とても密度が濃い50分であっという間に時間が過ぎます。
予習前提なので安心して授業に参加できますし、たくさん練習できます。
また、毎回少しずつ自分のできることが増えたと感じられるのもうれしいポイントです！
家について話すときに間違えやすいもの
Since this weekend’s theme is going to be about house hunting ,here are a few things people often get wrong when talking about their homes.
今週のレッスンテーマは「家探し」となっていますので、
First of all the big one. Mansion.
まず最初に、大きいやつですね。「マンション」。
People always tell me that they live in a mansion. This surprised me at first, I knew Japan was a wealthy nation, but “How many mansions could there possibly be?” I thought.
「私は mansion に住んでいます」といつも言われますが、
Mansion really means a very large house with multiple bedrooms often found on an estate in the countryside.
実は、mansion は、田園地方の私有地によく見られ、
What people are really referring to is called a block of flats in the U.K, and an apartment building in the U.S.
ここで実際に話されているのは「アパート」のことで、

What did you do on Sunday?
日曜に何したの？
I cleaned my room.
部屋の掃除をしたよ。
This makes me think that you live with your parents and that you cleaned up your bedroom, of course if you do, then this answer is fine.
この答えを聞いて思い浮かぶのは、両親と暮らしていて、
The word 部屋 is often used in Japanese but for English speakers it gives the image of what I just said above. It doesn’t matter if you live in a one room flat, it’s much easier for English speakers to understand if you say house/place.
「部屋」という言葉は、日本語ではよく使われますが、

日曜に何したの？
I cleaned up my house/ place.
うちの掃除をしたよ。
Living = Living room
リビング = リビングルーム（居間）
When describing their homes people often say living, instead of living room.
自宅の説明をするとき、living room の代わりに living と言うのをよく聞きます。
The T.V is in the living. X
テレビは生きている人々の中にあります。
The T.V is in the living room.
テレビはリビング（ルーム）にあります。
Also, when we talk about going home please try to remember that the preposition to is not necessary.
また、帰宅の話をするとき、前置詞の to は不要だということを忘れないで下さいね。

家にに帰るの。
I’m going home.
家に帰るの。

As Jaimie knows very well, and probably you don’t, I really like making lists of things. Usually my lists and efforts to compile them are largely ignored by the general population but I think my blog provides me with an excellent medium to continue my good work. I’m generally very keen on films so it probably makes sense to start with a list of my favourite films.
ジェイミー先生はよく知っていて、おそらく皆様はご存知ないでしょうが、私はリストを作るのがとても好きです。リストとそれを作るのに費やした努力は、大抵の人々にはほとんど相手にされないことが多いのですが。ブログは、私が良い仕事を続けるのに大いに役立ってくれることと思いますし、私は大体において映画に夢中になるたちですので、お気に入りの映画のリストから始めるのも、おそらくご理解いただけることでしょう。
5) There’s something about Mary
第５位「メリーに首ったけ」
This is my favourite comedy. I think comedy is incredibly hard to do right. There are countless great action films, thrillers or science fiction films, but there are very very few great comedies. “There’s something about Mary” is one of them I believe. I’ve watched it a million times and still find it hilarious. Matt Dillon gave a comedic performance for the ages.
お気に入りのコメディです。コメディは、うまくやるのがものすごく難しいものだと思います。 アクション・スリラー・SFの秀作は数え切れないほどありますが、コメディの傑作というのは本当に極めて少ないです。「メリーに首ったけ」は、そうした傑作の1つでしょう。何度も何度も観ていますが、今でもまだ面白いと思えます。マット・ディロンがコメディアンとして稀代の名演技を披露しています。
4) The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
第４位「ライフ・アクアティック」
I could pick any Wes Anderson film really. I love the guy, I love his work, his vision his refusal to do things by the standards set by others. There is in my mind one word that defines his films and that’s “quirky” but there is much, so much more to them than just quirk. Layer over layer of human emotions and vulnerabilities exposed in his uncompromising visual style. In my mind the most visionary of today’s directors.
ウェス・アンダーソン監督の映画なら本当に何でも選べますね。 彼とその作品、ビジョン、他人の基準で動くことを拒否する姿勢が大好きです。彼の映画を言い表そうとして心に浮かぶのは、「奇抜」の一言ですが、その一言だけでは言い表せないものがもっとたくさん、彼の映画にはあります。彼の妥協のない撮り方・見せ方からあらわになる、人間の感情のひだともろさ。現代の監督達の中では最も先見性・独創性のある人だと思います。
3) Evil Dead 2
第３位「死霊のはらわた2」
Hilarious. Can’t wait for my daughter to be over 14 or something so I can start watching it at home again.
笑えます。娘が14歳より上かそのあたりの歳になるのが待ち切れません。そうすればまた家で観られますからね。（注：「死霊のはらわた2」はR指定映画）
2) The Godfather
第２位「ゴッドファーザー」
A perfect film. Perfect direction, perfect screenplay, perfect delivery by perfect actors, perfect costumes, perfect score. A perfect process of memorable scenes. The best film ever made.
パーフェクト。監督、脚本、俳優、せりふ回し、衣装、音楽、どれをとっても完璧な映画です。記憶に残るシーンがこの上なく見事に綴られていくさま。最高傑作です。
1) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
第１位「エターナル・サンシャイン」
A film that plays and feels like a dream. A film that deconstructs with you while playing videos from your childhood. I read somewhere that this is the movie playing around the clock in heaven and I totally agree. (Disclaimer: I don’t believe in heaven.) I can’t overstate how great I think this film is.
夢のように流れ、夢のように感じられる映画です。子供時代からの映像が流れている間に、映画から切り離されます。これは天国で絶え間なく流れている映画、とあるのを何かで読んだことがあり、これには全く同感です。（おことわり：私は天国を信じていませんが。）この映画をどんなに素晴らしいと思っているか、いくら言っても言い過ぎにはなりません。
Special mentions: Groundhog Day, Totoro.

まず1人目の生徒さんは、ちひろさん（レベル1）です。ちひろさんは、いつも笑顔でショートカットがとてもお似合いな方です。レッスン中もちひろさんの明るい声が聞こえてきて、楽しくレッスンを受けられているんだなあと嬉しく思います。そんなちひろさんの声をいただきました！
少人数なので、和気あいあいとした雰囲気の中、楽しく英語を学べています。
両先生とも優しく丁寧に教えて下さるので質問もしやすく、毎回あっという間に時間が過ぎてしまいます(^^)

As I’m sure most of you are aware yesterday was the birthday of one of the founding fathers of our school, I don’t want to name any name’s but it was mine. (Jaimie).

I noticed yesterday that a lot of people said congratulations to me and I was confused as I hadn’t put any effort at all into becoming one year older, if anything I’m trying to reverse the process.

One of the difficulties of learning a language is trying not to think in your own so instead of saying congratulations, which is often used in Japanese, it’s better to simply say…

You might see ‘Happy Wedding’ on greetings cards in Japan, but this is something we never say as a greeting, it would always be congratulations.
Also, sometimes people make the mistake of saying
日本では、グリーティングカードに「Happy Wedding」
また、このような間違いも時々聞かれます。
I went home at happy new year.
よいお年を に帰省しました。
Remember happy new year is a greeting and not used to describe the time.
Happy new yearは挨拶表現で、新年という時を表す表現ではないので、

Lastly, since I’m feeling a bit old today here are a couple of idioms to talk about age.

ティムの夏を切り取った写真をいくつか。
This summer was incredibly busy for me. In addition to all my work for Kensington, in July I opened my new business orientated school Windsor Business Club. On the left you can see the sign with the Windsor Eikaiwa logo outside the classroom. Working on 3 schools at the same time keeps me very busy but it’s good work and I’m happy.
この夏は私にとって信じられない程忙しいものでした。ケンジントンの仕事に加え、ビジネス向け英会話スクール、ウィンザー・ビジネスクラブを7月に開校しました。左の写真で、教室の外にある看板に、ウィンザー英会話のロゴが描かれているのをご覧下さい。同時に3スクールの仕事をしていて非常に忙しいですが、よい仕事ができて幸せです。
Running your own businesses in a way ensures that you are never truly on holiday, though it isn’t without its benefits, one of which is that I can, to a certain extent, decide my own schedule. That I did in July when my family and I went to a Ryokan in Saga for a couple of relaxing days. My daughter (pictured) especially enjoyed being on holiday, bathing in hot springs and sporting a cute Yukata.
自ら事業を経営するということは、見方によれば、もはや本当の意味での休みは取れないということになります。とはいえ悪い面ばかりではなく、良い面の1つに、ある程度自分の予定を自分で決められるというのがあります。ということで、7月に家族で佐賀の旅館に行き、2 、3日のんびり過ごしました。とりわけ私の娘（写真）は、温泉に入ったり、かわいい浴衣を着てみせたり、と、休日を楽しんでいました。
Summer, besides beach going, swimming and firework displays (none of which I have experienced this summer unfortunately, through a combination of work and ghastly weather) is also a perfect time for reading. A picture of my summer reading is on the right. I’m a very frequent Amazon customer and I was very interested to read how the company is run and how it survived the dot com bubble burst. It was a very enlightening book on a company which offers great service to its customers but has grown to be too powerful for its own good (and possibly ours). Currently I’m reading Margaret Thatcher’s biography, an insightful read on her rather unlikely rise to power and her turbulent years in office.
夏は、海に行ったり泳ぎや花火大会を楽しめたりする上に（あいにくこの夏は、仕事とひどい天気とで、どれにも行っていないのですが）、読書にも最適な時季です。右の写真は、夏に読んだものです。私はアマゾンの常連客で、アマゾンの経営手法や、ネット企業バブルが崩壊する中アマゾンがどう生き残ったのかということに、非常に興味を持ってこの本を読みました。顧客には素晴らしいサービスを提供する一方、自らを利する為に（そしてともすると私達自身を利する為に）あまりに強大に成長し過ぎてしまった、アマゾンに関する極めて啓発的な本した。今はマーガレット・サッチャーの伝記を読んでいるところで、思いがけず権力の座に就き、首相執務室で波乱の歳月を送った彼女の一代記は、洞察に満ちたものです。
ジェイミー先生の夏休み
A big thanks to all the wonderful Kensington staff and teachers for covering my summer holiday. My crafty plan to escape the Obon rush and enjoy the delights of Fukuoka city in the summer was foiled by mother nature who decided to give me a week of uninterrupted rain.(Much to Tim sensei’s amusement I’m sure.)
素晴らしいケンジントンスタッフと先生の皆さん、夏休みで私がいなかった分をカバーしてくれて大いに感謝しています。お盆ラッシュを避け福岡市内で夏を満喫しよう、という私の巧妙な計画は、私に１週間絶え間なく降り続ける雨を与えよう、とお決めになった母なる自然の力で、おじゃんになりました。（ティム先生は私の不幸をさぞ面白がっていることでしょうねえ。）
Luckily there were a few indoor kids events こびとピクニック and the 絵本museum so I had a chance to spend some time with my kids which was nice.
ついていることに、子供向けの室内イベント、「こびとピクニック」と「絵本ミュージアム」がありました。自分の子供達と一緒に過ごす時間が取れて、よかったです。
Hope there is better weather from now on.
これからは、よいお天気だといいですね。

間違いやすい服の呼び方
Clothes.
服。
People always seem surprised when I tell them that jumper means jacket in British English.
There a quite a few differences in what we call our clothes, here a few of the most common mistakes.
日本語の「ジャンパー」は、
Jumper= Jacket. ( In English jumper means sweater)
ジャンパー=Jacket。（
One piece= Dress
ワンピース=Dress
Trainer= Hooded top
トレーナー=Hooded top
Pumps= High Heels
パンプス=High Heels
Muffler= Scarf
マフラー=Scarf
ワイシャツ= Shirt
There are also differences between British and American English
イギリス英語とアメリカ英語にも、違いがあります。
For example in the U.K pants, in the U.K this means underwear but in the U.S it means ズボン。In the U.K they are called trousers. Also I talked about high heels before in the U.S they are known as pumps.
例えば、pantsというと、
Wear.
着る。
I bought some new wear last weekend. X
この前の週末に、新しい「着」を買ったんだ。X
I bought some new clothes last weekend.O
この前の週末に、新しい服を買ったんだ。
I often hear people refer to clothes as wear , but it’s quite unnatural. True we do talk about sportswear , formal wear etc. but in general they are known as clothes. Please remember that clothes itself is a plural. There is no such word as CLOTHESES.
服がwearと呼ばれるのをよく聞きますが、かなり不自然です。
Pronunciation can also be difficult to because katakana spelling of ワイシャツ which ends in a su sound it makes it sound like a plural in English. Try to end on the t itself if you want to talk about the singular noun shirt.
発音が難しいということもありますね。「ワイシャツ」
