time to tell you a little about myself/culture/country…
Sticking to the week’s theme “Animals and pets”, I’ll tell you about my childhood pet.
I had a pet dog when I was kid.He was a mixed breed dog, so I didn’t know exactly what breed he was.He looked like a lion, so I named him Simba. Simba means lion in Swahili.
I used to walk him and play with him in the park. He used to follow me everywhere.
I taught him some tricks. He was a very loyal dog.
One day, he got run over by a car! I was devastated!
I never had another dog.
Please tell your teacher and classmates about your childhood pet, if you had one.

みなさん、こんにちは。週末に何か大きな予定はありますか？
今日は「私の出身地、私自身」をお話しする日なので、今週のテーマ「Animals and pets（動物とペット）」に関連して、子どもの頃のペットについてお話しします。

子どもの頃、愛犬を飼っていました。
雑種だったので正確な犬種はわかりませんでしたが、見た目がライオンに似ていたので、シンバと名付けました。
シンバとはスワヒリ語でライオンを意味します。
私は彼を散歩させたり、公園で彼と遊んだりしていました。
彼はどこにでも私を追いかけていました。
私は彼にいくつかの技を教えました。とても忠実な犬でした。
しかしある日、彼は車に轢かれました！私は途方に暮れました！
私は別の犬を飼ったことがありません。

子どもの頃にペットを飼っていた場合は、そのことを講師やクラスメートに伝えてみてくださいね。

The Australian Summer Comes

From this month onward, Australia is going to get real hot, because the seasons are opposite over there – it’s summer there when it’s winter here.

This means the days will get hot, the beaches will get very busy, and the sun will burn you easily if you don’t use sunscreen. It’s also a good time to head to Australia for a holiday, but a strong warning – because of the current global issues, it’s very expensive!

If you do go however, I recommend checking out Sydney and the beaches there. It’s great at this time of year.

あちらでは季節が反対だからです。こちらが冬の時は、あちらは夏になります。

昼は暑くなり、ビーチは非常に混雑し、日焼け止めを使わないと太陽があなたを簡単にひどく日焼けさせます。
休暇でオーストラリアに行くのに良い時期ですが、注意が必要なのは、現在の世界的な問題のため、非常に費用がかかります!

もし行くなら、シドニーとそこのビーチをチェックすることをおすすめします。
この時期は最高ですよ。

going out for lunch or dinner

Hey guys, 

Since our topic for today is “Going out”, it’s a good chance for me to talk about my going out habits. In truth I’m not so big on going out and mostly prefer a quiet night home with my family to drinking out.

Usually when I do go out, I mostly go out with my family to have dinner. My kids are not especially adventurous when it comes to food so we tend to go to the same few places for dinner. They include our favourite Chinese restaurant in Takamiya, our favourite Yakiniku restaurant in Hirao, our favourite Italian restaurant in Sakurazaka and our favourite French restaurant in Yakuin (The French restaurant we use for special occasions, wedding anniversaries or my wife’s birthday)

When I go out for lunch, I usually eat something quick and simple around our schools, mostly soba at a small soba restaurant in Takasago. 

Do you have any good recommendations for family-friendly restaurants in the Yakuin or Hirao area? If so please let me know!

こんにちは、みなさん。

今日のテーマは「Going Out（外出）」なので、私の外出習慣について話す良い機会です。
実のところ、私は外出があまり好きではなく、飲みに行くよりも家族と一緒に静かな夜を家で過ごすことを好むことが多いです。

外出するときはたいてい家族と一緒に夕食を食べに出かけるときです。
私の子どもたちは食べ物に関しては特に冒険的ではないので、夕食にはいくつかの同じ場所に行く傾向があります。
高宮にあるお気に入りの中華料理店、平尾のお気に入りの焼肉店、桜坂のお気に入りのイタリアンレストラン、薬院のお気に入りのフランス料理店 (特別な日、結婚記念日、または妻の誕生日に行くお店) によく行きます。

ランチに出かけるときは、たいてい学校の近くで手早く簡単なものを食べます。
よく行くのは、高砂にある小さなそば屋さんです。

薬院・平尾エリアでおすすめのファミリー向けレストランはありますか？

As you all know this weekend is Halloween! I’m sure that a lot of you are familiar with some of the traditions connected with Halloween such as dressing up, carving jack o lanterns and especially trick or treating but have you ever heard of “guising”? 

Trick or treating is actually an American Halloween tradition and as such it has become the more widely recognised version of what happens on Halloween night due to the influence of American entertainment, but the UK, or Scotland at least, has a slightly different version which I just mentioned earlier called guising. 

The premise of guising is pretty much the same as trick or treating, kids dress up and visit houses in the neighbourhood and are rewarded with candy, fruit, and other kinds of snacks, but the main difference is that we have to actually go into the house and perform a “party piece”. Your party piece can be anything really but things like songs, jokes, riddles, and simple magic tricks are pretty popular. One time a couple of kids performed a ballroom dance in my living room which was pretty inventive I thought. In some houses you visit there may well be a Halloween party going on and you will be able to join that for a while and take part in some games that we like to play on Halloween night such as “dooking for apples” where you have to get as many apples as you can out of a basin only using your mouth!

I’m not sure if guising is still done in exactly the same way as this nowadays but I have some really fun memories of it when I was a child.

Guising（ガイジング）

ご存知の通り10月31日はハロウィン！
みなさんはハロウィンに関連する伝統として仮装やジャック・オ・ランタン、特にトリック・オア・トリートなどはよくご存じかと思いますが、「guising」について聞いたことがありますか?

トリック・オア・トリートは実際にはアメリカのハロウィンの伝統です。
アメリカのエンターテイメントの影響によって、ハロウィンの夜に行うものとして広く認識されています。
ですが、イギリス、または少なくともスコットランドでは、少し違うやり方をします。それは、前述の「guising（ガイジング）」呼ばれます。

「guising」の前提は、トリック・オア・トリートとほとんど同じです。
子どもたちは仮装して近所の家を訪れ、キャンディー、フルーツ、その他のスナックをご褒美として受け取りますが、主な違いは、実際に家に入って何か披露しなければいけないことです。
披露するものはなんでも構いませんが、歌、ジョーク、なぞなぞ、簡単な手品などはかなり人気があります。
ある時、数人の子供が私のリビングルームで社交ダンスを披露しましたが、これはかなり独創的だと思いました。
訪れる家の中には、ハロウィンパーティーが行われている時もあり、そのパーティーにしばらく参加して、ハロウィンの夜によく行われるゲームに参加することもできます。
「dooking for apples」と呼ばれるゲームでは、あなたは洗面器に入ったりんごを口だけでたくさん取り出さなければなりません！

今でもこれとまったく同じような「guising」が行われているのかどうかはわかりませんが、「guising」は私の子どもの頃の本当に楽しい思い出です。

How’s your weekend going everyone? It’s time to tell you yet again, a little bit about my country and culture on the theme of Halloween. When I was a kid, Halloween was not a popular holiday in my country. But christians used to celebrate All Hallows day (All saints Day) on November 1st. However, in the last 20 years Halloween has gained popularity. Many night clubs in cities have Halloween parties and parades. People dress up in Halloween costumes and have lots of fun!

週末はいかがお過ごしですか？
ハロウィンをテーマに、今日は私の国と文化について少しお話しします。
私がこどもの頃、私の国ではハロウィンはポピュラーな日ではなく、キリスト教徒の人たちだけ、11月1日にAll Hallows day (万聖節) を祝っていました。
しかし、ここ20年間でハロウィンは人気を博しました。
都市の多くのナイトクラブでは、ハロウィンパーティーやパレードが開催され、人々はハロウィンの仮装をして、みんなでとても楽しんでいます！
