I bought a new jacket last week. The jacket was a bit expensive but I really like it!

I went to an Italian restaurant last night. It was the first time I had been to the restaurant and the food was amazing.

Thank you so much for the advice you gave me. It was very helpful!

Could you pass me the salt and pepper please?

  • the River Nile(ナイル川)
  • The Sea of Japan(日本海)
  • The Rockies(ロッキー山脈)
  • the U.K(イギリス)
  • The Czech Republic(チェコ共和国)

  • Lake Victoria(ヴィクトリア湖)
  • Mt Aso(阿蘇山)
  • Japan(日本)

  • The Queen of England(イングランドの女王)
  • The President of the United States of America(アメリカ合衆国大統領)
  • The Pope(教皇)
  • The head of the company(会社の社長)

  • Queen Elizabeth(エリザベス女王)
  • President Trump(トランプ大統領)
  • Pope John Paul(ヨハネ・パウロ教皇)
  • President Tanaka(田中社長)

Hello everyone,
Today I’d like to give you some information on how to use “the”. It is a very big topic and I can only scratch the surface of it really but here are a few examples for just now and I’ll follow up with another blog about this sometime in the future.

Firstly, we use “the” when the identity of something is known. For instance when we mention a noun for the first time we usually use a/an if it is countable and then when the noun is mentioned again we will use the.

“I bought a new jacket last week. The jacket was a bit expensive but I really like it!”

“I went to an Italian restaurant last night. It was the first time I had been to the restaurant and the food was amazing.”

“Thank you so much for the advice you gave me. It was very helpful!

“Could you pass me the salt and pepper please?”

We use the in front of the names of some things such as rivers, seas, mountain ranges, and countries which are unions or republics.

Examples

the River Nile, The Sea of Japan, The Rockies, the U.K, The Czech Republic

But we don’t use it in front of things like lakes, mountains, and countries which are not unions or republics

Lake Victoria, Mt Aso, Japan

We also use it when we are talking about people using their title or position.

The Queen of England, The President of the United States of America, The Pope, The head of the company

We don’t use it though when we give their name

Queen Elizabeth, President Trump, Pope John Paul, President Tanaka

Hope that comes in handy.

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Identify your bad habits and fix them

After a fairly lengthy hiatus due to time restraints stemming from covid issues we have restarted the adult team meetings and one phrase that has come up from our most eloquent teacher Denny is “fossilised errors”. This means mistakes that students make that haven’t been properly rectified in the past and have now become habitual and quite possibly the student is unaware of. They often take the form of errors with prepositions or grammar and although they have become habitual, they are of course  fixable if regularly pointed out and the student makes a conscious effort to rectify them in class. Of course this problem can only be dealt with if it is understood by the student so I suggest you ask your teacher if there are any common errors that you make that need fixing. It goes without saying that we always try to correct these problems anyway but especially in a group class it is a little difficult to stay100 percent on top of things all the time. Please feel free to ask us any time about how to fix these kind of common problems but in the meantime if you are taking private classes, one way to get rid of them is to start doing writing homework because this gives you more of a chance to think about what you want to say and it is also easier to see what errors you commonly make when your writing is corrected by you teacher.

Find a way to make your language learning fun

We all know that learning a foreign language can be a chore. It’s easy to lose motivation and take long breaks or even give up! In order to keep motivated please try to find ways to make your language study fun and practical. For a topic like Xmas and new year’s how about reading or watching  You tube videos about xmas recipes, new year’s traditions in…..(country)? Wouldn’t be fascinating to learn that in some American communities people eat something green on the 1st of the year. Why?

Green is the color of money in the US! It’s believed in those communities that eating something green on the 1st day of the year, would attract money to you throughout the year.

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Short and steady is better than long and intense

Hi,
A quick tip today, but you can apply this method of study into any kind of training or learning.

When studying, try to study 10-15 minutes a day. Short, focused bursts of study. This is much better than very hard, long bouts of study time (1-2 hours). Why?

If you’re studying very hard and very intensely, you burn out quickly. It’s tiring and not sustainable. However, 10-15 minutes a day is much easier to focus on. By doing this, you’re focusing on specific grammar and English topics that you can review daily, and then get on with the rest of your day.

This mindset is useful for physical training, too. If you are doing 10 push ups a day, you’re keeping your body active and it’s not too rough. The interesting thing that happens though is you adapt to 10 pushups and it becomes easy over time – so you start to increase it to maybe 15 push ups, because it’s more of a challenge.
Slow and steady is a very good way of keeping general fitness, as well as keeping your study consistent. It’s much easier.

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Start Small

Hello everyone,
It’s always important to remember that learning a language is not a sprint but a marathon. Keeping at it for a long time and establishing long term study habits that work for you is definitely better than studying super hard for 2 months and then giving up.

A very important first rule for most people when starting or when trying to establish a new language learning habit is to start small. Setting difficult-to-achieve targets in the beginning of your studies is basically setting yourself up for failure.

It would be much preferable to set a small achievable everyday target (such as 5 minutes a day) at least at first so you can start building your language learning habit. (Remember that in order to establish a habit you should first set a clearly defined time for it every day) After you have established your habit and studying 5 minutes a day has become really easy, then you can up your target to say 15 minutes a day.

Please talk to me anytime you would like about how to establish good language learning habits,

Best,

Tim

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Make a to do list

Hello again.

The last couple of years have not been great for any of us and have affected us all in different ways. One thing I have noticed over these past two years is that some of my students seem to be lacking direction when it comes to their studies mainly because the original reason for studying has been affected by the covid pandemic.

One way to keep focusing on your studies though is to identify what you have succeeded in doing so far and what you need to learn in the future.

For example It could be a grammar list. Do you know how and when to use the present perfect? Yes?. Good for you! No? Time to focus on that.

It could be more practical. Have you successfully handled a customer at your workplace in English? Yes?How can you do it even better next time No? Ask your teacher to help you with it.

I think that compiling a “can do” and “needs work” list is a very good way for you to improve on what you have learned and also give you some direction and focus to your studies and to keep you motivated to learn more and use what you have learned too. Language learning is a pretty long process and there is always room for improvement. If you need clear instruction on what you should be focusing on from now on, please remember you can ask your teacher anytime.

Make a to do list(やることリストを作る)

Yes
Noですか?

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Phases/steps of language learning-which step are on or aiming for?

Hello there, taking it easy on Sunday? Here are steps/phases we go through when learning a language. Take a look if you’re interested and maybe check where you’re.

1. Able to speak a little and understand almost nothing

3. Become conversational-can hold a conversation

4. Able to speak and listen without translating words in your native language in your mind

5. Thinking completely in the target language as you speak and listen

6. Be able to follow and participate in a conversation among a large group of native speakers- you interject and express a thought, a joke etc in the conversation from time to time.

Which step or phase are you on  and which phase are you aiming for?
Keep making efforts!

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Don’t Hesitate to Speak, Mistakes and All

Whenever you come to my classes, whether it’s in groups or privates, don’t ever hesitate to speak openly and with mistakes. It’s actually extremely important to make mistakes, because once we isolate them, we can correct them and improve from there.

In school, we’re often taught through tests that being wrong is “bad”, so many people are naturally hesitant to try, because they’re afraid to make a mistake and do things perfectly.

This is completely incorrect. You have to try to learn, and you will make mistakes, because mistakes = learning!

Denny

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Set a time to study

Hey guys,

I know that I’m sounding like a broken record here but the most important step you have to make during language acquisition is making time to study the language on a hopefully daily basis. That means that you need to build a studying habit and the first step in building a habit is to set a clearly defined time for it.

A good time to start any habit is first thing in the morning, for example you can leave your textbook next to your bed and give it a read after you’ve gotten up.
Another good time is on your way to work if you are using public transport, or during your lunch break.

For me personally, mornings are the best time to build any habit but that may be different for each person. What’s very important though is to have a clearly set time for your studies.

Please give it a try and good luck!
Tim

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Try to think in English outside of class

Hello there everyone,

My study tip for today as you can see from the title is to try to think in English not only in the classroom but also when you are at home, shopping, on the bus, or basically doing anything at all. It is one way that I used to practice when I was learning Japanese. Firstly I would just remember the names of everyday objects around the house, then I would think about how many there are, where they are, and finally what we do with them all in Japanese and confirm it (much to her annoyance after a few months) with my wife. In this way you can learn nouns, the use of the verb be, singular forms, plural forms, and verbs and adjectives. That is a pretty good amount of study just in the house. From there the possibilities are pretty much endless. For example something simple like going to the supermarket can give you many opportunities to think in or about English. If you have someone in the house to practice with like I did then all the better but it is perfectly possible to do by yourself too.

If you have any questions about how to go about this then please ask me next time in class or just give it a go first and let me see how it goes.

Jaimie
