Try to think in English outside of class

Hello there everyone,

My study tip for today as you can see from the title is to try to think in English not only in the classroom but also when you are at home, shopping, on the bus, or basically doing anything at all. It is one way that I used to practice when I was learning Japanese. Firstly I would just remember the names of everyday objects around the house, then I would think about how many there are, where they are, and finally what we do with them all in Japanese and confirm it (much to her annoyance after a few months) with my wife. In this way you can learn nouns, the use of the verb be, singular forms, plural forms, and verbs and adjectives.That is a pretty good amount of study just in the house. From there the possibilities are pretty much endless.For example something simple like going to the supermarket can give you many opportunities to think in or about English. If you have someone in the house to practice with like I did then all the better but it is perfectly possible to do by yourself too.

みなさん、こんにちは。

タイトルからわかるように、今日の私の学習のヒントは、レッスン中だけでなく、家にいるとき、買い物をしているとき、バスに乗っているとき、または基本的に何をしているときでも、英語で考えるようにすることです。
これは私が日本語を勉強していたときに、よく練習した方法の一つです。
まず、家の周りにある日用品の名前を覚えました。
次に、それらがいくつあるか、どこにあるか、最後にそれらをどうするかをすべて日本語で考え、そして妻と一緒に確認しました（数か月後、彼女はとてもイライラしていましたが）
このようにして、名詞、be動詞の使い方、単数形、複数形、動詞、形容詞を学ぶことができます。
家の中だけでもかなりの量の勉強ができます。そこから可能性は無限に広がります。
たとえば、スーパーに行くなどの簡単なことでも、英語で考える機会がたくさんあります。
私のように一緒に練習できる人が家にいるなら、なおさらです。一人で練習してもまったく問題ありません。

Guising

As you all know this weekend is Halloween! I’m sure that a lot of you are familiar with some of the traditions connected with Halloween such as dressing up, carving jack o lanterns and especially trick or treating but have you ever heard of “guising”? 

Trick or treating is actually an American Halloween tradition and as such it has become the more widely recognised version of what happens on Halloween night due to the influence of American entertainment, but the UK, or Scotland at least, has a slightly different version which I just mentioned earlier called guising. 

The premise of guising is pretty much the same as trick or treating, kids dress up and visit houses in the neighbourhood and are rewarded with candy, fruit, and other kinds of snacks, but the main difference is that we have to actually go into the house and perform a “party piece”. Your party piece can be anything really but things like songs, jokes, riddles, and simple magic tricks are pretty popular. One time a couple of kids performed a ballroom dance in my living room which was pretty inventive I thought. In some houses you visit there may well be a Halloween party going on and you will be able to join that for a while and take part in some games that we like to play on Halloween night such as “dooking for apples” where you have to get as many apples as you can out of a basin only using your mouth!

I’m not sure if guising is still done in exactly the same way as this nowadays but I have some really fun memories of it when I was a child.

ご存知の通り10月31日はハロウィン！
みなさんはハロウィンに関連する伝統として仮装やジャック・オ・ランタン、特にトリック・オア・トリートなどはよくご存じかと思いますが、「guising」について聞いたことがありますか?

トリック・オア・トリートは実際にはアメリカのハロウィンの伝統です。
アメリカのエンターテイメントの影響によって、ハロウィンの夜に行うものとして広く認識されています。
ですが、イギリス、または少なくともスコットランドでは、少し違うやり方をします。それは、前述の「guising（ガイジング）」呼ばれます。

「guising」の前提は、トリック・オア・トリートとほとんど同じです。
子どもたちは仮装して近所の家を訪れ、キャンディー、フルーツ、その他のスナックをご褒美として受け取りますが、主な違いは、実際に家に入って何か披露しなければいけないことです。
披露するものはなんでも構いませんが、歌、ジョーク、なぞなぞ、簡単な手品などはかなり人気があります。
ある時、数人の子供が私のリビングルームで社交ダンスを披露しましたが、これはかなり独創的だと思いました。
訪れる家の中には、ハロウィンパーティーが行われている時もあり、そのパーティーにしばらく参加して、ハロウィンの夜によく行われるゲームに参加することもできます。
「dooking for apples」と呼ばれるゲームでは、あなたは洗面器に入ったりんごを口だけでたくさん取り出さなければなりません！

今でもこれとまったく同じような「guising」が行われているのかどうかはわかりませんが、「guising」は私の子どもの頃の本当に楽しい思い出です。

Luck

Hello there everyone!

The topic for our classes this weekend in Akasaka, Nishijin, Yakuin and our online classes is luck. We will be talking about whether we consider ourselves to be lucky or not and why, talking about lucky or unlucky experiences we have had in the past and discussing superstitions. Sounds like an action packed class to me.
