【Henry

Sleep like a log –

I slept like a log after my long trip.

Hit the hay / hit the sack – 寝る

I’m really tired. I’m going to hit the hay.

Burn the midnight oil –

I burned the midnight oil to finish my report.

Catch some Z’s –

I’m tired. I’m going to catch some Z’s before the meeting.

Sleep: Do we really need it?

Hello everyone! How are you sleeping these days? This week, we’re talking about something we all do every day: sleep! In this blog, we’ll look at why sleep is important, how our modern lifestyles can affect our sleep, and some useful English expressions about sleeping.

Why is sleep so important?

Sleep is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. When we get enough sleep, we usually feel more rested, refreshed, and energetic the next day. Good sleep can also help us concentrate and work or study better.

But what happens when we don’t get enough sleep? We may feel tired, sleepy, or exhausted, and it can be difficult to concentrate at work, school and in other situations. Have you ever stayed awake all night before an important exam or a busy day? If so, you probably remember how tired you felt the following day.

People have different sleeping habits, too. Some people are early birds like me,  and like to get up early. Others are night owls and prefer staying up late. There is no perfect bedtime for everyone, but getting enough good-quality sleep is important.

Is Modern Life Making Us Sleep Less?

Today, many things can make it difficult to get a good night’s sleep. Smartphones, social media, work, and studying can all keep us awake at night. Have you ever said, “I’ll check my phone or tablet for five minutes,” and then realized that an hour has passed? It happens to many of us!

Our daily schedules can also affect our body clocks. For example, social jetlag happens when our body clock and our daily schedule don’t match. Staying up late on weekends and getting up early for work or school on Monday can make us feel tired.

So, what can we do? We should try to have a regular sleep schedule. We shouldn’t use our phones too much before bed, and we shouldn’t drink too much coffee in the evening. We have to give our bodies enough time to rest.

Useful Sleep Expressions/idioms related to sleep

Here are some fun English expressions you can use when talking about sleep!

Sleep like a log – sleep very deeply

I slept like a log after my long trip.

Hit the hay / hit the sack – go to bed

I’m really tired. I’m going to hit the hay.

Burn the midnight oil – stay awake and work or study late

I burned the midnight oil to finish my report.

Not sleep a wink – not sleep at all

I didn’t sleep a wink before my interview.

Catch some Z’s – get some sleep, usually for a short time

I’m tired. I’m going to catch some Z’s before the meeting.

What do I do to get restorative sleep?

One of my healthy habits is making sure I get about seven hours of sleep each night. To do that, I try to go to bed by 11:00 p.m. and avoid screens for at least thirty minutes beforehand. I also make sure not to drink caffeine, like coffee, after 3:00 p.m.

A short 15‑minute meditation helps me relax and calm both my body and mind before going to sleep. Like many people, I keep my bedroom dark and quiet so I can drift off more easily.

What about you? What helps you sleep well? Do you sleep like a log, or do you sometimes not sleep a wink?

In conclusion,

Sleep is not a waste of time—it is an important part of our daily lives. Getting enough sleep can help us feel more rested, focused, and ready for the day. Of course, everyone has different sleeping habits, so it’s important to find a routine that works for you.

So tonight, why not put your phone away a little earlier, relax, and get some good sleep? Sweet dreams, everyone—and see you in class!
