” hit it of / gel “

This week’s topic is Relationships  and we have a lot of expressions around describing relationships we have, so here are a few extra expressions to describe relationships that are just starting.

‘I went on a date last night and we hit it off.’
‘We have a new person in our department, we talked a bit but I don’t think we gelled.’

In the first example ‘hit it off’ means that I thought we connected in a positive way. In the second example it means the opposite; that we didn’t really connect in a meaningful way. 

Both examples are basically the same and can be changed to negative or positive forms (we didn’t hit it off, we really gelled).

‘I went on a date last night and we hit it off.’
昨晩デートに行ったんだ、僕たちはすごく意気投合したよ。

‘We have a new person in our department, we talked a bit but I don’t think we gelled.’
私達の部署に新人さんが入りました、少ししか話してないですが、良い関係を築ける気がしません。

ひとつめの例、 ‘hit it off’ は友好的な関係が築けていることを意味します。2つめの例では逆の意味で、あまり有意義な関係を築けていないことを意味します。
上記の例はどちらも、肯定文でも否定文にも変更できます。

Fish and Chips

When I tell students I’m from Scotland, they often ask me if I like Fish and Chips. Well, I do like fish and chips – but it depends where I get it from! There are many good places and just as many bad places. However, in the UK people don’t usually eat fish and chips at a restaurant – we usually get take out. The quality of fish can vary quite a lot. People usually eat the fish with tartar sauce, vinegar and/or a squeeze of lemon juice. For the chips, we can add tomato sauce or brown sauce – which is more fruity. Me, I prefer fish with tartar sauce and chips with brown sauce! It’s not so healthy but very tasty, especially late at night when I haven’t had time to cook dinner! If you ever go to the UK, I recommend trying fish and chips, but remember to have low expectations – it could be good or bad depending on the place!

フィッシュアンドチップス

私の出身国、スコットランドについて話していると、多くの生徒さんにフィッシュアンドチップスを好きかと聞かれます。まぁ、私はフィッシュアンドチップスが好きです、でも、どこで買うかによります!!
たくさんの場所で美味しいフィッシュアンドチップスを買うことができますし、同じくらい沢山の場所で、美味しくないものを売っています。
でも、UKの人々はあまりフィッシュアンドチップスをレストランで食べません、普通はテイクアウトするのです。

魚のクオリティはとても色々で、通常はタルタルソースとお酢、それに絞ったレモンをかけたりして食べます。ポテトにはトマトソースかブラウンソースを足せばもっとフルーティになりますよ。
私は魚にはタルタルソース、ポテトにはブラウンソースを付けるのが好きです。
あまり健康的ではないですが、特に夕食を作る時間が無かった日の遅い時間に食べると、これがすごく美味しいんです！

This week’s subject
Restaurants

This week we’re going to be talking about Restaurants in class. This subject is one of my favourites, and it’s also a really important one as we spend a lot of time going to restaurants! We’re going to learn how to talk about our favourite restaurants in Fukuoka, why we like them so much and give some recommendations to our teacher and classmates. We’re also going to practice talking about restaurants we’ve been to recently, what we ordered and who we went with. Lastly, we’ll try to talk about some restaurants we’d love to visit in the future – and remember they don’t need to be in Japan! For example, one day I’d like to have dinner at the top of the Empire State Building in New York City – the view is amazing!

レストランに関する英語

今週のレッスンでは、「レストラン」について話します。
これは私の大好きな題材の１つですし、長い時間をレストランで過ごす時には、本当に重要になるのです！

福岡のお気に入りのレストランについて、なぜそのレストランが大好きなのか、そしていくつかのオススメを講師やクラスメイトに話す方法を学びます。また、最近行ったレストランについて、誰と一緒に行って、何をオーダーしたかなどを話す練習を行い、最後に、今後ぜひ行ってみたいレストランについても話しましょう！

それは日本に限る必要はありません、例えば私は、いつかニューヨークのエンパイヤステイトビルの最上階にあるレストランでディナーをしたいです。きっと素晴らしい眺めでしょう！

The Nile River/ The River Nile

Hello there, how’re you spending your weekend?

There are many must-see or places that are worth a visit in Kyushu because of their natural beauty. I also happen to come from a country that is known for its natural beauty. One of the natural beauty features of my country Uganda is the Nile river. 6650 km long, it’s the longest river in the world. You can enjoy boating, fishing, swimming, kayaking, white water rafting and much more on the river Nile. The Nile is definitely one of the must-see wonders of Africa and the world.

Christmas and New Years

This week’s subject is Christmas and New Years. We’re going to be talking about all the things we love about the holiday season. First, we’re going to talk about the various traditions that are popular in both western and Japanese culture at this time of year. Also, we’re going to share our habits and routines – so remember to come to class prepared to talk about what you usually do over the holidays. Where do you usually go? What do you usually eat? Do you decorate your house? Do you usually exchange cards and gifts? 

We’re also going to talk about how we used to celebrate Christmas and New Year when we were younger, and our favourite experiences and presents. 

Western and Japanese holidays at this time of year are so different, so let’s have fun comparing them and learning about each other’s holiday traditions!
