Kia ora koutou katoa!
皆さん、こんにちは！Josh（ジョシュ）といいます。Kensingtonの一番新しいチームメンバーです。
「Kia ora」は、ニュージーランドで「こんにちは」という意味で使われる挨拶です。マオリ語から来ており、マオリ語はアオテアロア・ニュージーランドの先住民の言語です。「Aotearoa（アオテアロア）」は「長い白い雲の土地」という意味です。これで、ニュージーランドの天気について少し想像がつくのではないでしょうか。私は首都のウェリントンで育ちました。私の個人的な意見ですが、ニュージーランドで断トツに一番の街だと思っています。ウェリントンは曇りや風の強い日が多いですが、天気の良い日は最高です。
小さくてかっこいい首都
ウェリントンは福岡よりもずっと小さく、人口は約50万人です。長崎によく似ています。中心部は美しい港を囲むように広がっていて、街の端から端まで歩いても30分ほどです。ウェリントンは、カフェやパブ、レストラン、そして映画製作で有名です。
「ロード・オブ・ザ・リング」を知っている方はきっといらっしゃいますよね？ ほかにも「アバター」、「ホビット」、「キング・コング」、「タンタンの冒険」など……挙げればきりがありません。これらの映画は、ニュージーランドで最も成功している映画制作会社のWeta Workshop（ウェタ・ワークショップ）で、その多くがウェリントンで制作されました。
家族にとって大きな変化
私は妻と2人の子どもと一緒に、2025年8月に福岡へ引っ越してきました。子どもたちに日本人のひいおばあちゃんともっと親しくなってもらい、そして日本の文化や暮らしを経験してもらうためです。現在、子どもたちは日本の小学校に通っていて、日本語も毎日少しずつ上達しています。実は、今回が私にとって日本で暮らすのは2回目です。2009年から2012年の間は北海道に住み、高校で英語を教えていました。北海道と九州はとても違いますが、私はどちらも大好きです！
私は映画や本、美味しいものを食べること、そして、できるだけ体を動かすこと（でも、よく失敗しています！）に興味があります。妻と一緒に大濠公園の周りを走ったり、暑い日に海へ泳ぎに行ったり、雨の日に子どもたちを連れて映画を観に行ったりするのが好きです。
近いうちに、クラスで皆さんにお会いできるのを楽しみにしています！ニュージーランド訛りがあるので、少し違った英語に聞こえるかもしれません。オーストラリアの英語に少し似ていますが、こちらのほうがちょっと良いですよ。Yoroshiku Onegaishimasu!

Hello from New Zealand!
Kia ora koutou katoa!
Hello everyone, my name is Josh and I’m the newest member of the team at Kensington.
Land of the Long White Cloud
“Kia ora” is how we say “hello” in New Zealand. It’s from the Maori language – the indigenous language of Aotearoa New Zealand. “Aotearoa” means “Land of the Long White Cloud”. That should give you a hint about the weather in New Zealand. I grew up in Wellington, the capital city, and in my humble opinion, the best city in New Zealand by a country mile. Wellington is often cloudy and windy, but you can’t beat it on a good day.
A cool little capital
Wellington is a lot smaller than Fukuoka, with a population of about 500,000 people. It looks a lot like Nagasaki. The central city wraps around a beautiful harbour, with green hills rising up from the coast. The hills are sprinkled with houses, with lots of winding and steep streets. You can walk from one end of town to the other in about half an hour. Wellington is famous for its cafes, pubs, restaurants, and for making movies.
Maybe you have heard of “The Lord of the Rings”? Or “Avatar”, “The Hobbit”, “King Kong”, “The Adventures of Tin Tin” … the list goes on. All of these movies were largely made in Wellington at Weta Workshop – New Zealand’s most successful movie production company.
Big move for the family
I moved to Fukuoka with my wife and two children in August 2025. We came so that our kids could get to know their Japanese great-grandmother better, and so that they could experience culture and life in Japan. They currently go to a Japanese elementary school and their Japanese is improving everyday. This is actually the second time I’ve lived in Japan. Between 2009 and 2012, I lived in Hokkaido, and taught English at high school. Hokkaido and Kyushu are very different but I love them both!
I’m interested in films, books, eating delicious food, and trying my best (but often failing) to stay active. I love going for a run with my wife around Ohori park, going to the beach for a swim on a hot day, or taking the kids to catch a movie on a rainy day.
