Seasons Greetings

Many Kensington students use English at work, to communicate with clients all over the world. We may not be meeting each other in person, but it’s still nice to send a short message to wish them well at this time of year. So how do you say Happy Holidays in a business email?

Well, simple greetings like, “Season’s Greetings” or “Happy Holidays” is appropriate. You can also add “I hope the season is treating you well. I wanted to thank you for your business this year and wish you and your team a Happy New Year.”

Remember, you don’t need to write a lot or go into great detail. A short message is fine and will be appreciated. If you are writing to your boss or other team members, here are a few extra phrases you can steal:

• “Thank you for all your hard work and dedication this year.”
• “Thank you for inspiring me to do my best every day.”
• “Wishing a wonderful Christmas to a wonderful mentor!”
• “Our team wouldn’t be the same without you.”
• “Thank you for another outstanding year!”

Study Advice How to make most of your lessons
learn about the culture

One of the best things about learning a foreign language is that you can also learn about the culture that comes with the language. Christmas in western culture is so different from how it is celebrated in Japan. If you have the chance before your Christmas classes, I recommend having a look online and trying to find out about some unfamiliar traditions that your teachers might often do at this time of year. Why not prepare some questions for your teacher, and ask them about their family home and traditions, or how they celebrated Christmas when they were young. For example, my mother has some very particular Christmas routines – she loves Christmas but my father doesn’t! Ask me in class and I’ll tell you all about it! And when I was young, I used to always go “sledging” with my friends in the park near my house. Have you heard of sledging?

I’ll be sure to give you all my sledging secrets in class!

Talk about myself/my hometown/my country
New Year celebrations in Edinburgh

As many of you know, my hometown is Edinburgh – and it’s really famous for its New Year celebrations. We actually call new year “Hogmanay” in Scotland. On December 31st, there is a big street party in the main street in the city. The roads are closed and the street is just filled with people. There are bands playing loud music on the stages and it’s so packed it’s hard to move. Of course, it’s very cold in Scotland at the end of the year. Everyone is usually freezing, and wearing a really big winter jacket, hat, scarf and gloves! However, this doesn’t stop people from celebrating. At midnight we have a big countdown from 10 to 1 – everyone joins in! On the stroke of midnight, we can enjoy one of the biggest fireworks displays in the world from Edinburgh Castle. Then everyone hugs and kisses each other – friends, family and strangers too – and shouts “HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!” After the fireworks, everyone heads inside to the pub. We sing Auld Lang Syne and raise a glass to welcome the new year.

If you ever have the chance to visit Scotland, and can bear the cold weather, I definitely recommend going there for New Year – it’s a party like no other!

私の出身地、私自身～講師の自己紹介
エディンバラでの年越し

多くの方がご存知の通り、私の出身地はエディンバラです。そしてエディンバラは新年のお祝いがとても有名です。実は、スコットランドでは、新年のことを「Hogmanay」と呼んでいます。

12月31日には、街のメイン通りでは大きなストリートパーティーが開催されます。道路では車は通行止めになり、人々で溢れます。ステージではバンドが大きな音で演奏し、ぎゅうぎゅうに混雑して動けないほどです。もちろん、年末のスコットランドはとても寒いです。人々は皆寒さで凍えていて、とて大きな冬用のジャケットを着て、帽子、マフラー、手袋をしています。でも、そんな凍えるほどの寒さですら、人々が新年を祝うのを止めることはできません。深夜には、皆が参加して、10秒前からカウントダウンします！時計の針がちょうど深夜0時を告げると、世界でも最大規模の大きさであるエディンバラ城からの花火を楽しめるのです。
それから人々は友達や家族、見知らぬ人ともハグやキスをして「ハッピーニューイヤー!!!」と叫びます。
花火が終わると人々はパブへ向かいます。私達はAuld Lang Syne(蛍の光)を歌い、グラスを掲げて新年を迎えます。

もしあなたがスコットランドを訪れる機会があって、寒い気候に耐えられるなら、新年に行ってみることを強くお勧めします、その他のパーティーとは全く違うものですよ！

“Happy Holidays” Vs. “Merry Christmas”

“Happy Holidays” Vs. “Merry Christmas”

These two phrases are used a lot in December! Everyone wishes each other well for the holiday period at the end of the year. In the UK, most people greet each other with “Merry Christmas” on Christmas Day. Even strangers passing in the street, or staff talking to customers in shops, will use this phrase. However, in America, did you know that most people don’t say this, and actually usually say “Happy Holidays”? You see, Christmas is a Christian holiday. However, America has a wide range of nationalities and religions – most US citizens aren’t Christian and don’t celebrate Christian traditions. Therefore, in the US and Canada, most people wish each other “Happy Holidays” – because this phrase is much more inclusive. It includes everyone, no matter what nationality or religion people are. Of course, it also includes all the people who don’t associate with any religion too. So, if you are spending any time over in the States at Christmas and New Year, remember to wish everyone “Happy Holidays!”

これらの2つのフレーズは12月にとても多く使われます！皆が年末にお互いに良い休暇を過ごせるように願うのです。イギリスではほとんどの人がクリスマス当日には「メリークリスマス」と挨拶し合います。知らない人達同士が道ですれ違う時や、お店のスタッフがお客様に対してでさえ、実際にこのフレーズを使います。

しかしながらアメリカでは、ほとんどの人がこのフレーズを言わず、実際には「ハッピーホリデー」と言うのを知っていますか？見ての通り、クリスマスとはキリスト教の祝日です。しかしアメリカには幅広い国籍と宗教が存在していて、多くの人々はキリスト教徒ではなく、キリスト教の伝統をお祝いしません。そのためアメリカやカナダでは多くの人々がお互いの「ハッピーホリデー」を願うのです。

このフレーズはより包括的で、国籍や宗教に関わらず全ての人々に使えます。もちろんどんな宗教にも属さない人も。

もしあなたがクリスマスや年越しをアメリカで過ごす時には皆の「ハッピーホリデー」を願うことを覚えておいて下さいね！

Christmas and New Years

This week’s subject is Christmas and New Years. We’re going to be talking about all the things we love about the holiday season. First, we’re going to talk about the various traditions that are popular in both western and Japanese culture at this time of year. Also, we’re going to share our habits and routines – so remember to come to class prepared to talk about what you usually do over the holidays. Where do you usually go? What do you usually eat? Do you decorate your house? Do you usually exchange cards and gifts? 

We’re also going to talk about how we used to celebrate Christmas and New Year when we were younger, and our favourite experiences and presents. 

Western and Japanese holidays at this time of year are so different, so let’s have fun comparing them and learning about each other’s holiday traditions!

What we are doing in Kensington
Christmas holiday

At this time of year in Kensington, we are all looking forward to the Christmas holiday season. For many teachers, the celebrating starts on December 1st – as we start to count down the days until Christmas Day. Like many companies in the UK, we are closed for 2 weeks over Christmas and New Year. It gives everyone a chance to spend time with family, relax and re-energize for the new year.

Of course, the holidays are fun. However, at Kensington we also need to be ready for starting back in January. So these days we are preparing all our classes, materials and schedules for not only this week, but all of January too! It’s a lot of work, but it’s best to be organized and get everything done now so we can enjoy the holidays.

ケンジントンでのできごと – クリスマス＆ニューイヤーホリデー

この時期になると、ケンジントンでは皆がクリスマス休暇を楽しみにしています。

多くの講師は12月1日からお祝いを始め、クリスマスまでの日にちをカウントダウンし始めます。多くのイギリスの会社と同じように、私達もクリスマスと年越しに2週間休業します。この休暇は皆に家族と過ごす時間やリラックスして新しい年に向けてエネルギーチャージする機会を与えてくれます。

もちろん、休暇は楽しいものです。しかしながらケンジントンでは、1月に学校へ戻った時の準備も始めなくてはいけません。

そのため近頃では、今月だけではなく1月すべてのレッスンや教材、スケジュールリングの準備も行っています！それはたくさんの仕事量ですが、きちんと成立させるためには最良の方法ですし、すべてを終わらせてしまえば休暇を楽しめるのです。
