What we are doing in Kensington

Hello there everyone,
As you heard from Henry last week we will be incorporating more visuals into our classes from now on so please take a look at the photos and blurbs included in the materials. Another change we will be making is to the first part of the class, the small talk section.

We see each other about once a week and sometimes nothing much has changed from the previous week, so from now if you have nothing much to say about what is happening in your life right now, why don’t you prepare a photo to talk about with your partner.

There are no particular subjects for the photos, it can be something you ate/ cooked recently,  a place you have been to in the past, a family member or friend, a picture of your home/ car, whatever you like. This is a good chance for you to have a think about what you’ll be saying in the small talk section of the class and not just the vocabulary we ask you to pre-study.

他にも新しい取組みとして、これからはレッスンの最初にスモールトークの時間を設けて行くことになりました。
でも、私たちは大体1週間に一度お会いするので、特に変わったこともなくいつも通り…な時もありますよね、今後はそんな時、あなたが準備しておいた写真について、パートナーに話してみてください。

写真については、特に決まったテーマはありません。あなたが最近食べたり料理したもの、過去に訪れた場所、家族や友人のこと、家や車のことなど、何でもいいのです。
スモールトークの時間に何を話そうかと考える時は、好きな写真の英語描写を学ぶ良い機会です。ボキャブラリー以外の予習としてぜひやってみてください。

Talk about my country
English history is long and multicultural. 

Around 600 years ago, some big tribes migrated to my home country of England from mainland Europe. The language that they spoke was the beginning of the English language that you are learning today.
One of the biggest tribes was called the Angles.
The word ‘England’ originally meant ‘land of the Angles’, and ‘English’ meant ‘related to the Angles’.
Back then, ‘English’ was probably a word people used when describing that tribe, instead of language.
That’s the beginning of the origin story of ‘English’.
Isn’t it interesting how language changes over time?

イギリスの歴史は長く、多文化的である

 600年ほど前、いくつかの大きな部族が、ヨーロッパの本土から私の母国であるイギリスへ移住してきました。彼らが話していた言語が、みなさんが現在学習されている「英語」の始まりです。最も大きかった部族の一つはアングル族と呼ばれました。 ‘England’＝「イギリス」という言葉はもともと‘land of the Angles’ =「アングル族の土地」という意味で、‘English’は 「アングル族に関係のある」という意味だったのです。その当時、多分‘English’は言語（英語）という意味ではなく、人々がその部族（アングル族）について言い表す時に用いた言葉だったのでしょう。これが‘English’の語源のはじまりのお話です。時間を経ると、言語がこんな風に変化するなんて、おもしろいですよね？

This week’s subject – Choices

This week’s subject is choices, and well we’ll practice how to choose between things.

We are going to talk about our preferences and give reasoning in different situations. Some of the things we’ll practice are choosing clothes when shopping, choosing what to do when arranging a night out, choosing where to go with a friend on a trip.

It’s a really cool class and we cover some very important grammar so please don’t miss it!!

自分たちの好みについて話してから、様々な場面でどうするか話し合います。

Service for beginners -how to use “would you like” at a restaurant

Hello everyone,

Do you work in the service industry? Are you also a beginner in English? Well in that case in addition to learning how to say “hello” with a big smile to your foreign customers you should also probably learn how to use “would you like”.

For example if you work at a restaurant (Which was our subject this weekend) see how many things you could say with only using “would you like”.

Where would you like to sit?
Would you like me to take your jacket?
Would you like something to drink?
Would you like to order?
Would you like to see the wine menu?
Would you like anything else?
How would you like it cooked?
How would you like it served?
Would you like to have dessert?
Would you like to have the bill?
How would you like to pay?
Would you like me to call you a taxi?
etc…..

“Would you like” is a magical expression that makes dealing with foreign customers so much easier, so it’s a good idea to learn how to use it well. If you need more help, why don’t you arrange a private lesson with one of our great teachers in Kensington!!

英語の接客をカンタンにしてくれる魔法の言葉 “would you like”

みなさんこんにちは。

サービス業界で働いていらっしゃ いますか。そして英語は初心者でいらっしゃる？だとしたら、まず外国からのお客様に大きな笑顔とともに “Hello!” という言い方を覚えた後、次にお勧めしたいのは “would you like” （ご希望されますか）の使い方です。

例えばレストランにお勤めだとすると（これは今週のレッスントピックでもあります）、 “would you like” を使うだけでこんなにたくさんのことを話せるんですよ。

【例】どこにおかけになりますか。（どこに座るのを希望されますか。）
【例】ジャケットをお預かりしましょうか。（ジャケットをお預かりすることを希望されますか。）
【例】お飲み物はいかがでしょうか。（＝何か飲むものを希望されますか）
【例】ご注文なさいますか。（＝ご注文を希望されますか）
【例】ワインのメニューはいかがでしょうか。（＝ワインメニューを希望されますか）
【例】他にご希望はございますか。（＝何か他のものも希望されますか）
【例】調理はどのようにいたしましょうか。（＝どのように調理するのを希望されますか）
【例】どのようにお出しいたしましょうか。（＝どのようにお出しするのを希望されますか）
【例】デザートはいかがでしょうか。（＝デザートを希望されますか）
【例】お会計をお持ちしましょうか。（＝お会計を希望されますか）
【例】お支払いはいかがいたしましょうか。（＝お支払いはどのように希望されますか）
【例】タクシーをお呼びいたしましょうか。（＝タクシーをよぶよう希望されますか）
などなど。

At the restaurant – Ordering in English!

Hello everyone,

This weekend in our classes around Fukuoka city, we’ll be teaching you one of our most popular classes. A very large amount of our students study English for travelling and one of the most pleasurable activities when travelling is trying local delicacies!

Our “at the restaurant” class is designed as a very practical class for our beginner students, while also learning how to use “would you like” and “I’d like / can I …” which gives it practical applications in basically almost any service scenario in English.

For higher level students the situations and language necessary is more complex and we also learn how to make complaints politely.

Kids Academy in Sakurazaka is open on Thursdays too!

Hello everyone,

Today’s news relates to our kids school in Sakurazaka and Yakuin,

As our class student limit has been slightly reduced due to social distancing and as the Kensington Kids Academy is becoming more and more popular thanks to the stellar job of our Academy team, we’ll be starting Thursday Kindergarten classes too in our Sakurazaka school. The teachers will be Kori and Liam with Chiharu, Yuki or Yoshiko as our teaching assistants!

The academy classes tend to fill up pretty quickly so if you are interested in getting a fantastic education for your children, better let us know quickly!

Arranging a night out

Hello there everyone,

The topic for our group classes this week in our schools in Akasaka, Yakuin, and Nishijin is “ Arranging a Night Out”. We will be discussing how you spend your nights out, different areas of the city and what there is to do there, and what you do or don’t enjoy doing when you go out. In the second part of the class, we will be performing a role play, in which we will be making, accepting and refusing invitations, making suggestions, and arranging where and when to meet. We will also be practicing the difference between formal English and casual English.

There are some ways to say “メール ありがとう” in English such as
Thank you for your mail.

if someone has replied to you, you can also say
Thank you for your reply/response.

if someone has replied to you quickly, you can also say
Thank you for your quick reply/response.

Please keep in mind that you can’t say.
Thank you for your quick mail. ← Wrong

you can also say
Thank you for contacting me.

if someone has replied to you quickly
Thank you for contacting me so soon.

「メールを有難うございます／ました」という場合には何通りかの言い方があります。例えば

まずは：「メールを有難うございました。」
返信をもらった場合には、「ご返信、有難うございました。」
迅速に返信をもらった際には、「早々のご返信を有難うございました。」
✘こちらは間違いの例：「素早いメールを有難うございます。」
こんな言い方も可能：「ご連絡くださり有難うございます。」
連絡が迅速な場合は：「早速ご連絡くださり有難うございます。」

How to use almost in English

Hello everyone,

Almost is a word that almost all my students use wrongly. My students basically think that almost means ほとんど and while that is true, it leads to mistakes as the use of ほとんど in Japanese and “Almost” in English is slightly different.

For example in Japanese the following sentence is ok
ほとんどの日本人はご飯を食べます。
But in English
“Almost Japanese people eat rice.” is not a correct sentence.

I think a better way to think of “almost” in Japanese is もう少しで or (実は違うが)…に近い.
So you have sentences such as

It’s almost three o’clock. ← It’s not 3 o’clock yet but it’s very close to 3, maybe 2:57 or something.
My glass is almost empty. ← My glass is not 100% empty yet, but it’s very close to being empty soon.
Almost all Japanese people eat rice. ← Not all Japanese people eat rice but it’s very close to all, for example 99% or something.
I almost drowned when I was a young boy. ← I had a very scary experience and I was very nearly dead, but I survived now and I can talk about it.

日本人の間違えやすい英語： “almost” を正しく使うコツ

皆さんこんにちは

“almost”という言葉は、大部分の生徒さんが間違って使ってしまいます。基本的に生徒さんたちは “almost”＝「ほとんど」だと考えてしまいます。それは正しくはあるのですが、日本語の「ほとんど」と英語の “almost”の使い方がやや異なるため、間違いにつながってしまします。

例えば日本語では、次の言い方は正しいですよね。
【例】「ほとんどの日本人は米を食べます。」
しかし英語で
“Almost Japanese people eat rice.” と言うと誤りです。

日本語で “almost”を考えるときのコツは、「もう少しで」あるいは「 (実は違うが)…に近い」と置き換えてみることです。.
ですから、次の文のように考えてみましょう。

【例】「ほとんど（＝もう少しで）3時です。」←まだ3時ではないけれどとても近い。おそらく14:57くらい。
【例】「私のグラスはほとんど空（に近い）です。」←100％空ではないけれど、もう空に近づいている。
【例】「ほとんど全ての（＝100％に近い）日本人が米を食べます。」←全日本人が食べるわけではないけれど、それに近い、例えば99％など。
【例】「子どものころ、ほとんど溺れかけた（が実際に溺れたわけではない）」←非常に恐ろしい思いをして死にかけたが、実際には今も生きていてその話をしている。
