Travel English – Starting a conversation

One of the best ways to enhance our travelling is to communicate with other people, locals or other travellers.

The best time to talk to someone is when they are not moving, for example when you are standing in line, or when you are sitting down on a bench or a nearby table. It’s best not to stop someone when they are walking on the road.

Here are some generic phrases we can use to start a conversation:

The weather is so nice today.

Are you from around here?

There sure are many people here today!

Are you here on business or on vacation?

Are these your kids? They are so cute!

What kind of dog is that? ← Only if they are holding a dog

Hello everyone,

I’ll be posting some heart idioms for a few weeks, first one is lose heart and it means to become discouraged.

lose heart: to stop believing that you can succeed
He was almost about to lose heart when he received the most wonderful news.
心を失う：上手くいくと信じるのを止める
一番素晴らしい知らせを受けた時、彼は危うく心が折れるところだった。

ケンジントン英会話ニュース – Kensington Hanami Party at Maizuru Park

Hello guys,

It’s this time of the year again, the weather is warmer, the cherry blossoms are blooming and there is an air of excitement all around the country!

As you know, we’ll be holding our party this Sunday from 14:00 – 17:00, so let’s please all meet up by 13:50 and walk together to our gathering spot.

The Hanami season is approaching its end but we chose this date so the park is not too crowded and we can all have a lovely picnic in relative peace!

As the Hanami participation is free, please make sure to bring some drinks and food for yourselves and for sharing with the group.

またこの季節になりました。気候も暖かく、桜の花も満開で、わくわくします。

みなさんご存知のとおり、今度の日曜日の14時から17時でお花見パーティーを開きます。
13時50分に集合して、一緒に歩いてお花見場所まで歩いて行こうと思います。

お花見シーズンはもうすぐ終わりですが、人もそんなに多くなく、楽しいピクニックになるだろうと思って、この日程にしました。

お花見の参加費は無料となっておりますが、自分の分や、シェアするための飲み物や食べ物を持って来てくださいね。

Rina’s blog – 発音を意識してみよう

みなさんこんにちは！
私はケンジントンにいる時、いつも横でみなさんの楽しそうなレッスンを片耳で聞いているのですが、
たまに気になることがあります。
それは発音です。

例えば、

“good”をグッドォ
“take”をテイクゥ
“interesting”をインタレスティングゥ

など、(カタカナで書くと表現が難しいですが)語尾を最後まではっきりと発音していることで
とても日本語のような英語になってしまっています。
これらは通常初めの文字にアクセントがきて、語尾ははっきりとは発音しませんよね？

もちろん、私たちがネイティブのように話すことはほぼ無理なことですし、
先生たちも言っている通り、そこに重点をおく必要もないと思います。
でも、「意識」することは私は必要だと思っています。

それはやっぱり、海外に行ったときに、たとえ話せても相手に通じないと意味がないですし、
伝える努力の一つとして、自分の発音を向上させることは、大事なことだと思うからです。

日本人にとっては、
TH、R、V、Fの発音が特に難しいと思うので
私は、その全てが含まれている数字のOne〜Tenまでや、Think、Run、Van、Fine、などいくつか単語を選んで、何度も大きな声に出して言ってみたりしています。

あとは、youtubeの英語学習サイトなどで、実際に話している人の口元をみて
真似して言ってみたり、海外ドラマを何度もみながら正しい英語を耳に覚えさせています。

みなさんそれぞれ勉強法があると思いますが、
今より少しだけ、自分の発音に意識を向けてみてはいかがでしょうか？

そして授業や先生たちとの会話の中で、「Rが入っている単語は下を巻く！」とか、「THが入ってる時は下を噛む！」と、毎回意識しながら話してみることで、必ず口が慣れてくると思いますよ♫

How to study- Review the first quarter

Hi there everyone, you may remember that at the beginning of the year I gave you advice to go back over what you had done last year and see what you did well or didn’t do so well. This time my advice is to go back over what you have learned so far this year since we are at the end of the first quarter.

Take a look back at what you have done, try to think back on what you found difficult in the lessons, what kind of grammar you may have had trouble with and whether you think you have mastered it now. It’s a great idea to go back over any notes you have taken in the class too from time to time because we all need our memories refreshed from time to time.

Review is every bit as important as learning new things, so it’s extremely important to review everything until it’s firmly set in your mind. And please remember, we are always here to help so never be afraid to ask.

みなさんこんにちは！覚えてる方もいらっしゃるかもしれませんが、私は去年あなたが一年を通して何をやり遂げたのかを振り返り、そして何がうまくいったか、何がうまくいかなかったのかを振り返ることが大切だというアドバイスをしました。

今回の私からのアドバイスは、あなたが第一四半期までの間で今のところ何を学んだのかを振り返ることも大切だということです。

今まであなたがやってきたことを振り返ってみて、レッスンの中でどんな困難を見つけたか、どんな種類のグラマーにつまづいているのか、それは解決しているのか。

レッスンの間にメモをしたノートを何回も見直すことはとても大切なことです。何回も見直すことで私たちの記憶をより確かなものにしてくれます。

振り返ることは新しい事を学ぶことと同じくらい大切です。なので、あなたがきちんと理解し覚えるまで復習をすることはとても大切です。

そして、私たちはいつでもあなたを助けますからいつでも質問してくださいね。
