Hello there everyone.

Today’s business English expression is “let go” which basically just is a nice way to tell someone that they are fired.
Example

“I’m sorry Tim but I’m afraid we are going to have to let you go next month. We are making cutbacks across the board and it’s last in first out I’m afraid.”

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Get writing!

Recently I’ve been giving all my private students extra writing to do on the subject of the week. Although we practice mostly speaking and grammar in class, writing is also a very important skill in language learning and I have found it to be a very useful way to review the class and think more deeply about the topic. 

Writing will also improve your speaking skills in the long run because you need to  think about sentence structure and grammar, plus you have time to add more complex ideas and vocabulary into what you want to say than you would when speaking to your teacher or partner in class. My advice would be to start slowly and build yourself up. For the lower level students I usually ask them to write about 50 to 80 words on a topic so it doesn’t get too tiring and we build up from there. For mid to higher level students I usually recommend about 150 to 200 words but the choice is yours. 

If you would like to try a bit of extra writing to add to your studies and aren’t sure where or how to start, please ask your teacher and we’ll be glad to help.

最近、私はすべてのプライベートレッスンの生徒さんに、その週のレッスンに関する追加のライティング課題を与えています。
私たちは主にスピーキングと文法をレッスン中に練習しますが、ライティングは言語学習において非常に重要なスキルです。
このライティング課題は、レッスンの復習や、レッスンテーマをより深く考えるのにとても役立つ方法であることがわかりました。

文章構成や文法について考える必要があるため、ライティングをすることで長期的にはスピーキングスキルも向上します。
さらに、ライティングをすると、スピーキングをするときよりも複雑なアイディアや語彙を書くことができます。
私からのアドバイスは、ライティングを始める時は短い文章から少しずつ始めて、徐々に自信をつけていくということです。
初級の生徒さんの場合、私は通常、トピックについて50〜80語程度書くように伝えます。
そうすれば疲れすぎず、そこから積み上げていくことができるからです。
中級から上級の生徒さんには、通常150〜200語程度をおすすめしますが、生徒さん次第です。

追加でライティングを試したいが、どこからどのように始めればよいかわからない場合は、どうぞ講師にお尋ねください。

ジェイミー先生の京都・奈良観光

Hello there everyone,

As you know I’m a simple man, beer and spicy food are enough to keep me happy so this blog is always a bit of a challenge to write. I did just take a very short trip to Osaka, Kyoto, and Nara though and I have to say it was very nice indeed.

I’ve been to Kyoto many times but this time I took a wander around Arashiyama. It was absolutely beautiful and may have been the first time in about two years or more that I tasted real fresh air. If you haven’t been there it’s definitely worth a look.
I also went to Nara for a quick trip.Todai temple was pretty impressive and the deer were pretty cute too but being from the northwest of Scotland and waking up to them in my garden sometimes I wasn’t quite as impressed by them as the young ladies travelling there seemed to be. I think I heard the word “kawaii” about 10 million times in one day!

I also caught up with the lovely Rina San, our former receptionist while I was in Osaka and we had a bit of a blether about the early days of Kensington. Hopefully she’ll pay us a visit when she comes back in summer.

All in all it was a nice little trip and what’s more I was there without kids so for the first time in about 12 years I got to do my own thing. Bliss!

私の出身地、私自身～講師の自己紹介

みなさん、こんにちは。

ご存知のように、私はビールとスパイシーな食べ物さえあれば幸せという、とてもシンプルな男なので、この「私の出身地、私自身～講師の自己紹介」という土曜日のテーマは、いつも少し書くのがむずかしく感じます。
しかしこの前行った、大阪・京都・奈良への小旅行はとても良いものだったので、今日はその小旅行について書きたいと思います。

京都には何度も行ったことがありますが、今回は嵐山を散策してみることにしました。
本当にきれいで、２年以上ぶりに本物の新鮮な空気を味わったかもしれません。
嵐山に行ったことがない方は、一度行ってみることをおすすめします。
奈良にも少し足を運びました。
東大寺はとても印象的で、鹿もとてもかわいいですが、スコットランドの北西で育ち、庭に鹿がいるのを見ていた私は、旅行にきていた若い女性たちほどは感動はなかったです。
「カワイイ」という言葉を一日に約１０００万回聞いたと思います！

また、大阪滞在中には以前ケンジントン英会話で働いてくれていたリナさんに会い、ケンジントン英会話の初期の頃についてたわいもない話をしました。
うまくいけば、彼女が夏に戻ってきた時には私たちを訪ねてくれるでしょう。

全体として、この小旅行は素敵なものでした。
さらに、約１２年ぶりに私は子供なしで自分のことをすることができ最高の気分です！

Hello there everyone!

Since we are talking about fast food this weekend in class, I’d like to introduce this phrase to you. At the drop of a hat means to do something quickly, without hesitation ,and quite often without thinking or self control.

Examples

“I don’t enjoy working with Don, he gets mad at the drop of a hat and is always screaming at the other staff.”

“I used to be very shy when I was a teenager. My face would go red at the drop of a hat.”

Hi there!

This weekend at Kensington Akasaka, Nishijin, Yakuin, and in our online classes the topic is fast food. 

This is a good class because it has a bit of both worlds, general discussion and practical roleplay.  We will be discussing different types of fast food, where, when, how often and what kind of fast food we like and then will move on to do a ropelay ordering food. We also have an opportunity to introduce some differences between British and American English. Sounds fun to me!

Card Handling

In Japan, handing over a business card is an art form – there are very specific ways to do it, and just grabbing cards without considering how you’re doing it can be extremely rude.

In Western countries however, it’s not as important, so it’s important to keep in mind that if a foreign investor takes your card in a manner that might be rude in Japan, it’s likely because they don’t understand the culture. Totally fine!

Don’t be surprised – especially with younger generations – to see people not even giving business cards anymore in some countries. Everything is going digital, so make sure you are up to date on online things and keeping in touch through there. The world is changing, fast!

Keyword Focusing

For many of my beginner students, I always strongly recommend focusing on keywords in a sentence, not prepositions or the grammatical structure.

The reason why is because in any form of communication, the essential points are what matter, not the precision in communication. If I give you “Me”, “eat”, “food”, “Wednesday”, you now have enough information to know that I will eat food on Wednesday.

Why should you focus on this? Because it allows you to understand each other easier, and focus on the important parts of communication. Over time, you will naturally start to use smaller details like prepositions and precise grammar.

This is how I self-taught Japanese – keywords, key kanji, context, and then filling the rest in over time. Trust me!

その理由は、どのような形のコミュニケーションであれ大事なことはコミュニケーションの正確さではなく、必要な事柄を述べることだからです。
私があなたに「私」「食べる」「食べ物」「水曜日」と伝えたら、あなたは私が水曜日に食べ物を食べることを知るのに十分な情報を持っています。

なぜキーワードに焦点をあてる必要があるか。
それはお互いを理解しやすくなりコミュニケーションの重要な部分に集中できるからです。
前置詞や正確な文法などの細かい部分は時間が経てば自然に使いはじます。

これが私の日本語の勉強方法です。
キーワード、主要な漢字、文脈、そして残りを時間をかけて埋めていきます。

Social Media Exile

Something I’ve been doing since the start of February is a social media exodus. An exodus means to “leave” something, basically.

In other words, since February 1st, I’ve blocked off all access from all social media sites – including YouTube. I can still get messages from my family on my phone and I use an app for my work, but otherwise, I haven’t been using any social media for over two weeks now.

I like to experiment, and so far, the results for my mental health and overall wellbeing have been very surprising. You can ask me about it in class if you want to know more, but I do recommend trying to cut things out like that and seeing what happens!

「exodus」とは、 基本的に何かから離れることを意味します。

言い換えると、２月１日以降、YouTubeを含むすべてのソーシャルメディアにアクセスすることをやめました。
家族からのメッセージはスマートフォンで受信し、仕事にはアプリを使っていますが、それ以外の場合は２週間以上ソーシャルメディアを使っていません。

私は実験するのが好きです。
そしてこれまでのところ、私のメンタルヘルスやウェルビーイングはとても驚くべきものとなりました。

副詞的に使う「kind of」 について

It’s “kind of” —

During my classes, I’ve had a few students ask me about what this “kind of” thing is that I say in my natural speech.

I tend to say it quite often. I’m not sure about other students, but I know a lot of people personally who also apply it in their everyday English speech. What does it mean?

It’s basically a kind of adverb in casual language. You can roughly translate it to “A little”, “somewhat”, “quite”. Adverbs are always rather broad in what they measure because it’s a feeling, but that’s pretty much what it describes when it’s used in language.

So the next time you hear me say “kind of”, just remember that it’s an adverb…kind of.

私が会話で使っている「kind of」について、レッスンで何人かの生徒さんに尋ねられました。

私は「kind of」をかなり頻繁に言う傾向があります。
他の生徒さんはどうか分かりませんが、日常英会話で「kind of 」を使っている人はたくさんいます。
「kind of」とはどういう意味でしょうか？

基本的にはカジュアルな言葉の中での副詞の一種です。
大まかに「少し」「やや」「まあまあ」などに翻訳できます。
副詞は感覚であるため表すものはかなり広範囲ですが、だいたいその文脈の中に出てきているものについて修飾しているだけです。
なので、次に私が「kind of」と言うのを聞いたときは、それが副詞であることを思い出してください。
