Describing nature

Many students like to say things like: ‘the scenery is beautiful in Hokkaido’ ‘there is a lot of nature in Hokkaido’. The English in these sentences is correct and I’m quite used to hearing them now, but I remember when I first came to Japan that it sounded odd, and unnatural to me. scenery’ are not so commonly used in everyday conversation, at least in England. I’m more used to hearing things like ‘it’s beautiful in ______’ or ‘the ocean was stunning’.

I’ll talk about New Zealand to give some examples. I went there 9 years ago and I was blown away, there are so many incredible waterfalls and stunning mountains.

As I said ‘nature’ and ‘scenery’ are both good words to use in some situations, but the examples I used just feel more natural to me when describing places.

自然についての表現

多くの生徒さんはこんな事を話すのが好きです。
「the scenery is beautiful in Hokkaido 」
「there is a lot of nature in Hokkaido 」

これらは英語としては正しいですし、すごく良く聞く文です。でも初めて日本に来てこれらの表現を聞いた時、奇妙で不自然に感じたことを覚えています。　

少なくともイギリスでは「nature」と「scenery」いう単語は日常会話ではそこまで一般的に使われていないと思います。
「it’s beautiful in ______」や「the ocean was stunning」という表現の方がより多く耳にしました。

ニュージーランドで例を挙げてみます。
I went there 9 years ago and I was blown away, there are so many incredible waterfalls and stunning mountains.
（9年前、私はニュージーランドに行き、感動しました。そこには、とても感動的な滝や見事な山々があります。）
先に述べた様に「nature」と「scenery」は共に、いくつかの状況で使うには良い単語です。でも場所を表現する時には、私が挙げた例の方がより自然に感じられます。

The BEST English Lesson!

Hey guys,

This week’s topic is ‘The Best English Lesson’.
We’ll be covering two big parts of english in detail: comparatives and superlatives. Comparatives are used to compare (I am older than my sister), and superlatives are reserved for the best and the worst (I am the most handsome member of my family).
Both are super useful as we love to compare things, and talk about the best and worst things in England.

やあ皆さん

今週のレッスントピックは「最も良い英語のレッスン」です。
英語には、2つの大きなパート、詳しく言うと、比較級と最上級があります。

比較級は、何かと比較する為(I am older than my sister / 私は妹よりも年上です）に使われ、最上級は最も良い物と最も悪い物(I am the most handsome member of my family / 家族の中で私が最もハンサムです ) のために使います。
イギリスでは、人々は物事を比較したり、最高の物と最低の物について話すのが大好きなので、この2つはとても便利です。
