みなさん、こんにちは！ニッキーです。今回も「ニッキーの日記」が戻ってきました！
今日の投稿では、世界中の多くの国で祝われている祝日、バレンタインデーについてお話しします。バレンタインデーは、一年の中でも特にロマンチックな日だと考える人が多く、パートナーや、これまで一緒に築いてきた愛を祝う日とされています。一方で、チョコレートやカードの売り上げを伸ばすための企業の策略にすぎない、と冷めた見方をする人もいます。どんな考え方であれ、とても興味深いテーマだと思うので、掘り下げていくのが楽しみです！
国境を越えたバレンタインの祝い方
同じ「バレンタインデー」という名前でも、アメリカと日本ではその祝い方がまったく同じというわけではありません。アメリカのバレンタインデーでは、男性がチョコレートや花、カードを用意し、さらにディナーの予約までするのが一般的とされています。女性もパートナーにプレゼントを贈ることはありますが、負担は圧倒的に男性側にかかることが多いです。
一方、日本ではこの男女の役割が逆転し、バレンタインデーには女性が男性にチョコレートを贈ります。その大きな理由の一つとして、アメリカにはホワイトデーが存在しないことが挙げられるでしょう。アメリカではバレンタインデーしか祝われないため、女性が公式にパートナーへ奮発する日がないのです。男性のみなさん、ごめんなさい！
私自身の話をすると、子どもの頃はバレンタインデーのディナーを家族と過ごすことがほとんどでした。というのも、2月14日は兄の誕生日でもあるからです。これは兄にとってかなりラッキーなことだったと思います。なぜなら、彼はアメリカでは珍しく、この特別な日に奥さんからも同じくらいプレゼントをもらえる男性の一人だからです。
大人になってからは、バレンタインデーを特別視せず、普段通りの一日として過ごすことが多くなりました。そして夜にパートナーと少し良いレストランで食事をし、その後は家に戻ってプレゼントを交換し、映画を何本も観る――そんな穏やかな過ごし方が定番になっています。
今夜、何を観る？
チョコレートや花以外で、バレンタインデーに欠かせないマーケティング要素といえば、やはり映画でしょう。恋愛やバレンタインデーをテーマにした映画は、ハリウッドでは数え切れないほどあり、毎年のように新作が公開されています。私は普段、ラブストーリーやロマンチックな映画をそこまで好んで観るタイプではありませんが、それでもこれまでに心に残った作品はいくつかあります。
個人的には、ロマンスだけでなく、しっかりとしたコメディ要素があり、さらに少しの悲劇が織り交ぜられている作品が好みです。そのほうが物語に深みが出て、より引き込まれる気がします。
特に印象に残っているのが、『Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind』と『Roman Holiday』です。どちらもとてもに美しく、よく練られたストーリーを持ち、典型的な恋愛映画の枠を超えた作品だと思います。男女が一緒に冒険をする物語ではありますが、単なる恋の行方ではなく、人生の状況やその人の過去が、いかに恋愛を複雑にしてしまうかに焦点が当てられています。
本当の愛は、「この人を愛しているから一緒になれる」というほど単純なものではありません。時には人生が別の道を用意していて、物事が思い通りに進まなかったり、関係が曖昧で複雑になったりすることもあります。これらの作品にはファンタジー要素も含まれており、『エターナル・サンシャイン』ではSF的な仕掛けが使われ、『ローマの休日』ではヨーロッパの王女という非日常的な設定が物語を彩っています。
一方で、もっと気軽に楽しめて、英語の勉強にもなるシンプルなロマンティック・コメディを観たい気分なら、『50 First Dates』と『Forgetting Sarah Marshall』がおすすめです。どちらもとてもユーモアがある心温まる作品で、舞台はなんと両方ともハワイ。寒い2月に、ロマンスと美しいハワイの景色で少しでも暖かい気分になりたい方には、ぜひこの2本を観てほしいです。
私のいちばん「甘い」思い出
小学生の頃、もちろんみんな恋愛をするにはまだ早い年齢でしたが、それでもバレンタインデーは児童たちが楽しみにしている行事の一つでした。というのも、アメリカでは小学校の児童全員が、授業の一環としてクラスのパーティーでさまざまな祝日をお祝いするからです。ハロウィンや感謝祭、クリスマス、そしてバレンタインデーなどが、毎年何らかの形で教室で祝います。
私が通っていた小学校では、バレンタインデー当日、児童たちはそれぞれ自分でデコレーションした靴箱を学校に持ってきました。箱は自由に飾ってよくて、自分の個性が出るように工夫しつつ、バレンタインらしい要素を少し取り入れるのが定番でした。また、クラス全員に配れるだけの、個包装のお菓子を持ってくる必要もありました。
バレンタインデーのパーティーが始まると、児童たちは自分の靴箱を机の上に置き、教室を歩き回って、持ってきたお菓子をクラスメイト一人ひとりの靴箱に入れていきます。全員にお菓子を配り終えると、それぞれ席に戻り、友だちとおしゃべりをしたり、映画を観たりしながら、砂糖たっぷりの“宝物”を楽しむのです。
毎年、自分の靴箱を飾ることも、クラスメイトがどんなデザインにしたのかを見ることも、本当に楽しみでした。文字通り、そして気持ちの上でも、とても「甘い」伝統だったと思います。
恋のキューピッドの矢の結末
恋人がいるかどうかに関わらず、バレンタインデーは誰もが楽しめる祝日だと、私は思います。たとえばアメリカでは、友人同士でバレンタインカードやちょっとしたプレゼントを交換することも珍しくありません。周りの人に愛を伝えるのに、遅すぎるということはないのです。
たとえ小さなチョコレート一つでも、「あなたのことを思っている人がいる」と分かるだけで、その人の一日を驚くほど明るくしてくれることがあります。

Love Is in the Air!
Hello, everyone! It’s Nicky, back with another entry in ニッキーの日記！
In today’s post I will be discussing Valentine’s Day, a holiday celebrated in many countries all around the world. Many consider it to be one of the most romantic days of the year, where you can celebrate your partner and the love you have crafted together. Some more cynical people, however, see the holiday as a corporate ploy to increase sales for chocolates and cards. Whatever your perspective is, it’s an interesting topic that I’m excited to dive into!
Celebrating Across Borders
Though the holiday shares the same name, Valentine’s Day is not celebrated identically between America and Japan. On Valentine’s Day in America, men are expected to buy the chocolates and flowers and cards, as well as make all the dinner reservations. The woman may buy a gift for her partner as well, though the burden is much more so on his side. In Japan, however, these gender roles are reversed, with the woman giving chocolate on Valentine’s Day. A large reason for this, it seems, is the absence of White Day in America. Since we only celebrate Valentine’s Day, there is no official day where women are expected to splurge on her partner. Sorry, fellas!
As for me, growing up I actually had to spend most of my Valentine’s Day dinners with family, as February 14th happens to be my brother’s birthday. I’d say that’s pretty lucky for him, as he is one of the few men in America who can expect to get equally showered with gifts by his wife on this special day. Since becoming an adult, though, I typically spend Valentine’s Day as normal, just like any other day, and then go to a nice dinner with my partner followed by a gift-exchange and movie marathon back at the apartment.
What Should We Watch Tonight?
One major source of marketing beyond chocolates and flowers, of course, is movies! Movies centered around romance or Valentine’s Day are a dime a dozen in Hollywood, with new ones being released each year. Though I am not typically the biggest fan of love stories or romantic movies, there are a few that have stood out to me over the years. I tend to lean towards romance films that have a good deal of comedy as well as a touch of tragedy thrown into the mix. This makes the story more engaging for me, personally.
In particular, films like “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and “Roman Holiday” stand out in my memory. These are absolutely beautiful films with well thought-out stories that go beyond the typical mold of a love story. Though they center around a boy and girl going on an adventure together, these stories focus more on how life circumstances and a person’s history can disrupt a romance. Real love is not as simple as “I love this person so we can be together.” Sometimes life has other plans for you and things become muddled and complicated. These films also offer some fantastical elements, such as “Eternal Sunshine” featuring some science-fiction twists and “Roman Holiday” centering around a European princess.
If you’re in the mood for some English practice with a simple, straight-forward rom-com, though, I have always had a soft spot for “50 First Dates” and “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”, two very funny and sweet movies that both happen to take place in Hawaii. If you want some romance mixed with scenic Hawaiian views to keep you warm during this chilly month of February, I highly recommend those two!
My Sweetest Memory
In elementary school, despite the fact that obviously everyone is too young to date, Valentine’s Day was still an occasion that students looked forward to. This is because in America all elementary school students celebrate holidays with a class party! Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, etc. are all celebrated to some extent in the classroom each year.
At my elementary school on Valentine’s Day, all students came to school with a shoebox that they had customized themselves. You can decorate the box however you like and have it match your personality, typically with a touch of Valentine’s theming as well. You also need to bring some individually-wrapped candies to school, with enough to give at least one to each student in your class. During the Valentine’s Day party, students place their shoeboxes on their desk. They then walk around the room and distribute the candy they brought into everyone else’s shoebox. Once all the candy has been passed around, students return to their seats and get to enjoy their new sugar-coated treasures while chatting with friends or watching a movie.
Each year I always really looked forward to both decorating my own shoebox and seeing how my classmates decorated theirs as well. It’s a very sweet tradition, both literally and figuratively!
The Conclusion for Cupid’s Arrow
Whether you have a romantic partner or not, I still believe that Valentine’s Day is a holiday that can be enjoyed by all! In America, for example, it is not uncommon to exchange Valentine’s amongst friends as well. It is always the right time to show love to those around you! Even something as small as a piece of chocolate can make a person’s day infinitely brighter, just knowing that someone is thinking about them.
