What we are doing in Kensington
The hectic times are over (temporarily)

January to the end of April were some seriously busy times in Kensington! We organised our new kids school in JosuiMachi, looked for, interviewed, hired and trained our new staff and we are very glad to report that all the tasks above have been completed successfully.

Our new school is doing very well and is filling up and our new teachers and staff have been almost fully acclimatized to our way of doing things. 

Now it’s time for our next focus, one of the things that we would like to do is know more about how our students think. What would you like us to concentrate more on or improve? Is there anything you think that we could be doing better? If so, please let us know in the classroom to me, Jaimie and Keiko or by line anytime.

大忙しの期間を(一時的に)終えて

ケンジントンでは、1月から4月末まで、本当に忙しかったです！
新しい浄水町のキッズスクールのオーガナイズや、新しいスタッフの募集、面接と採用と新人スタッフのトレーニング…。そして上記のタスクは完璧に成功したことをご報告できるのを嬉しく思います。

新しい学校はとても上手く行っており満員となっています。
新しい講師とスタッフも私達のやり方に十分に慣れて来ました。

今はまた、次の事に取り掛かる時です。
やりたい事のひとつは、生徒さんの考えをもっと知りたいという事です。
もっと力を入れて欲しい事、改善して欲しい点は何ですか？
私達がより良くなるために、何かできる事があると思いますか？
もしあれば、レッスンやLineで、私やジェイミー、ケイコにいつでも伝えて下さい。

私達は皆さんが考えている事を聞くのが楽しみです！

Study Advice / How to make most of your lesson
 Tie English to your passions!

The language study advice I’d like to share with you (share  because I use it myself) is; Tie/ connect/integrate English or any other language you’re learning to your passions. Integrating the language you’re learning into something you love doing in your free time or profession is fun and keeps you motivated. Is cooking your passion? Go ahead watch cooking shows/videos in English. Prepare a short presentation, a photo etc about your “passion” and share it with your teacher in class.

“Mobile Money”

Have you ever heard of Mobile Money? Well, it’s a technology that allows people to receive, store(save) and spend money using a mobile phone. You don’t need a bank account or a credit card to use Mobile money. All you need is a registered mobile phone. It’s easy to use, safe and can be used anywhere there is a mobile phone signal. It’s very popular in Africa. In fact in my home country Uganda, more than 30 million people( Mar 2020) use mobile money to buy and sell things, pay taxes, pay bills, send money to relatives, get loans and other financial services. All thanks to the wonderful magic of the internet!

これは人々が携帯電話を使ってお金の受け取り、貯金、支払いなどができる技術です。
モバイルマネーを使うために必要なのは登録した携帯電話のみ、銀行口座やクレジットカードは必要ありません。
使い方はとても簡単で安全、しかも携帯電話の電波が届く場所であればどこでも使用することができるのです。

モバイルマネーはアフリカではとても人気です。実際に私の出身国ウガンダでは、3000万人以上の人々が、物の売買、税金や公共料金の支払い、親族への仕送りや、ローン等々の金融サービスに使用しています（2020年3月時点）。

すべてインターネットの素晴らしい魔法のおかげです！

Sticking to the internet theme this week, our everyday English word/phrase is troll
Troll can be a noun a troll and a verb troll, trolling
A troll is a person who posts mean/nasty or very negative comment(s) in an online discussion/comment section etc, to annoy as many people as possible.

A: Somebody has posted a really nasty comment on my blog!

B: Don’t worry about it Moriko, I think it’s  just a teenager trolling you.

今週のテーマ、インターネットに関連させ、今日の日常英会話の単語/フレーズは「troll」です。
これは、名詞ではtroll、動詞ではtrollingとなります。
troll とは、意地悪で不愉快な、またはとてもネガティブな発言をインターネット上のコメント欄などに投稿し、多くの人々を不快にさせる人のことを言います。

A: Somebody has posted a really nasty comment on my blog!
（私のブログにすごく不快なコメントをした人がいるの！）

B: Don’t worry about it Moriko, I think it’s  just a teenager trolling you.
（モリ子、気にしないで。若者のただのコメント荒らしだと思うよ）

What we are doing in Kensington
Improving quality of our lessons

Hello there, mother nature has started painting the world in green, preparing it for the bright summer days.  Greenery is a sign of life, isn’t it?  

At Kensington Eikaiwa, we continue to make an effort to make our lessons as student-centered as possible. That is to say, students should speak much more than the teacher in a lesson. Our students should of course  practice the target language and have fun. Our Team sessions about lesson evaluations are guided by those three basic elements in addition to many other ideas.

Hey guys! 

This week’s business term is USP (Unique selling point/proposition).
This term refers to a unique part of a product or business that separates a company from its competitors.

For example The North Face company leads with the slogan ‘products that last a lifetime’. This guarantee of quality and longevity is meant to separate them from their competitor.
Used in a sentence we might say ‘I really like The North Face’s USP’. Or for your own company, ‘this is what separates us from the rest, this is our USP’.

今回は、企業が競合他社との差別化を図るために行っている、製品やビジネスにおける独自性についてご紹介します。

例えばノースフェイス社は 「products that last a lifetime (一生物の商品)」と言うスローガンを掲げています。この品質と製品寿命への保証は、競合他社との差別化になっています。

文章の中では、
「I really like The North Face’s USP（私はノースフェイスのUSPが大好きです）」
の様に、またはあなたの会社では
「this is what separates us from the rest, this is our USP（他と差別化するのはこれです、これが私達のUSPです）」
の様に使うことができるでしょう。

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Prepare, practice, review

At Kensington we provide lots of materials to prepare for class: flashcards, videos, blogs, etc. Those materials all serve the lesson where we can practice what students have studied. After the lesson students take pictures of the whiteboard, or they get a document from online lessons, which outlines what we did in the lesson for future reference. And in all lessons there is a part for review of the previous lesson.

I wanted to outline the processes that we do in order to teach and learn English. It’s easy to forget about one aspect of learning, or to just focus on the lesson time, especially with our busy lives. But every part is very important for learning English. A student that thoroughly prepares for the lesson will have more time to practice using it in the lesson, a student that thoroughly reviews their lesson has a much better chance at retaining that information and using it properly in the future. 

Sometimes it’s good to take a moment to reflect on how much time we’re dedicating to each part, to see if we’re giving preparation, practice and review enough time.

予習、練習そして復習

ケンジントン英会話では、レッスンの予習のためにたくさんの教材を提供しています。フラッシュカード、ビデオ、ブログなどなど。生徒さんはこれらで学んだことを、レッスンで練習することができるのでとても役に立ちます。

レッスンで行ったことの概要を後から参照するために、レッスンの最後ではホワイトボードの写真を撮れますし、オンラインレッスンの場合は書類データを貰うこともできます。
そして、すべてのレッスンで、前回のレッスンの復習を行います。

英語を教え、学ぶために、その「過程」について大まかに述べたいと思います。
これは特に忙しい生活の中では、学習するうちに忘れてしまいやすく、レッスンの時間にだけ注目されてしまいがちな点でもあります。
しかし、英語学習にとっては全ての過程が大切なのです。
レッスンに向けて徹底的に予習する事で、レッスン中にそれを使う練習の時間をより多く取る事ができるでしょうし、徹底的に復習する事で、学んだ事を維持し将来きちんと使う事ができるでしょう。
時々は、予習、練習そして復習それぞれのパートにどの位の時間を費やしていて、十分な時間が取れているかどうかを検証してみる時間を取るといいでしょう。

Talk about myself/my hometown/my country
Chelmsford

I am from the city of Chelmsford. I have told this to many students and it’s often meant with understandable, visible confusion, as it is quite difficult to pronounce for students.

It must sound odd to students, and it should, because it is a little odd. Or at least the first part is. ‘Chelmsford’ is actually a mix of two words ‘Ceolmaer’ and ‘Ford’. ‘Ceolmaer’ was probably the name of an important tribal chief or king a long time ago.

The second part, ‘ford’ is a crossable part of a river not so commonly used now in English, since bridges are everywhere. But it is very common in place names in England, some people might be familiar with the city ‘Oxford’ in England, which shares half of the same meaning as my home city.

So if you see or hear of a city that ends in ‘-ford’ in England, chances are that it was near a river.

今まで多くの生徒さんにこれを伝えましたが、かなり発音が難しいので、時々困惑されるのは理解できます。
生徒さん達にとって、この響きは奇妙に違いありません、なぜなら実際に少し奇妙だからです。少なくとも最初の部分は。
実は「Chelmsford」は 「Ceolmaer」と「Ford」という2つの単語の組み合わせです。 「Ceolmaer」は恐らくずっと昔の重要な長官や王の名前です。
2つめの部分「ford」は川を渡ることができる部分、という意味ですが、現在はどこにでも橋があるので、あまり一般的な英語ではありません。
イギリスにある「Oxford」という街の名前としてよくご存知の方もいるかもしれませんね。これも、半分は私の街と同様の意味を持っています。

もしあなたがイギリスで「-ford」で終わる街を見たり聞いたりしたら、きっとそこは川の近くにあった可能性がありますよ。
