Greetings everyone, nature is wearing a green coat to welcome summer. How’re you getting ready for summer? Here’s another short tip for the TOEIC speaking test;

Qn 11 Express an opinion. Speak as much as possible in the time you have. (You’ll have 45 seconds to prepare and speak for 60 seconds)   Please express your opinion with organized and logical ideas.   Would you rather work from home or commute to the workplace everyday?  (This type of question requires you to choose A or B and give reasons for your choice)  What do you think of taxi hailing apps like uber? ( This type of question asks what you think are the good and possibly bad points about the taxi hailing apps and a conclusion. (More on Qn 11 next time)

問題11は「Express an opinion (意見を述べる問題)」です。
時間内にできるだけ多く話しましょう。(準備時間は45秒で、話すのは60秒間です。)
そして、体系的で論理的なアイデアで意見を述べてください。

Would you rather work from home or commute to the workplace everyday?
(あなたは毎日職場に通勤するよりも、むしろ自宅で仕事をしたいですか。)

このタイプの質問では、AかBを選択し、その理由を説明する必要があります。

What do you think of taxi hailing apps like uber?
(uberのようなタクシー配車アプリについてどう思いますか？)

このタイプの質問では、タクシー配車アプリの良い点と悪い点は何だと思うかと、その結論を尋ねています。

「schedule an appointment」と「make an appointment」【ビジネス英会話】

“Schedule an appointment”

I’m not really a business guy personally, but some subtle differences in business English is that we tend to use different words for phrases in the context of business.

For example, instead of “I’d like to make an appointment”, many people in the corporate world, especially secretaries; would say “Schedule” instead of “make”.

Schedule is both a verb and noun, so you can use it to talk about a schedule, and also “schedule an appointment to put it in your schedule”.

Look out for more nuanced word usage in business English – usually, the basic phrases are used sparingly, and you’ll hear some new words in use in the corporate world.

私は個人的にはビジネスマンではありませんが、ビジネス英語の微妙な違いは、ビジネスの文脈ではフレーズに普段とは異なる単語を使用する傾向があることだと思います。

たとえば、「I’d like to make an appointment（会う約束をしたいのですが／予約をしたいのですが）」の代わりに、企業の人々、特に秘書は 「make」ではなく「schedule」を使います。

「schedule」は動詞でもあり名詞でもあるため、予定について話すために使ったり、「schedule an appointment to put it in your schedule（予約を入れて、それをあなたの予定表に入れる）」と言うこともできます。

ビジネス英語でのより微妙な単語の使用法に気を付けてみてください。
通常、ビジネスでは基本的なフレーズは控えめに使用され、会社では目新しい単語が聞こえてきます。

Fearless Questioning

Don’t be afraid to ask questions if you don’t know or understand something.

This is vital when it comes to learning anything, as if you only pretend to understand, you’ll never fully understand! There’s nothing wrong if you don’t know – if you don’t know, you don’t know, so make sure to ask your teachers questions frequently when you don’t know something.

Conversely, ask questions in general. A weak spot that many people have is they don’t know how to open conversations and maintain them with good questions. Learn how to ask open questions and focus on key points – learn about the other person!

オープンクエスチョンの仕方を学び、重要なポイントに焦点を当て、他の人のことをもっと知りましょう！

【デニー先生】ゴールデンウィークに愛媛に行きました

Ehime Birthday Trip

During my Golden Week break, I went to Ehime for 3 days as a birthday trip, and it was great.

My intention was to visit two castles – Ozu and Matsuyama. Both were incredible to see for me, and I was delighted to see so many historical artifacts like armour worn by lords of the time, weaponry such as spears, swords, daggers and so on, and architectural designs and locations. I also went to Garyu Sanso, an ancient cottage in the deep country side of Ehime. It was beautiful and I highly recommend it.

I was also lucky enough to see an exhibition at the art museum, showing off masterwork katana from all across Japan. I couldn’t take photos, but it was amazing seeing how well crafted the swords and parts were.

The trip overall was wonderful – Ehime’s food was fantastic and if you really enjoy history, particularly regarding Samurai, architecture and weaponry, Ehime is a fantastic choice.

愛媛へのバースデー旅行

ゴールデンウィークにバースデー旅行として愛媛に3日間行ったのですが、素晴らしかったです。

旅の目的は小津城と松山城の二つの城を訪ねることでした。
どちらも私にとっては素晴らしく、当時の領主が身につけていた鎧、槍、剣、短剣などの武器、建築のデザインや場所など、多くの歴史的遺物を見ることができて嬉しく思いました。
臥龍山荘と呼ばれる古い山荘にも行きましたが、とても綺麗でみなさんも行ってみることを強くおすすめします。

また、幸運にも美術館の展示会で全国の傑作な刀が披露されていました。
写真は撮れませんでしたが、刀やパーツの作り方が素晴らしかったです。

この旅行は全体的に素晴らしいものとなりました。愛媛の食べ物も素晴らしいものでした。
もし、武士、建築、武器などの歴史に興味があるなら、愛媛は素晴らしい選択です。

“beat around the bush”

Today’s phrase is “Beat around the bush”. What does that mean?

Well, I could give a very long explanation of what it means, but I won’t beat around the bush – I’ll just tell you what it means directly.

That’s what it means, in the negative sense. To not beat around the bush is to be direct and make your point quickly. To beat around the bush means to not express your point quickly – you’re talking too much or not staying on topic.

Here are example ways to use this phrase:

“Let’s not beat around the bush”
“Stop beating around the bush”
“You keep beating around the bush!”

It’s a strange phrase, but a fun one to use – and sometimes you’ll hear it used by native speakers or in film.

「not beat around the bush」は、直接的に素早く要点を言うことを指し、「beat around the bush」は、自分の主張の要点をすぐに言わないことを意味します。話しすぎているか、話題からそれているのです。

At The Restaurant

This week’s topic is about being at a restaurant. 

We’ve all been to restaurants, but going to restaurants in different countries can be a bit of a challenge because of all the accents, pronunciation, language differences, etc. The lesson is meant to roleplay the experience of being at a restaurant, but one of the best things you can take from it is to keep it simple! Use your basic subject, verb object rulesets, keep your English efficient, and also use gesturing. If you don’t know what someone says too, you can ask them to speak slower, or simply revert back to..gesturing!

Sometimes you will just encounter language barriers, there’s no doubt about it. There are so many different kinds of accents and dialects in English, so just enjoy the experience of it and try to learn something new.

今週のトピックは「At The Restauran（レストランで）」です。

みなさんレストランには行きますが、アクセント、発音、言語の違いなどがある他の国のレストランに行くのは少し難しく感じるかもしれません。
このレッスンでは、レストランでの会話をロールプレイすることを目的としていますが、このレッスンから得られる最高のものの一つは「シンプルに話すこと」です！
基本的なSVO型のルールを使って、効率的に英語を話し、ジェスチャーも使いましょう。
誰かが何を言っているのかわからない場合は、ゆっくり話すように頼むか、単にまたジェスチャーを使うこともできます。

言語の壁に遭遇することもあります。それは間違いありません。
しかし、英語が持つさまざまな種類のアクセントや方言を楽しんで、新しいことをぜひ学んでみてください。

What we are doing in Kensington
Teaching How To Write

Something that we’ve been focusing on quite a lot in the past few months has been preparing for many tests, like Eiken, TOEIC and so on.

One of the big areas in these tests is writing, and writing is something we can help. Recently – at least in my case – I’ve been helping a bunch of my students with writing and editing their own written work too, guiding them in how to structure essays, what kind of wording to use, efficiency, how to make things read smoothly, and so on.

Hiring Vocabulary

Today I would like to introduce you some vocabulary related to hiring. Every year in Kensington we look for new staff and teachers. Usually every March one or two of our staff or teachers quit our school, usually to return back to their countries or move to a different area. 

This year in March, two of our teachers quit, one moved back to her home country in the US and the other moved to a different prefecture. In their place we have already hired 3 teachers and we are looking for one or two more. 

We usually find new staff by posting a job ad. Many people that are interested in the job send us applications with their resumes and cover letters. We check all the applications and choose the best candidates for online interviews. 

After we have interviewed them online, then we see them in person at our schools. Our hiring process is long and we are very selective on whom we hire. 

Hiring the right people is one of the most important decisions we make and I think it’s a big part of why our school is successful.

私たちはかなり時間をかけ、厳選して採用をしています。

適切な人材を採用することは、最も重要な決定事項の1つであり、ケンジントン英会話が成功する理由の大部分だと思っています。

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Use our pre-study material

In Kensington, by using our original pre-study system and materials you can pre-study all the grammar and vocabulary that are necessary for you in class. Please take good advantage of this system, once you have pre-studied the material the class runs much more smoothly and you can focus on using what you have pre-studied in class to make an as natural as possible conversation with your teacher in private classes and with another student in group classes. 

We can then focus our classes on areas of weakness, and on expanding your grammar and vocabulary. Pre-studying our materials effectively saves you a lot of time and helps you improve faster. It’s a great system, please utilise it!

I like reading, I try to read at least a couple of books per month and I like reading a variety of genres. Biographies, History, Business, Self Improvement, Novels, Philosophy and most recently I love reading about science, especially astronomy and physics. 

I used to hate physics at school, didn’t understand a word of it, I think I failed both my physics class and also my astronomy class in high school and I’d imagine that my teacher would be very surprised and happy by my reading list nowadays.

My interest in physics started while reading Einstein’s biography by Walter Isaacson. He is one of my favourite non-fiction writers and I’ve read many of his books. He specializes in biographies of historical icons such as Steve Jobs, Leonardo Da Vinci, Einstein etc… While reading Einstein’s biography, I got interested in his theory about the Relativity of Time and I desperately tried to understand what it meant. 

I think I kind of do now. Did you know that time is different in every single spot of the universe and that it’s affected by the mass of objects and their gravitational field that warps space and time around them? That’s some crazy stuff!! Our universe and the scientific facts about it are so crazy that they are almost unbelievable. 

Anyway, I’m in the beginning of my journey when it comes to science and time is sparse these days cause of my work but I’m curious and super excited about learning more!

私は読書が好きで、少なくとも月に数冊の本を読むようにしています。
さまざまなジャンルの本を読むのが好きで、伝記、歴史、ビジネス、自己啓発、小説、哲学、そして最近では科学、特に天文学と物理学について読むのが大好きです。

学校では物理が嫌いで、出てくる単語はひとつも分からず、高校では物理のクラスも天文学のクラスも単位を落としたかと思います。
きっと当時の先生が、今の私の読書リストを見たら、とても驚き嬉しく思ってくれるでしょう。

物理学への興味は、ウォルター・アイザックソンによるアインシュタインの伝記を読んだときから始まりました。
彼は私の好きなノンフィクション作家の一人で、私は彼の本をたくさん読みました。
彼はスティーブ・ジョブズ、レオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチ、アインシュタインなど、歴史的アイコンの伝記を専門としています。
アインシュタインの伝記を読んでいる間、私は彼の相対性理論に興味を持ち、それが何を意味するのかを必死に理解しようとしました。

今はなんとなく理解できたかと思います。
時間というものは宇宙のすべての場所で異なり、物体の質量とそれらの周りの空間と時間を歪める重力場の影響を受けることをご存知ですか？わけが分からないですね！
私たちの宇宙とそれに関する科学的事実は非常にクレイジーで、ほとんど信じられないほどです。

とにかく、私は科学に関しては旅の始まりにあります。
最近は仕事で時間があまりないのですが、さらに学びを進めていきたいと思っています。
