The most enjoyable part of my day

As much as I love my work, I have to admit that the most enjoyable part of my day comes outside work and it’s spending time with my children.

Last Sunday we went fishing all together for the first time and it was an amazing experience. We woke up at 5am on Sunday and drove to Imajuku to a fishing spot. My daughter complained a lot about it at first and didn’t even want to try fishing and my wife was also not particularly excited about it. 

That all changed when we caught our first fish!! We all became super excited about it and definitely needed more than one fishing rod. We caught 12 fish in all and my wife fried them when we went home. They were delicious and we all agreed to go fishing again as soon as possible with more fishing rods!

私の一日の中で最も楽しいパート

私は仕事が大好きですが、私の1日の中で最も楽しいパートは仕事以外であり、子供たちと過ごす時間であることを認めなければなりません。

先週の日曜日、私たちは初めて一緒に釣りに行きました、そしてそれは素晴らしい経験でした。
日曜日の午前5時に起きて、今宿まで車で釣り場へ。
娘は最初は不満が多く、釣りもしたくなかったようですし、妻も特に楽しみにはしていませんでした。

しかし、最初の魚を捕まえたとき、すべてが変わりました！
私たちはみんなとても興奮し、間違いなく一つの釣り竿では足りませんでした。
全部で12匹釣ったので、家に帰ると妻が揚げてくれました。
とても美味しかったので、釣り竿を増やして、できるだけ早くまた釣りに行くことにみんな同意しました！

【ジェイミー先生】ついに富士山へ行きます！

Mt Fuji here I come!

Finally after 3 years of talking about it I am on my way to climbing Mt Fuji! Yeehaa. I missed the climbing season in 2019 and you can imagine what went wrong in 2020 and 2021 so this is the year that I’m finally going to do it. I can’t wait!  

It’s been a very long time since I climbed a mountain so I’m in the process of getting in shape for it. I did a 10 kilometre run yesterday followed by kickboxing in the afternoon and I can certainly say I feel all of my 43 years today if not slightly older. I usually keep myself in pretty good condition but from what I remember of the last time I did a long climb there is almost nothing harder and I want to be over prepared for it. Two of my good friends who lived in Fukuoka before are coming back for a few days and we are going to do it together and after we come back down we will be making a pilgrimage to the Baird Beer Brewery in Numazu City for some well earned refreshment. 

I’ll tell you all about how it went in my next blog!

富士山へ行きます！

3年言い続けてついに富士登山へ！イーハー！
私は2019 年の登山シーズンを逃し、また2020 年と 2021 年に何がうまくいかなかったかは想像に難くありません。
というわけで、今年はいよいよやります。楽しみです！

山に登るのは久しぶりなので、いま体調を整えているところです。
昨日は 10 km のランニングを行った後、午後はキックボクシングを行ったので、自分の体が43歳であることを痛感しました。それ以上に感じるほどでした。
常にとても良い状態に保てていると思いますが、最後に登山をしたときのことを思い返すと、あれ以上困難なことはないほど大変だったので、今回は十分に準備したいと思っています。
以前福岡に住んでいた私の良き友人 2 人が数日間戻ってくるので、私たちは一緒に登山を行う予定です。
登山が終わったら、気分を爽快にするために、沼津のベアードビール醸造所に巡礼します。

その様子は次回のブログでお伝えします！

Hope you’re having a good weekend everyone. It’s Saturday and time to share a little more about myself. I’ll stick to our theme this week (USA). I studied, lived and worked in the USA, particularly in Upstate New York. I think my life in the USA turned me from a shy and timid young man into a confident man. From the time I arrived in the US, I heard the phrase “Yes, you can!”  over and over.  And within  6 months of my arrival in the USA, I learned how to drive, got a Driver’s License and bought a used car -my very first car.
I think one of the greatest things about America is the “Can do” attitude.

みなさん、良い週末をお過ごしですか。
土曜日なので、今日は自分自身について少しお話したいと思います。
今週のテーマ「The USA」に関連してお話します。

私はアメリカ、特にニューヨーク州北部で勉強し、住み、働きました。
アメリカでの生活で、私は恥ずかしがり屋で臆病な青年から、自信に満ちた男に変わったと思います。
アメリカに到着した時から、「Yes, you can!（あなたはできる！）」という言葉を何度も聞きました。
そして、アメリカに到着してから6か月以内に、運転の仕方を学び、運転免許証を取得し、最初の車である中古車を購入しました。

アメリカの最大の魅力のひとつは「Can do（できる）」という姿勢だと思います。

【デニー先生】ファスティング(断食)を控え、朝食を食べ始めました

Holding off on Fasting

As many students know, I tend to be pretty strict with my nutrition and diet and like to stay in good shape. Many students also are aware that I basically never eat breakfast and do a lot of fasting. It’s very healthy for you.

That said, I’ve started eating breakfast again! The reason is because if I’m exercising a lot, I need a lot of calories – the problem is when I’m busy with work, it’s very, very hard to get enough calories, exercise, work and fast at the same time.

I started to feel very tired around June and my sleep was not good either. After some thinking as to why, I realized that I was not eating enough calories – so, I stopped fasting and now eat a big bowl of oatmeal every morning. I feel a lot better, and a lot stronger, too.

Diets and lifestyles are always changing, and it’s important to be aware of how you feel and how you can fix it!

断食を控える

私の生徒さんの多くが知っているように、私は自分の栄養と食事にかなり厳しい傾向があり、体調・体型を保ちたいと思っています。
多くの生徒さんはまた、私が基本的に朝食を食べないことと、断食をよくしていることを知っています。
これはとても健康的なことです。

そうは言っても、私は再び朝食を食べ始めました！
その理由は、私がたくさん運動をしている時は、多くのカロリーが必要だからです。
問題は、仕事で忙しいとき、十分なカロリーを得たり、運動、仕事、そして断食をしたりするのが非常に難しいということです。

6月頃からとても疲れ始め、睡眠も良くありませんでした。
理由について考えてみたところ、十分なカロリーを摂取していないことに気づきました。
断食をやめ、毎朝大きなボウルに入れたオートミールを食べています。
とても調子が良く、強くなったと感じます。

食事とライフスタイルは常に変化しているので、自分がどのように感じ、それをどのように修正できるかを知っておくことが重要です。

【ティム先生】バスケットボールファンです

Basketball

I used to love basketball, I would play every day, watch all the games on TV and if there ever were any NBA games broadcast live in Greece I would stay up and watch them especially the ones in the playoffs which took place in June. 

My friends and I would talk about NBA stars and we would imagine how great it would be if ever a Greek athlete made it in the NBA. 

Those days were in the 90s and after I went to university my interest in basketball feigned until one day in June 2011 when I turned on the TV in the morning and the NBA finals were playing between Dallas and Miami. I wasn’t planning to watch the game and had little interest in it in the start but after a few minutes I noticed that these teams were playing pretty amazing basketball and by the end of the game I had become very into the game passionately supporting Dallas.

I ended up watching the entire series and by the end of next season I think I knew almost every player in the league. I watch many games during the season and my son has also become a basketball fan recently so I’m looking forward to watching many games with him. 

We both support the Milwaukee Bucks passionately and love Giannis. Regarding Giannis, I will speak of in a separate blog as his my favourite athlete and an amazing role model for young people.

バスケットボール

私はかつて、バスケットボールが大好きで、毎日遊んで、テレビですべての試合を観戦していました。
ギリシャでNBAの試合がライブで放送された場合は、特に6月に行われたプレーオフでは、遅くまで起きて試合を観戦していました。

友人と私はNBAのスターについて話し、ギリシャのアスリートがNBAでプレーしたらどれほど素晴らしいか想像しました。

当時は90年代で、私が大学に行った後は、バスケットボールへの興味は薄れていました。2011年6月のある日、午前中にテレビの電源を入れて、ダラスとマイアミのNBAファイナルが行われているのを見るまでは。
私は試合を観戦する予定はなく、最初はほとんど興味がありませんでしたが、数分した後、これらのチームがかなり素晴らしいプレーをしていることに気付き、試合の終わりまで、ダラスを熱心に応援しながら試合に夢中になりました。 

最終的にはシリーズ全体を見ることになり、次のシーズンの終わりでは、リーグのほぼすべてのプレーヤーを知っていたと思います。
シーズン中はたくさんの試合を観戦していますが、最近は息子もバスケットボールファンになっているので、一緒にたくさんの試合を観戦するのを楽しみにしています。

私たちはミルウォーキー・バックスを熱心に応援し、ジャンニスが大好きです。
ジャンニスは、私たちのお気に入りのアスリートであり、若者にとって素晴らしいロールモデルです。
そのことについては別のブログでお話したいと思います。

【ジェイミー先生】日本での忙しさについて思うこと「Work to live, don’t live to work」

The Brits aren’t all that busy!

We have been talking a lot about being busy this week and it’s got me thinking again. Why is it that the Japanese seem to be so busy all the time? 

Of course in Britain people work hard too and students also study hard when the time comes but we just have so much more free time and I can’t for the life of me figure out why the Japanese need to do so much work/ study and have so little free time. British kids for the most part get a good education and university levels in the UK are just as good, if not slightly higher than in Japan, so why the need for all the extra study/ cram school/ private tutoring and the like? British kids wouldn’t dream of going to school at the weekends, don’t have school in the holidays, and have never even heard of cram school, so how do they get their education with all this free time? 

The same can be said for the workplace. I have worked a number of jobs in the UK and we get the work done but we have loads, and I mean loads of free time. Every weekend off and at least  5 weeks of paid holidays in a year not including public holidays. We have a couple of different sayings in Britain that pertain to this one of them is kind of my personal motto too” Work hard, play hard.” The other is “Work to live, don’t live to work”.I think I have a pretty decent work life balance since I run my own company and can take time off when needs be but I always get a bit jealous when I find my brother is on holiday again , it seem like he is never at work! I suppose I’ve just got used to working in Japan and have forgotten how much free time is important to my fellow Brits!

Time to take a break I think!!

イギリス人はそれほど忙しくありません

今週は「忙しいこと」についてたくさん話していました。それは、私にもう一度このことを考えさせてくれました。
なぜ日本人はいつも忙しそうなのか？

もちろんイギリスでも人はしかるべき時に一生懸命働いて、学生も一生懸命勉強していますが、余暇がたくさんあるので、日本人がなぜそんなにたくさんの仕事や勉強をしなければならないのか、なぜ余暇がそんなに少ないのか、どうしても分かりません。
イギリスの子どもたちはほとんどの場合、良い教育を受けており、大学のレベルは日本よりもわずかに高くはないにしても同じくらい良いのですが、なぜ追加の勉強／塾／家庭教師などが必要なのでしょうか？
週末に学校に行くとは夢にも思わないイギリスの子どもたちは、休日には学校はなく、塾についても聞いたことがありません。
このような自由な時間がありながら、どのようにして教育を受けているのでしょうか。

職場についても同じことが言えます。
私はイギリスでいくつか仕事をしてきましたが、仕事が終わったら、たくさんの自由時間がありました。
毎週末の休みと、1年間に少なくとも5週間の有給休暇。これは祝日を除きます。
イギリスには、これに関連するいくつかのことわざがありますが、そのうちの一つは私の個人的なモットーでもあります。
「Work hard, play hard（よく働き、よく遊べ）」
もう1つは「Work to live, don’t live to work（生きるために働きなさい。働くために生きてはいけない）」です。
自分の会社を経営しているので、仕事と生活のバランスはかなり良いと思います。
必要なときに休暇を取ることができますが、私の兄弟がまたホリデーを取っているのを見つけたときはいつも少し嫉妬します。
まるで彼は決して仕事をしていないように見えるほどです！
おそらく日本で働くことに慣れたので、イギリス人の仲間にとってどれだけ自由時間が重要かを忘れてしまったんだと思います。

おそらく、そろそろ休む時間ですね!!

How’s your weekend everyone? 

In my home country (Uganda), studying abroad is quite popular. Thousands of young and not so young people go to study abroad every year. Some of them on Government sponsorship (their studies are paid for by the government of Uganda). In fact, there are many Ugandan students studying advanced courses(Masters and PhDs) in top Japanese universities now. In the past, the majority of Ugandan students used to study in western English speaking countries. In the last 20 years however, China, India, Japan, Ukraine, Russia are among the study destinations for Ugandan students.

みなさん、週末はいかがお過ごしですか？

私の母国（ウガンダ）では、留学はとても人気があります。
毎年、何千人もの若者や、そうではない人も海外に留学しています。
彼らの中には政府の支援を受けている人もいます（彼らの勉強についてはウガンダ政府によって支払われています）。
実際に、現在、日本のトップの大学で上級コース（修士号と博士号）を勉強しているウガンダの学生がたくさんいます。
昔は、ウガンダの学生の大多数は西の英語圏の国で勉強していました。
しかし、過去20年間で、中国、インド、日本、ウクライナ、ロシアは、ウガンダの学生の留学先の一つです。

【デニー先生】トップガン マーヴェリックおすすめ！2回も見ました

Top Gun: Maverick

I recently watched Top Gun: Maverick for the second time in theatres.

It’s the first time I’ve been to the movies to see a movie twice, and it’s because Top Gun is such a fantastic film and a breath of fresh air.

It’s worth seeing, not just because it’s an amazing action and filming spectacle (it’s real flying and jets with only a little CG), but because it’s a completely anti-cynical film.

What I mean by that is over the years, many Hollywood films are very cynical and have themes of moral “greyness”. No side is good or bad – heroes have very serious flaws, etc.

Top Gun is none of that. It promotes teamwork, overcoming problems, learning from mistakes and bonding. It has a very positive view on men, women and the Western world which I haven’t seen in a film in a long time. I highly recommend it, it’s fantastic.

トップガン マーヴェリック

最近、２度目の「トップガン マーヴェリック」を見に映画館にいきました。

私が2回も映画を見に映画館に行ったのは初めてです。
それは、トップガンがとても素晴らしい映画であり、気分を一新してくれるものだからです。

素晴らしいアクションと目を見張るような光景（実際の飛行とジェット機。わずかなCGのみ。）だけでなく、完全に反シニカル的な映画なので、一見の価値があります。

どういうことかと言うと、何年にもわたって、多くのハリウッド映画は非常にシニカルで、グレーな道徳をテーマにしています。
良い側、悪い側などはありません。ヒーローにはとても深刻な欠陥がある、などです。

トップガンはそのどれでもありません。
チームワークを奨励し、問題を克服し、間違いから学び、絆を深めます。
長いあいだ映画で見たことのない、男性、女性、そして西洋の世界に対してとてもポジティブな見方があります。
トップガンを強くおすすめします、素晴らしいですよ。

【ティム先生】瞑想にハマってます

Seeking Enlightenment

Hey everyone,

In the past couple of years I have gotten really into meditation. It started a couple of years ago when I read a book about meditation which was on Bill Gates’ recommended book list. I downloaded the app recommended by the book and I started meditating on and off for the next year and a half. 

I don’t really understand how and why but generally speaking when I keep up with my meditation habits I usually feel much calmer than usual and very happy with how my days are unfolding, when I don’t meditate I tend to feel rather irritable. 

Recently I have made a habit of meditating every morning soon after I get up for 10 minutes. I’m on a 35 day streak and I feel as calm as Gandhi!

How about you guys, do you meditate? If so, let’s talk about it in class!

悟りを求めて

こんにちは、みなさん。

過去数年で、私は本当に瞑想にハマりました。
それは数年前、ビル・ゲイツおすすめの本のリストに載っている、瞑想の本を読んだ時に始まりました。
この本で推奨されているアプリをダウンロードして、次の1年半のあいだ瞑想を行いました。

理由はよくわかりませんが、一般的に、瞑想を習慣づけると、いつもよりずっと落ち着いて、日々の様子にとても満足します。
瞑想しないと、ややイライラする傾向があります。

最近では、毎朝起きてすぐの10分間は瞑想する習慣をつけています。
私は35日間連続で成功していて、まるでガンジーと同じくらい落ち着いているかのように感じます!

Hello there everyone. 

Yesterday was a big day for some of our students because it was Eiken test day! My son also took the test for the first time but unfortunately since I told him I’d buy him a new video game if he passed he decided to take the easy option of level 3 and not pre-2 like I had originally planned.

We went to Fukuoka University for the test this time and I was really surprised by how young some of the test takers were. I think some of them may have been in primary one or two and they looked a bit stressed out to be honest unlike my boy who was busy playing games on his phone in the classroom much to my dismay! 

I contacted some of our students afterwards and they all said it was a bit on the tough side but I have a feeling the results are going to be good after all the practice we put in so fingers crossed. As for my boy he came out of the classroom loudly pronouncing that it was a piece of cake! Can’t wait to see his face when I tell him he needs to take level 2 next ha ha!

みなさん、こんにちは。

昨日は英検の日だったので、一部の生徒にとっては重要な日でしたね！
息子も初めてテストを受けましたが、合格したら新しいビデオゲームを買うと言ったので、残念ながら私の当初の計画の準２級ではなく、３級という簡単な方を彼は選びました。

今回は福岡大学に行ってテストをしましたが、一部の受験者の若さには本当に驚きました。
中には小学校１年か２年生くらいの子がいて、少しストレスを感じているように見えました。
正直言って、教室でスマホゲームをするのに忙しかった私の息子とは違い、がっかり！

その後、何人かの生徒さんに連絡を取りました。
少し大変だったとのことでしたが、練習を重ねてきたので良い結果が得られると感じています。幸運を祈ります。
息子は教室から出てくると、簡単だったと大声で言いました！
私は彼の顔を見るのが待ちきれません。次は２級を受ける必要があると言うので。ha ha!
