Use our pre-study material

In Kensington, by using our original pre-study system and materials you can pre-study all the grammar and vocabulary that are necessary for you in class. Please take good advantage of this system, once you have pre-studied the material the class runs much more smoothly and you can focus on using what you have pre-studied in class to make an as natural as possible conversation with your teacher in private classes and with another student in group classes. 

We can then focus our classes on areas of weakness, and on expanding your grammar and vocabulary. Pre-studying our materials effectively saves you a lot of time and helps you improve faster. It’s a great system, please utilise it!

The more the better!

Hope you’re having a good weekend everyone. The language learning and study advice I give myself and to our students is that  the more exposure to the target language the better. The classroom should not be the only place we learn the language but an addition to many other ways. In fact, the classroom is a good place to experiment or try out some of the language you’ve learned for example on youtube, an English drama, radio broadcast or podcast etc.

“Slow on difficult, fast on easy”

What do I mean by this saying?

Well, recently I’ve been learning how to play two different instruments, and one thing I’ve picked up on is when something is easy, I decide to just speed it up on that part, but slow down significantly on very difficult parts.

The reason this is useful is because you trust your memory to do most of the work on things you have learnt quite well – but you focus your awareness on parts that are tricky. This is a very useful method of learning too – you’re increasing the speed and strength of “strengths” and slowing down and improving “weak” points.

Use this with your English too. Do you have difficulty with explaining things and reasoning? Slow down when expressing complex thought. Go fast and relax on easy stuff. This works!

このことわざはどういう意味でしょう？

最近私は、２種類の楽器の演奏方法を学びました。
そこで私が気付いたことは、何かが簡単なとき、その部分ではスピードを上げましたが、非常に難しいパートでは大幅にスピードを落としたことです。

このやり方が役立った理由は、私たちは何か得意なことを行う際、自分の中でよく理解できた記憶を使って作業をし、難しいことを行うときには意識を集中させるからです。
これはとても便利な学習方法でもあります。
「得意」なところでは速度と強度を高め、「不得意」なところでは速度を遅くして改善します。

英語学習でもぜひこれを使ってください。
物事を説明したり、推論するのに苦労していませんか？
複雑な考えを表現するときは減速しましょう。
そして、簡単なもののときに素早く行い、リラックスしましょう。
これはうまくいきます！

Your private classes are fully customized and there are few things if any that we can’t do. We have helped students across a wide range of occupations, across a wide range of language needs and there is almost nothing I can think of pertaining to an English lesson that we can’t do at a high level.

Please always remember that your private classes are fully personalized and use that feature to study what you want to. We are always open to communication and consultation so if there is anything that you would like to focus your studies on, please let us know!

Push Yourself!

Hello there, 

I have noticed a trend amongst my students to kind of “cruise” at a certain level. It is very easy to get comfortable in class and fall into a kind of comfort zone. This is of course very pleasant but it doesn’t really lead to much progress in your studies. I recommend pushing yourself a little from time to time. Here are a few suggestions of what you could do to get yourself out of your comfort zone in our school. 

・Try taking a class a level higher than your current level
・Switch days and take a class with a different teacher
・Use the higher level supplemental materials, video, reading, grammar pdf etc.
・Take the occasional private lesson to up teacher to student speaking time
・Try taking an English exam from time to time. We also provide assistance with preparing for tests.

レッスンをしている中で、生徒さんたちは今のレベルのレッスンに留まる傾向があることに気づきました。
今のレッスンが快適で、一種のコンフォートゾーンに簡単に入ることができてしまいます。
もちろんこれは非常に楽しいことですが、学習の進歩にはあまりつながりません。
私がオススメするのは、ときどき自分自身に少しプレッシャーかけることです。
そこで今日は、ケンジントン英会話でのコンフォートゾーンから抜け出すための方法をご提案します。

・現在のレベルよりも高いレベルのレッスンを受けてみる
・レッスン日を変えみて、別の講師のレッスンを受けてみる
・より高いレベルの教材、動画、読書、文法などを使ってみる
・たまにプライベートレッスンを受けて、講師が話す英語をリスニングする時間を増やしてみる
・ときどき英語の試験を受けてみる (テスト対策のお手伝いをさせていただきます)

Consume Media

Hope you’re having or had a good weekend, everyone. The language study/learning advice I give to my students and myself this week is “Consume Media” in the target language. Make an effort to listen, watch, read, browse media, even for a few minutes everyday. You’ll learn many interesting, useful and natural expressions. And try using them in class or ask your teacher for more examples for their usage.

Rest

Something I often say to many of my students when learning English is the need to rest as well as study hard.

It is really important to do this, because if you study too much, you do not give your brain the processing time it needs to memorize new things. You have to think of the brain like a muscle – if you train a muscle, you’re breaking down its fibres by stressing it. Once those tears happen, it needs rest in order to become stronger.

The same thing happens with your brain. To establish new memories, you must rest after the work has been done. Healthy food is important too, and plenty of water!

You’ll be surprised how much better you can memorize when you give yourself the rest you deserve.

多くの英語を学んでいる生徒さんに私がよく言うことは、一生懸命勉強するのと同じように休むことも必要だということです。

これは非常に重要なことです。
なぜなら、勉強しすぎると、何か新しいものを記憶するために必要な処理時間を脳に与えることができないからです。
私たちは脳を筋肉のように考える必要があります。
筋肉を鍛えると、その筋肉にストレスが与えられ、筋繊維が切れます。
その裂傷が起こったら、筋肉は強くなるために休む必要があります。

同じことがあなたの脳にも起こります。
新しい記憶を作るには、脳を使ったら休む必要があります。
健康的な食べ物も重要です。あとたくさん水をとることも大事です！

きっとあなたは、休んでいい時に休むだけで、前よりも記憶力が良くなっていることに驚くでしょう。

Stay positive and have confidence in your abilities

Hello there, having a chilled Sunday? The language study / learning advice I give to myself and our students is to stay positive and have confidence in our abilities. We should stop telling ourselves that we’re not good at all. Let’s be willing to advance to a higher level, if you’ve been in level 1 for a long time, try some Level 2 classes or Level 3 classes if you’ve been in Level 2 for a long time.
We can do it!

より高いレベルに進んでいきましょう。
例えばレベル１に長くいる場合は、レベル２のレッスンを試してみてください。
レベル２に長い間いる場合は、レベル３のレッスンを試してください。

ライティングをしよう！【英語学習アドバイス】

Get writing!

Recently I’ve been giving all my private students extra writing to do on the subject of the week. Although we practice mostly speaking and grammar in class, writing is also a very important skill in language learning and I have found it to be a very useful way to review the class and think more deeply about the topic. 

Writing will also improve your speaking skills in the long run because you need to  think about sentence structure and grammar, plus you have time to add more complex ideas and vocabulary into what you want to say than you would when speaking to your teacher or partner in class. My advice would be to start slowly and build yourself up. For the lower level students I usually ask them to write about 50 to 80 words on a topic so it doesn’t get too tiring and we build up from there. For mid to higher level students I usually recommend about 150 to 200 words but the choice is yours.

最近、私はすべてのプライベートレッスンの生徒さんに、その週のレッスンに関する追加のライティング課題を与えています。
私たちは主にスピーキングと文法をレッスン中に練習しますが、ライティングは言語学習において非常に重要なスキルです。
このライティング課題は、レッスンの復習や、レッスンテーマをより深く考えるのにとても役立つ方法であることがわかりました。

文章構成や文法について考える必要があるため、ライティングをすることで長期的にはスピーキングスキルも向上します。
さらに、ライティングをすると、スピーキングをするときよりも複雑なアイディアや語彙を書くことができます。
私からのアドバイスは、ライティングを始める時は短い文章から少しずつ始めて、徐々に自信をつけていくということです。
初級の生徒さんの場合、私は通常、トピックについて50〜80語程度書くように伝えます。
そうすれば疲れすぎず、そこから積み上げていくことができるからです。
中級から上級の生徒さんには、通常150〜200語程度をおすすめしますが、生徒さん次第です。

追加でライティングを試したいが、どこからどのように始めればよいかわからない場合は、どうぞ講師にお尋ねください。
