Netflix

【Robin

Netflix

The Big Lebowski has become a cult classic.”

I think that movie is really underrated. More people should watch it!”

Everyone said that movie was amazing, but I thought it was overrated.”

The movie was really unsettling. I couldn’t stop thinking about it afterward.”

It was an action-packed movie from beginning to end!”

The movie was absolutely epic! The visuals were incredible.”

(In a good way / In a bad way):

“That movie was really strange, but in a good way!”

“The ending was surprising, but in a bad way. It didn’t make any sense!”

Cinema: From Netflix to Cult Classics

Hello everyone! Today I’d like to talk about movies and how I enjoy watching them. While some people love going to the cinema, others prefer relaxing at home and throwing on a good movie. I’ll also share a little about my favorite types of movies, my interest in cult cinema, and some useful English expressions for talking about films.

How Often Do I Go to the Cinema?

Ever since the pandemic, I haven’t really gone to the cinema very often. I got so used to watching movies at home that going to the cinema just isn’t something I regularly do anymore. These days, I probably go about once a year, usually when there’s a new movie coming out that I really want to see.

The last time I went to the cinema was to watch F1, starring Brad Pitt. I went to the movie theater at AEON Mall Fukuoka to see it, and it was definitely the kind of movie that’s worth watching on the big screen. The sound of the engines and the racing scenes were especially exciting in a movie theater.

I still think going to the cinema is a great experience, especially for movies with impressive visuals or sound effects. However, I’ve become so comfortable watching movies at home that it usually takes something special to get me to go!

Netflix, Snacks, and a Comfortable Sofa

Personally, I much prefer watching movies at home. I usually use Netflix, and I find it much more relaxing than going out to a cinema.

The biggest advantage is simply being comfortable. I can sit back, relax, and enjoy whatever food or drinks I want. I don’t have to worry about other people talking or making noise, and I can pause the movie whenever I need to. I can also wear whatever I want. Plus, I don’t even have to leave my house!

Another great thing about Netflix is that there are so many movies and TV shows available whenever I feel like watching something. And since I’m already paying for Netflix every month, I might as well get my money’s worth!

Of course, watching a movie at home doesn’t quite compare to the huge screen and powerful sound system of a movie theater. However, for me, the convenience and relaxed atmosphere are more important. Going to the cinema is fun every once in a while, but most of the time, I’d rather stay home and watch something on Netflix.

Movies That Are a Little Different

One type of cinema I’ve always found interesting is cult cinema. When I was in university, I actually took a class about cult films, and it ended up being one of the classes I really enjoyed.

A cult film is generally a movie that has developed a small but very dedicated group of fans. The word “cult” here doesn’t mean a religious cult, but it does suggest something similar in the sense that fans form a passionate community around a particular movie.

Cult films are often a little more unusual or unconventional. Some weren’t very successful when they first came out, but eventually developed a loyal following. I think it’s interesting how a movie can become such an important part of people’s lives, even if it wasn’t originally very popular.

Personally, my favorite genre is psychological thrillers. I love movies that make you think, keep you guessing, or have unexpected twists. Some of my favorite directors are Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, David Fincher, and Christopher Nolan. I really enjoy their unique styles of filmmaking and the way they tell stories. While not all of their movies are considered cult films, I think they are great examples of how creative and interesting cinema can be.

There are also some useful English words and expressions for describing movies.

Cult classic: A movie that has developed a dedicated following over time, even if it wasn’t originally very popular.

Example: “The Big Lebowski has become a cult classic.”

Underrated: Something that is better than most people think or doesn’t receive enough attention.

Example: “I think that movie is really underrated. More people should watch it!”

Overrated: Something that receives more praise than you think it deserves.

Example: “Everyone said that movie was amazing, but I thought it was overrated.”

Unsettling: Something that makes you feel uncomfortable, nervous, or disturbed.

Example: “The movie was really unsettling. I couldn’t stop thinking about it afterward.”

Action-packed: Something that has a lot of exciting action, movement, or dramatic events.

Example: “It was an action-packed movie from beginning to end!”

Epic: A movie that feels grand or impressive, often with a large-scale story, spectacular visuals, or dramatic scenes.

Example: “The movie was absolutely epic! The visuals were incredible.”

In a good way / In a bad way: Useful expressions for explaining whether something unusual or unexpected is positive or negative.

Examples:

“That movie was really strange, but in a good way!”

“The ending was surprising, but in a bad way. It didn’t make any sense!”

Speaking of epic movies, one film I’m really looking forward to is The Odyssey, directed by Christopher Nolan. It’s based on the ancient Greek epic poem and looks like the kind of movie that deserves to be watched on a huge screen. I think I’ll definitely have to make a trip to the cinema when it comes out!

Conclusion

Movies are a great way to relax, experience different stories, and enjoy a little entertainment. Although I only go to the cinema about once a year these days, I still enjoy watching films, especially from the comfort of my own home.

Taking a cult cinema class at university also helped me appreciate movies that are a little different from mainstream Hollywood films. I especially enjoy psychological thrillers and movies that make you think, and I think it’s interesting how certain films can develop such passionate fan communities.

For now, I’ll probably continue watching most of my movies on Netflix. However, with The Odyssey coming out, it looks like I already have my next movie theater trip planned!

How about you? Do you prefer watching movies at home or at the cinema? What’s your favorite genre, and is there an upcoming movie you’re excited to see?

Thanks for reading, and see you next time!
