How I spent Halloween

Last weekend was Halloween. Honestly it’s not such a big event for me but recently because of our kids school and because I have young children we recently celebrate it every year. In our kids school both the teachers and our students come dressed up. My favourite costume was Yuki being a unicorn, that was pretty cool!

This year, my family went to a Halloween party for the first time. We dressed up and had some drinks at a friends’ house. My wife was a firefighter, my son was Peter Pan (so cuuuute), my daughter a pirate and I was a dictator. Actually my costume was that of a sailor but I added sunglasses, many medals, a beard and a cigar to become the much cooler than a sailor, dictator. 

We had a wonderful time, how about you guys, how did you celebrate Halloween?

ハロウィンの過ごし方

先週末はハロウィンでしたね。
正直に言うと、これは私にとってそんなに大きなイベントではありませんでした。でも最近ではキッズスクールの小さな子供達のおかげで毎年ハロウィンをお祝いしています。
ケンジントン英会話のキッズスクールでは、講師も生徒さんも仮装をしてレッスンに参加します。1番のお気に入りはスタッフのYukiの、ユニコーンの仮装、とてもクールでした！

今年、私の家族は始めてハロウィンパーティーに行きました。仮装をして、友人の家で飲みました。妻は消防士、息子はピーターパン（とてもとても可愛かった）、娘は海賊そして私は監督になりました。実際のところ、私のコスチュームは海軍の制服でしたが、私はサングラスや沢山のメダル、ひげとタバコをプラスして海軍兵よりずっとイケている監督に扮しました。

私達は素晴らしい時間を過ごすことができました。

Everyday English
Some expressions with “go on”

Prepositions and articles in English can be quite tough, and the verb “go” is a good example of that. Today I’m going to show you some expressions with “go on”.

We say
“go on a trip”.
Ex. I’d love to go on a trip somewhere in Kyushu during the Golden week.

“go on a diet”
Ex. You have put on a lot of weight. I think you should go on a diet.

“go on a date”
Ex. You should probably take a shower before you go on a date, you stink!

“go on a picnic”
Ex. Autumn is a perfect season to go on a picnic in Fukuoka. This weekend we are going to Ohori park.

英語の前置詞と冠詞はとても難しく、動詞”go”を使った表現はその良い例になるでしょう。
今日は、go on を使ったいくつかの表現をここで紹介したいと思います。

go on a trip 旅行に行く
例 I’d love to go on a trip somewhere in Kyushu during the Golden week.
ゴールデンウィークに九州のどこかへ旅行に行きたい。

Go on a diet　ダイエットをする
例 You have put on a lot of weight. I think you should go on a diet.
君はだいぶ太ったようだね。ダイエットをするべきだと思うよ。

go on a date デートに行く
例 You should probably take a shower before you go on a date, you stink!
デートに行く前にシャワーを浴びた方がいいよ、ちょっとくさいよ！

go on a picnic ピクニックに行く
例 Autumn is a perfect season to go on a picnic in Fukuoka. This weekend we are going to Ohori park.
秋は福岡でピクニックに行くのに、ベストシーズンです。今週末、私達は大濠公園へ行く予定です。

Going out

As autumn has arrived and it’s time to take advantage of the cool weather this weekend in our group classes we will be talking about going out. 

We are going to learn many different expressions with go, such as “go out for lunch” , “go for a drive” or “go on a trip” and in the lower level classes this class is an excellent chance to review and practice the basic tenses.

As always in our advanced classes we will have some deeper discussions about going out, nightlife in Fukuoka and how entertainment habits have changed in the recent years.

秋がやって来ました。今週末は涼しい気候を活用して、グループレッスンでは外出について話しましょう。

What we are doing in Kensington
New things in Kensington

As you have probably figured out, we like keeping ourselves busy here in Kensington, busy trying new things, busy trying to improve and this time is no different.
Things that have been happening in Kensington recently include the opening of our adult classroom in Hiraojosui.

We have a super attractive autumn private ticket campaign, where we can offer more intensive courses to our students for a great price, and also offer our group students with short private courses so that they can study and improve certain skills necessary for them to move up a level.

We are preparing to change our line account to the official line so we can improve our services to you with some cool features that official line has compared to the line account we use today. 

We are starting this month our new advanced kindergarten courses for all students that want to enter Futaba GC or any other elementary school immersion program in April 2023. The first advanced kindergarten classes are ending this month and they have been a resounding success, I can’t believe how much our girls have improved in such a short time. We are all so proud of them!

We have started our Eiken courses as of this month about which you can learn more from our resident Eiken experts Denny and Jaimie and many more things. 

With the corona pandemic hopefully gradually in the rearview we are excited for what the future is going to bring!

皆さんお気づきだと思いますが、私達はここケンジントン英会話で、新しい事やより良いサービスのために挑戦する事が好きで、現在も色々な事に忙しくしています。
最近のケンジントン英会話の新しい出来事のひとつは、平尾浄水校で大人のレッスンを開始した事です。

今月には、2023年の4月に雙葉小学校GCコースやその他の小学校の特別コースへの入学を希望されている生徒さんに向けた、上級者幼稚園コースが新しく始まります。
最初の上級者幼稚園コースは今月末に終了し、彼らは大成功を納めています。
この短期間で、多くの少女達がこんなにも上達したことが信じられません。
彼女達の事をとても誇りに思います！

今月から、英検コースも開始しています。英検のエキスパート、デニーとジェイミーから、より多くの事を学べるでしょう。
ここには書ききれない位、その他にも沢山のことに挑戦しています。
コロナも徐々に収まってきており、私達は今後の展開に期待しています！

テスト対策 – TOEFL – How to approach Reading

Hello everyone, I’m Tim and I’m your Kensington resident Toefl expert. Today I will give you some more information about how to approach the TOEFL Reading section.

The Reading Section in TOEFL has 3 or 4 reading passages of about 700 words each. For each passage, there are 10 multiple-choice questions. and you have 54 to 72 minutes to complete the Reading section. That means that you shouldn’t spend any more than 18 minutes on each passage and its related questions.

The more you practice, the more you will find out how much time you generally need to read each passage and how much time you need to answer the questions. 

When approaching the reading section a good idea is to

1. Identify the topic
2. Skim the passage by
   1. taking a glance over the first few sentences
   2. then taking a look at the first sentence of each paragraph and
   3. reading the last paragraph
3. Create an outline 
4. Read the article carefully
   1. keeping brief notes on your outline
   2. not trying to understand everything
5. Read the questions 
6. Scan for keywords and
7. Finally answer the questions

リーディング対策

皆さんこんにちは。

ケンジントン英会話のTOEFLエキスパートのティムです。
今日はTOEFLのリーディング問題のアプローチ方法についての情報をお伝えします。

TOEFLのリーディング問題はそれぞれ700字程度の段落が3つか4つで構成されています。
各段落には10個の○形式の問題があり、54分～72分でリーディングセクションを終わらせなければいけません。つまり、各段落と問題に18分以上かけられない事という事です。

リーディング問題への対策として良い方法は

1. トピックを見極める
2. 段落をざっと読む　
   a.最初のいくつかの文章を流し見する。　
   b.その後、それぞれの段落の最初の文を見る　
   c.最後の段落を読む
3. 概要を立てる
4. 記事を注意深く読む
   a.概要の簡単なメモを取る
   b.全てを理解しようとしない
5. 質問を読む
6. キーワードを走り読みする
7. 最後に問題に解答する。
