【Nicky

「The meat is a little chewy.(お肉が少し噛み応えがあります)」= お肉にしっかり火が通っておらず、少し硬くて噛み切りにくいという意味です。

「How strong is the drink?(このお酒はどのくらい強いですか?)」= アルコール度数がどのくらいなのか、また、どのくらいアルコールの味を感じるのかを尋ねる表現です。

「Does the fish have bones in it?(この魚には骨がありますか?)」= 特に英語を母語とする人と一緒に食事をしていると、日本にあるさまざまな種類の魚に馴染みがないので、どうやって食べればいいのか分からず、この質問をすることがあります。

Cheers to Izakaya Culture!

Hello, everyone! It’s Nicky, back with another entry in ニッキーの日記!

In today’s post I will be discussing izakayas. These are a very fun aspect of Japanese culture that I greatly enjoy, as they are not so prevalent in America. I know they are quite popular among our students as well, so I hope you enjoy seeing a foreigner’s perspective on them in today’s blog!

My Go-To Izakaya

One of my absolute favorite izakayas to go to is ひねり蛇口ハイ大衆酒泉テルマエ in Daimyo. The interior has a really unique aesthetic design, looking more traditional / regular in one section, but towards the back resembling a sort of bathhouse / sauna atmosphere and design. The walls are lined with tile linoleum and there are shower head nozzles protruding out from the walls and dangling from the ceilings.

I also enjoy that the all-you-can-drink is so cheap. In addition to this, as the name of the izakaya implies, the drinks come from a tap, so any time you please you can go to the walls of drink tips and pour yourself a glass, customizing it how you please. My go to is the lemon sour! If you’re ever in Daimyo and thinking about a new fun and cheap place to try, I really recommend

Some Useful Izakaya English

Izakayas have a wide range of food and drinks, and there is a variety of useful English that you will often hear and be able to use. For example:

“The meat is a little chewy.” = It is not properly cooked and a bit tough to chew and eat.

“How strong is the drink?” = This is how high the alcohol percentage is, as well as how much you can taste the alcohol. Careful – sometimes the drink doesn’t taste like alcohol, but still has a high percentage of alcohol in it. This is also referred to as “strong” in English!

“Does the fish have bones in it?” = Particularly if you are dining with native English speakers, they may not be familiar with the wide variety of fish in Japan, and may have some questions about how to properly eat it.

Next time you go to an izakaya with a foreigner, listen for these common questions!

The best part?

Of course I love izakayas and have visited many in many different prefectures around Japan. I always enjoy the lovely atmosphere, as well as the delicious foods and plentiful drinks. They have really taught me to become a big fan of high balls, which I never really drank before moving to Japan.

However, my favorite facet of izakayas is how they bring together many different kinds of people from all walks of life under the same roof. In America, restaurants, bars, shopping centers, etc are often quite divided along economic lines. Very wealthy, middle class, and blue-collar workers do not usually socialize in similar neighborhoods or venues. I really love how, at an izakaya, rich businessmen, local shop owners, people from all walks of life, etc. can all come together and enjoy spending time with others. I really wish America had more social places like it!

Kanpai!

Spending time with friends at izakayas have been some of my most treasured memories since coming to Japan. Whether it’s meeting up there for a friend’s birthday, or simply unwinding after a long day of work, they are always a place I look forward to visiting.

Do you have any favorite izakayas I should try? Let me know during our next lesson!
