Start from Scratch

Hi there everyone, 

A very easy expression today. “Start from scratch” means to start a process from the very very beginning. 

Example.
“ We found one major flaw while designing our newest product and had to start the whole process from scratch.”

It can also be used in general situations too, not just business.
“ That was salt you just put in the cake mix! We will have to start from scratch.”

Hope that comes in handy.

 “Start from scratch” とは、すごく最初の段階から始める（ゼロからのスタート）という意味です。

例

Study Advice
IELTS Advice

Hello again everyone,

As you know by now we are going to be offering test preparation help and advice for IELTS, TOEIC, TOEFL, and EIKEN from this year. I will be focusing on teaching mostly IELTS and from now on will be giving you all hints and tips here on different parts of the test and what to expect on the day of your exam. 

Today we will start with an easy tip for part one of the speaking test.
You will be asked a number of simple questions about yourself, where you are from, and why you are studying English. This part of the test is a back and forth conversation between you and the examiner and lasts for about 4-5 minutes. It covers a range of different topics that will be covered in most IELTS textbooks. 

Tip: There is a lot of material available to prepare for this but try not to memorise each one. If the examiner feels that you are giving a memorised answer they will change the topic so by all means practice as many of the different topics that may come up but don’t commit them to memory, they are looking for English used fluently and naturally.

私は今後、 主にIELTS対策を行う予定で、皆さんにテストに関する様々なヒントやコツ、テスト当日に予測されることについてお伝えして行きます。

今日はスピーキングパートについての簡単なヒントをお伝えします。
あなたは、どこから来ましたか？なぜ英語を勉強しているのですか？などあなた自身についていくつかの簡単な質問をされるでしょう。
あなたと試験官の間で交わされる会話は4～５分続きます。ほとんどのIELTSテキストで取り上げられているであろう、様々なトピックをカバーしています。

ヒント: テスト対策に関する沢山の教材がありますが、ひとつひとつを記憶する必要はありません。試験官はあなたが答えを暗記していると感じたら、話題を変更するでしょう。
もちろん出てくる可能性のある様々なトピックをできるだけ多く練習していいですが、記憶はしないようにしましょう。彼らは流暢で自然な英語を望んでいるのです。

Talk about myself, my country
Raising bilingual kids 

Hello again, 

As a lot of you know, I have two kids and they were both born and raised in Japan. People always assume that just because one of their parents is an English speaker they will automatically be bilingual and I can assure you that this is simply not the case. Because they both go to the local primary school, most of their influences are Japanese and their immediate family is in Japan too so of course Japanese becomes their preferred language. 

It is a bit of a struggle to make them fully bilingual and to do so is one of my missions in life! 

To do this I ban Japanese in the house when I’m there and they can’t watch Japanese tv, youtube or basically do anything in Japanese when I’m there. Sounds harsh? They certainly think so but it really works, they talk to me and my wife in English and they become more immersed in western culture. Actually my daughter actually prefers English movies and so to Japanese now. 

It is not easy though, there are times that they hate me for being so strict and I know that soon enough I won’t be able to control what my son does as he is turning 12 soon and getting a bit big for his boots, but I hope that I’ve done enough groundwork to set them on the right path and they will be fully bilingual in the future. 

Can’t wait to see their faces when I tell them they’ll be studying for TOEFL soon!

バイリンガルキッズの育て方 

こんにちは、またまたジェイミーです。

皆さんご存知の様に私には日本で生まれ育っている二人の子供がいます。両親の1人が英語を話すなら、子供達も自然にバイリンガルになるだろう、といつも皆さんに思われますが、そんな事はないと私が保証します。なぜなら子供達は地元の小学校に通い、ほとんどの場合日本人の影響を受け、家族も日本に住んでいるからです。そうすると当然のように、彼らは日本語を好むようになります。

彼らを十分なバイリンガルにするのは中々苦労します。そしてそれは私の人生の使命の1つです！
私は子供達に、私がいる時は家の中では日本語を話す事、日本語のテレビやYoutubeを観る事、基本的に日本語で何かを行う事を禁止しています。
厳しすぎると思いますか？当然子供達もそう思っていますが、これは本当に効果的なのです。彼らは私や妻と英語で話し、欧米の文化にハマるようになります。実際に私の娘は現在、日本よりも英語の映画を好んでいます。

これは簡単な事ではないです。とても厳しくする事で子供達に嫌がられることもありますし、もうすぐ12歳になる息子は少し自尊心が強くなってきていて、すぐに彼をにコントロールできなくなるだろうことはわかっています。

しかし私は、彼らが正しい道を歩むための十分な土台作りをして、将来完全なバイリンガルになってほしいと願っています。

もうすぐトーフルのための勉強を始めるよ、と伝えたらどんな顔をするのか楽しみです！

Spoilt for Choice

Hello there everyone,

Continuing with the theme of choices, I’d like to show you this commonly used English expression “Spoilt for choice” which means that you have a large amount of something to choose from, maybe even to the point where you possibly can’t decide. 

Example
“We had an amazing holiday in Japan. There was so much good food. We were really spoilt for choice and wanted to stay longer so we could  try it all!”

皆さんこんにちは。

引き続き「Choices-選択」をテーマに、広く使われている “Spoilt for choice”という表現を紹介したいと思います。
これは、選ぶことができないほど膨大な選択肢がある、つまり贅沢な悩みという意味を表します。

This Weekend’s topic
Choices

Hello, there everyone, 

The topic for our classes this weekend in the Akasaska , Nishijin, and Yakuin schools is “Choices”.
In the class we will be talking about our preferences, making choices while shopping, making, accepting, and refusing suggestions for weekend plans, and choosing what to do together. It’s a pretty simple, but very practical class so I look forward to teaching it to you all this weekend!

What we are doing at Kensington
Testing

Hello again!
Hope you all had a great summer despite the dreary weather. 

We have decided to get into test prep this year since it is something that we are quite often asked for by new students. There are endless numbers of English tests but we will be focusing on the 4 big ones. TOEIC, TOEFL, IELTS, and Eiken. They all have their different advantages, TOEIC is good for improving your work prospects here in Japan along with Eiken, TOEFL and and IELTS are a bit more on the academic side and useful for entrance to colleges and universities here and overseas. We will teach you about the tests in general, level/ scoring systems, hints and tips for upping your score or passing your exam, what to expect on the day of your exam, and more. If you need any of these exams in the  future or are just interested in giving them a try to check your level of English then please feel free to contact us for more details anytime.

皆さんこんにちは！
憂鬱な天気を除けば、皆さんが素晴らしい夏を過ごしていることを祈ります。

今年、多くの新しい生徒さんからの要望を受け、ケンジントン英会話ではテスト対策のコースを開始する事になりました。英語のテストは数え切れないほどありますが、主要の4つである TOEIC, TOEFL, IELTS, 英検に焦点を当てています。

これらはそれぞれに異なった強みを持っています。
TOEICは英検と並んで、日本での仕事の将来性を高めるのに良いですし、TOEFLとIELTSは少し学術寄りで、日本や海外の大学や専門学校への入学に役立ちます。
