Hello there everyone,

As you may have noticed, today is Christmas Day! Merry Christmas from everyone at Kensington Eikaiwa, it’s been a pleasure teaching you all this year too and I am very much looking forward to seeing you all again in the new year.

Each family has its own Christmas traditions, at home with my dad we always start the day off with a huge fried breakfast and a strong vodka and orange juice, but in my house we start the day with music!

I play this song every Christmas morning, partly to tease my wife, who isn’t a hip hop fan, partly because my kids love it, and also because it reminds me of Christmas in the UK because it is featured in the film “Die Hard” which is often on TV in the winter holidays and is one of my favourites.

皆さんお気づきだと思いますが、今日はクリスマスです。

ケンジントン英会話より、メリークリスマス！今年1年皆さんに教えることができて、とても嬉しかったです。そして、新しい年にまたお会いできることを、とても楽しみにしています。

どのご家庭にも、それぞれ独自のクリスマスの楽しみ方があると思います。私達の家では父親と共に、こんがり焼けたたっぷりの朝ごはんと、強めのウォッカとオレンジジュースで休日が始まります。でも私の家では、音楽と共に1日を始めます。

私は毎年クリスマスの朝にこの曲を演奏します。ヒップホップファンではない妻にとっては少し意地悪で、子ども達はこの曲が好きですし、私にUKでのクリスマスを思い出させるのです。なぜなら冬休みになるとよくテレビで放映される大好きなダイハードで、この曲が使われていたからです。

Here is a nice jolly idiom for you to put you in a festive mood!
To “light up like a Christmas tree” means to look or seem very happy about something and be all smiles.

“Yes, she light up like a Christmas tree when I told her you were coming over for Christmas.”

Hello again!

I honestly can’t believe that I’m writing this again, Christmas really seems to come around more and more quickly every year! I wonder if you feel the same…?

The topic for this weekend is Christmas and New Year at our schools in Yakuin, Nishijin, Akasaka, and online.

We will be talking about Christmas and new year traditions, how you usually spend time at the end of the year, what you did last year, and how you plan on spending the holiday season this year. In the higher level classes we will be discussing some of the differences between Christmas and new year in Japan and overseas and how the celebration has changed over time.

Sounds pretty good to me!

正直、またこれを書いているのが信じられません。毎年クリスマスがやって来るのがどんどん早くなっている様に感じます！

今週末、薬院校、西新校、赤坂校、オンラインでのレッスントピックは「クリスマスとニューイヤー」です。

クリスマスと新年の伝統にや、年末の過ごし方、昨年はどうだったか？そして今年の休暇をどの様に過ごす予定かなどについて話す予定です。
上級者クラスでは、クリスマスと新年について、日本と海外での違いや、時代と共にこれらのお祝いの仕方の変化についてディスカッションをしましょう。

“Happy Holidays” Vs. “Merry Christmas”

“Happy Holidays” Vs. “Merry Christmas”

These two phrases are used a lot in December! Everyone wishes each other well for the holiday period at the end of the year. In the UK, most people greet each other with “Merry Christmas” on Christmas Day. Even strangers passing in the street, or staff talking to customers in shops, will use this phrase. However, in America, did you know that most people don’t say this, and actually usually say “Happy Holidays”? You see, Christmas is a Christian holiday. However, America has a wide range of nationalities and religions – most US citizens aren’t Christian and don’t celebrate Christian traditions. Therefore, in the US and Canada, most people wish each other “Happy Holidays” – because this phrase is much more inclusive. It includes everyone, no matter what nationality or religion people are. Of course, it also includes all the people who don’t associate with any religion too. So, if you are spending any time over in the States at Christmas and New Year, remember to wish everyone “Happy Holidays!”

これらの2つのフレーズは12月にとても多く使われます！皆が年末にお互いに良い休暇を過ごせるように願うのです。イギリスではほとんどの人がクリスマス当日には「メリークリスマス」と挨拶し合います。知らない人達同士が道ですれ違う時や、お店のスタッフがお客様に対してでさえ、実際にこのフレーズを使います。

しかしながらアメリカでは、ほとんどの人がこのフレーズを言わず、実際には「ハッピーホリデー」と言うのを知っていますか？見ての通り、クリスマスとはキリスト教の祝日です。しかしアメリカには幅広い国籍と宗教が存在していて、多くの人々はキリスト教徒ではなく、キリスト教の伝統をお祝いしません。そのためアメリカやカナダでは多くの人々がお互いの「ハッピーホリデー」を願うのです。

このフレーズはより包括的で、国籍や宗教に関わらず全ての人々に使えます。もちろんどんな宗教にも属さない人も。

もしあなたがクリスマスや年越しをアメリカで過ごす時には皆の「ハッピーホリデー」を願うことを覚えておいて下さいね！

This week’s subject is Christmas and New Years. We’re going to be talking about all the things we love about the holiday season. First, we’re going to talk about the various traditions that are popular in both western and Japanese culture at this time of year. Also, we’re going to share our habits and routines – so remember to come to class prepared to talk about what you usually do over the holidays. Where do you usually go? What do you usually eat? Do you decorate your house? Do you usually exchange cards and gifts?

We’re also going to talk about how we used to celebrate Christmas and New Year when we were younger, and our favourite experiences and presents.

Western and Japanese holidays at this time of year are so different, so let’s have fun comparing them and learning about each other’s holiday traditions!

What we are doing in Kensington
Christmas holiday

At this time of year in Kensington, we are all looking forward to the Christmas holiday season. For many teachers, the celebrating starts on December 1st – as we start to count down the days until Christmas Day. Like many companies in the UK, we are closed for 2 weeks over Christmas and New Year. It gives everyone a chance to spend time with family, relax and re-energize for the new year.

Of course, the holidays are fun. However, at Kensington we also need to be ready for starting back in January. So these days we are preparing all our classes, materials and schedules for not only this week, but all of January too! It’s a lot of work, but it’s best to be organized and get everything done now so we can enjoy the holidays.

ケンジントンでのできごと – クリスマス＆ニューイヤーホリデー

この時期になると、ケンジントンでは皆がクリスマス休暇を楽しみにしています。

多くの講師は12月1日からお祝いを始め、クリスマスまでの日にちをカウントダウンし始めます。多くのイギリスの会社と同じように、私達もクリスマスと年越しに2週間休業します。この休暇は皆に家族と過ごす時間やリラックスして新しい年に向けてエネルギーチャージする機会を与えてくれます。

もちろん、休暇は楽しいものです。しかしながらケンジントンでは、1月に学校へ戻った時の準備も始めなくてはいけません。

そのため近頃では、今月だけではなく1月すべてのレッスンや教材、スケジュールリングの準備も行っています！それはたくさんの仕事量ですが、きちんと成立させるためには最良の方法ですし、すべてを終わらせてしまえば休暇を楽しめるのです。
